I figured my comments on the other thread merit their own thread. I just think that since a lot of Jews are turned off by hebrew school or day school, they decide to either go off the derech or if they were never frum, intermarry chas veshalom. I think that we need to start an organization that specifically targets college campuses without hillels or Chabad houses such as Colorado school of mines and other colleges like that. What do you think?

You mean and specifically only makes the boys frum, but tells the girls to jump off a cliff. Because that will solve the shidduch crisis.

    Is that what you mean?

shhh, popa, critical thinking is not allowed here.

    Colorado school of mines. wut.

If the “shidduch crisis” is our only aim, we can double the efficacy by simultaneously engaging in kiruv of men and richuk of women. (It’s also well known that women don’t really have mitzvos, so we can be merachek them pretty much with impunity.)

Aand you’d have to overcome the quiet prejudice* against BT shiduchim for FFB kids if you want it to have any effect on the crisis.

I think that if a ffb cant handle or is too close minded to date a bt then they are just hurting themselves. We r all the chosen Ppl. And btw some BTs have more of an appreciation for Torah and mitzbos then a lot of FFBs

I googled “Hillel” at the Web site for the Colorado School of Mines. I got some articles about moisture levels in desert soil, but no reference to a kiruv group.

Hillel has been in business since the early 1920’s, during which time assimilation of American Jews has accelerated, and so Hillel does not seem to be working.

Chabad has been on American college campuses since the early 1970’s, and although I have no figures on their success, I think that in 20 years, you will see that they have produced more baal teshuvim than any other kiruv effort. I do not know whether Chabad’s efforts will address the “shidduch crisis,” particularly since I am skeptical about the existence of the shidduch crisis.

I know some Jewish people who go to that school. Also I am not saying not to do kiruv on women at all, for women, they could have an event where you bake challah and learn about hafrashas challah, while learning about people such as Rebbitzin Kanievsky, and her challah recipe.

but if you do kiruv to the girls, it will just make the shidduch crisis even worse.

    I agree with VM

Vogue: The thing is, unless you specifically try to be mekarev the men, this idea won’t really solve the age gap (I think there is an age gap, but I highly doubt that it’s the sole or even major cause of the “crisis”). You’ll get more men, but also more women to further the imbalance.

Right I hear I was just pointing out ideas so that it would not look like I am sexist.

Sexist isn’t the issue, though- the issue is that unless you do focus your efforts on one segment of the population, the idea is ineffective specifically as an end to the age gap thing.

You can’t really win here, unfortunately. (Not that I think we should really be mekarev people for an agenda, but still.)

Ok Vogue, agreed; we don’t think you’re sexist. But all those sweet young ladies learning to do hafrashas challa will enter the shidduch market and we’ll be overrun with female BT’s.

No, your idea won’t work without the inestimable advice of the ineffable Veltz Meshuggener.

nfg, not trying to nitpick, but i suspect you”ll find this correction useful. The word Baal Teshuva refers to a person who has done Teshuva. The word “Baal” is the one referring to the person, so that’s the word to pluralize- Baalei Teshuva. Similarly, a person can (hopefully) be a Shomer Shabbos; many are Shomrei Shabbos.

golfer: Thank you for the correction. “Teshuvim” sounded wrong when I typed it, but now I know why.

We should go to china and solicit males to become geirim. They have a reverse shidduch crisis where estimates are that by the year 2020 there will be THIRTY MILLION more males of “mating age” (the term used in the CNN story of March 4, 2013)than females living in China.

Right, but we aren’t supposed to actively encourage people to convert that is against our religion and it is What missionaries do to us. In general most places that give conversion classes don’t accept anyone so easily because otherwise they might make people Jewish that go back to their old religion later on.

I don’t want to start a whole new debate but many potential gerim most likely decide to go through a conservative or reform conversion because it is much easier Than a frum conversion.

    Good points, both of you.

I think the middle road which makes the most sense therefore is that we should solicit frum women to convert to being Chinese.

I’m impressed Vogue; I see you’re really thinking this one through.

So, looks like we”ll have to ditch those round trip tickets to China (that’s capital C, Mr Apushatay).

Pity… I would’ve liked to see the look on AZ’s face when 30,000,000 guys showed up at NASI World Headquarters.

Like I said before, so far the best advice you got is from Veltz Meshuggener.
