Since this is a coffee room, let’s be honest about it. Keurig coffee (i.e. Green Mountain) is horrible. And their cups are ridiculously expensive (not even bringing up the machine). The only way anyone could possibly not see this is coming from a Starbucks addiction- Starbucks coffee is even more expensive, and acrid, so by comparison Keurig is the light at the end of the tunnel. So there’s that.

Let’s talk about the brew method. Drip brew? Nothing of the sort. More like garden hose brew. The water goes into that little cup with so much force that they can’t even use recyclable materials for the cups or it would explode. Not enough bars to make espresso, and too short a brew time for anything conventional. Like shidduch dating.

Yet anyone you talk to who has a Keurig will tell you that it’s the greatest, even though they can never explain why. So I’ll tell you why: so you feel like less of a sucker for having one. Kind of like Amway, except that you don’t make any money off your marks, so it’s just plain rishus. Like shidduchim.

    Jbaldy22,

Are there any non-kosher varieties of K-Cups, and if so, how do you deal with the kashrus issues of using a public machine?

“Keurig coffee is horrible…yet anyone you talk to who has a Keurig machine will tell you it’s the greatest, even though they can never explain why.”

It’s a matter of personal taste. I don’t have a Keurig machine, but I happen to like the taste of Keurig coffee and enjoy a cup whenever I am in an office or other setting that does have a machine. If anyone who likes something you don’t is a “troll”, I think the entire world qualifies.

Say it ain’t so, jf02. The last time you were with us you hadn’t ever drunk a cup of coffee (until we convinced you to take your first sip…)

    #1218424

Oh right, I forgot about that! I’ve since come to fall in love with coffee 🙂 I drink it with cream, no sugar. Coffee flavored anything is also great. I had some coffee ice cream earlier tonight. I am by no means addicted, but I do take advantage of the caffeine content occasionally when I need to drive late at night.

If a Keurig machine was previously used with a milichigs K-Cup coffee flavor, does that prevent it ever being used after a fleishig meal even with a pareve k-cup flavor?

No, but the bigger issue would be for someone who is makpid on keilim for cholov stam.

    #1218431

Wouldn’t it be a bigger issue that there isn’t a way to toivel it?

29, that depends who owns it. In fact, though, aside from the cost, I am not interested in having a Keurig machine because of the tevilah issue.

Why is it not a problem to drink after fleishigs but is a problem for people who are makpid on keilim for cholov stam?

They weren’t gozer blios on hamtanah, but l’chatchilah, kelim with blios of issur remain assur until kashered.

Because cholov stam is a davar sh’yesh lo matirim, so it isn’t battul.

    Lior,

I believe you can cook something pareve in a clean dairy utensil and then eat it right after a fleshig meal; however, you cannot cook something in a clean non-kosher utensil. People who hold that they cannot cook with chalav stam utensils (e.g., they are not kosher), therefore, would have a problem.

So, effectively, once a Keurig machine has been used with an OU-D K-Cup, anyone makpid on Cholov Yisroel cannot utilize that machine, including with pareve K-Cups, or allow their keilim to be used with the coffee produced from that machine, even if it’s pareve.

Only if they’re also makpid on keilim would it be a problem (at least with one pareve cycle in between).

or allow their keilim to be used with the coffee produced from that machine

No, that should be fine after 24 hours.

“Only if they’re also makpid on keilim would it be a problem”

What’s the logic of being makpid on eating Cholov Yisroel but not makpid that the keilim remain Cholov Yisroel?

Because having a Chumrah to only eat CY doesn’t make non-CY into Issur. But if you hold that non-CY is real Treif, it would affect the Keilim.

    DaasYochid and Lior,

Wouldn’t the difference be between people who follow Rav Moshe Feinstein’s ruling that chalav stam certified by USDA in the U.S. is kosher, but it’s still good to be makpid on chalav Yisroel (thus they eat chalav Yisroel, but aren’t so concerned about the keilim) vs. people who don’t hold by Rav Feinstein regarding chalav stam (thus they would be concerned about keilim since they consider chalav stam to be non-kosher)?

Dash and Avram, cholov aku”m assers keilim. If one is makpid on cholov Yisroel, this presumably means he is at least choshesh that cholov Yisroel needs actual r’iyah, as many of the gedolei haposkim held, even if mei’ikar hadin he goes with Rav Moshe..

According to this chashash, what we call “cholov stam”, or, “cholov hacompanies”, would in fact be cholov aku” m, so why wouldn’t he be makpid on keilim as well?

If one is makpid on cholov Yisroel,

Yet you (or at least I) wouldn’t say that someone is Makpid on Bishul Yisroel, in contrast I would say that someone is Makpid on Pas Yisroel.

Hashem is so good! I asked a question about Cholov Yisroel in a Cholov Stam kitchen. It hasn’t even posted yet.

Then I find the answer here.

Re the opening post: here’s why I like my Keurig:

    1. K-cup coffee at Costco is about $0.75 each, about half the cost of coffee at a bagel shop or other carry-out.

    2. Coffee taste is a matter of personal … taste. I have found a number of varieties that are excellent. I don’t know about the garden hose brewing, but what matters is what’s in the coffee cup and whether or not it is to your liking.

    3. Keurig is convenient. Much easier than brewing a whole pot.

So, opening poster, what makes me a sucker?

DY – I think that many people who are makpid on cholov yisrael do so as a chumra. It’s not just that they hold by Rav Moshe zatsal m’ikar hadin; their being machmir is also based on Rav Moshe zatsal, since R’ Moshe poskened that one should be machmir when chalav yisrael is available.

Since their being machmir is based on R’Moshe & R’Moshe held that chalav stam is kosher, it would seem that they shouldn’t have to worry about the keilim.

Additionally, when I had sheilah recently about eating in people’s homes who use unreliable hashgachos, I was told that if it’s aino ben yomo, it’s fine. So that logic should apply here as well.

I believe that Lubavitchers hold that chalav stam is completely assur (chalav akum), so it more of a problem for them. Although, perhaps the last point would still apply (if the keilim are in fact “aino ben yomo”)

this one doesnt use filters. its about the same tircha as making instant coffee.

but yes k cups, 15 times more expensive and 20 times less versatile, are more convenient.

golfer: If I wasn’t laughing at your “No yays” then I’d be crying.

Since I’ve never been told “No yays” and I know that you meant it, it’s amusing.

Awww. Well. It may have not been the official answer but it does shed light on how some people keep CY and yet will eat it in a kitchen that usually has CS. Meanwhile some are makpid on both a CY and CY kitchen.

And my OP on the other thread asked about how it works in reality in people’s homes and what they consume.

Still, good point. I should ask my LOR for clarification and the real “answer.” Todah rabbah for redirecting me 🙂
