My guess (guess, not fact) is that this issue is completely unrelated to kashrus, but rather a money issue. Why would they make an “as of” date rather than just call it not kosher now?!?!

well, maybe they said a month ago, pay up by the end of May, if not we pull the hechsher. I remember something similar happened with the Carvel on ocean ave and M, it was kosher for years and years, and then suddenly they also took off the hechsher. (actually the same agency) I must say your idea also makes sense.
