Does anyone have any problems with this filter, or hear about anything wrong with it? Is anyone using it for a long time and happy with it?
May 8, 2012 7:55 pm at 7:55 pm #872932bygirl93MemberI have it- and don’t like it- and it doesn’t work well unless you really know how and what to do- and it slows down your connection!

May 8, 2012 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #872937boysmomParticipantI have it and I do like it. I didn’t notice any slowing down of the computer. I don’t find the setup very difficult either. If it blocks something that I don’t want blocked it wasn’t difficult to change. I like that you can shut down the internet overnight or whatever hours you want. Best of all my teenagers haven’t yet figured out how to get around it.
May 8, 2012 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #872938episMember`any of those problems are worth it to ensure the purity of you computer
May 8, 2012 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #872939hockoftherockMembertheres no need for a filter you shouldnt have internet
May 8, 2012 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #872940MadisonJewMemberI have used K-9 for years. It is easy to install and use. It allows you to select which level of security you want, and to add websites to be allowed or prohibited. I do not see any noticeable delays. It crashes on occasion, but a simple reboot fixes it.
May 8, 2012 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #872941ThingsYeshivishKidsSayMemberI have been using it for a while now and have not experienced any major issues. My internet has not slowed down because of it. Definitely recommend it.
May 9, 2012 5:17 am at 5:17 am #872942RABBAIMParticipantIt is tremendous. ans if it causes a fractional delay to your requests, contemplate ho many issurim you avoided and by the time you have begun thinking your page will have loaded.
May 9, 2012 6:39 am at 6:39 am #872943YW Moderator-42ModeratorI recommend OpenDNS – a good, fast filter.
May 9, 2012 11:12 am at 11:12 am #872944Menachem MelamedParticipantThe only question should be which filter is best. It is hard to believe that anyone who values his neshama and that of his family would use the Internet without protections. I don’t think that people should let their children go to someone’s house if the family has unprotected Internet. Letting your children go to such a home is a good way to destroy them. I deal with hundreds of kids, and I am not exaggerating. If you have Internet – you must have protections in place.
May 9, 2012 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #872945squeakParticipantcontemplate ho many issurim you avoided and by the time you have begun thinking your page will have loaded.
Rabbaim- I have come to respect a lot of what you say, but your approach here is way off. It is statements like the ones you made that divided the klal from their rabbonim. It assumes that the internet user would have been oiver issurim in his or her regular internet use, which is not true. It is also absurd to think that the person will use the delay time to pontificate each and every time a server request is made (maybe once, maybe 10 times, but after that its just a nuisance).
May 9, 2012 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm #872946bygirl93Membermenachem melamed- thats exactly what we are trying to do- no one was saying not to have a filter-
May 9, 2012 1:18 pm at 1:18 pm #8729472qwertyParticipantK9 shouldn’t noticeably slow your connection and if it does maybe there is something wrong with your setup or maybe it interferes with your other programs like anti virus or firewall. Someone should research this further.
May 9, 2012 1:21 pm at 1:21 pm #872948erm_saywhatMemberFor all of its wonderful options ad settings, K-9 is stupidly simple to remove.
Case Study: A friend in a yeshiva where they compelled the students to have filters needed to access a YouTube video for college. (For those judging, it was an all-male Jewish college.) Took me a few minutes of Googling.
EDITED
I’d suggest a remote proxy filter if you must have one. K-9 is stupidly simple to remove.

You are assuming that they aren’t oiver every single click unless something bad comes up but every click is a sakana, the overall lifestyle of using a computer that way is a sakana for something bad to eventually happen. It is a ticking time bomb and therefore you are oiver by putting yourself at its eventual mercy.
Think of it like yichud, you can me meyacheid with somebody and not actually do any issur with her but you were still oiver on putting yourself into a makom sakana. The issur isn’t just the act itself, there is an additional issur of lo sikrivu. A yirei shamayim should realize this and therefore understand that even the “muttar” Internet use is an issur here.
“It is also absurd to think that the person will use the delay time to pontificate each and every time a server request is made (maybe once, maybe 10 times, but after that its just a nuisance).”
Of course they won’t think about this during every millisecond of every delay but the overall mindset should be that the extra tircha is well worth it. I try to think of it this way, every year the speed of computers and connections goes up, just a few years ago we were ecstatic to have even half the speed we have now, so just have patience and understand that it isn’t “that bad” to have to go through the extra bit of tircha. It might take some getting used to but eventually you get used to it and it becomes just part of the experience, a minor annoyance. Computers give us minor annoyances all the time, it freezes up for a few seconds, you frantically move the mouse around for 5 SECONDS while you go crazy thinking the world is about to end. We live in a fast paced world and people really need to take a step back and practice some savlanus.
(I have this same issue with drivers, people are in such a rush, changing lanes, honking horns, and what does it save them? Maybe if they’re lucky it will shave 30 seconds off a 10 minute drive. It’s really not that big of a deal in the long run. This mindset is what causes people to text and answer calls while driving. I was driving with someone the other day, we were less than 2 minutes from our destination and his cell phone rings. He made such a big deal of getting it out and answering as if the world would end if he missed the call and put us in sakana in the process. The proper thing to do would have been to just ignore the call and called the person back 2 minutes later. 2 minutes is not that long! It’s not the end of the world. Savlanut!)
May 9, 2012 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm #8729502scentsParticipantI was using K9, it slowed down our entire network!
I have asked other people, they said that they never had a problem, we experimented it, uninstalled it re-installed it a few times, K9 was making everything much slower.
However, OpenDNS is a great idea, they claim a lot of large companies use their service.
May 9, 2012 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #872951kollel_wifeParticipantIf the internet usage is for casual/recreational use, home use, then I don’t see why the k9 filter (some slowing down) should be a problem.
If it’s for work usage, consulting a qualified frum computer technician will help you choose the correct filter (at the router level is much safer).
Although there may be cost involved, keeping your computer running efficiently and keeping yourself protected is worth the cost.
May 9, 2012 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm #872952livelovelaughMemberIf you have k9, and you have an antivirus, which most computers do, you must make sure that k9filter.exe is in the list of exclusions from being monitored. That is usually where the slowing down of the system comes from.
May 9, 2012 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm #8729532qwertyParticipantLivelovelaugh, thank you that’s what I was trying to say and that’s the reason why some people see the slow down and others don’t.
erm_saywhat, most new k9 setups should include a proxy filter. So for most users that should be enough to make it difficult to get around it.
May 9, 2012 4:16 pm at 4:16 pm #872954squeakParticipantYou are assuming that they aren’t oiver every single click unless something bad comes up but every click is a sakana, the overall lifestyle of using a computer that way is a sakana for something bad to eventually happen. Yes, that is what I am assuming. Defining every click as an issur whether or not something bad comes up is exactly what I meant about alienating the klal. The ideal is to achieve safe issur free internet use, and the message needs to be tempered. How about if we make the message say that UNfiltered clicks are sakana chamura, and that once the necessary precautions are taken it is not assur to use the net normally.
I don’t like your comparison to yichud, because yichud itself is an issur derabbonon. Not so using the internet after taking precautions. At least, that is the mesage we need to send out, because making the internet assur has proven to be a severe problem.
To your second point, I have no disagreement. The delay is worthwhile because it is necessary. Slowing down to merge into traffic is not something we complain about either. Just don’t couch the message the way rabbaim did.

May 9, 2012 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #872956apushatayidParticipantI use K-9 in conjunction with Malwarebytes (paid version) and once I set up K-9 as an app that need not be actively monitored by MB, I see no system performance issues.
May 9, 2012 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #872957ZeesKiteParticipantI don’t have or want k-9, so long as I don’t have to because I don’t want anything “taking control” of my computer. Of course if I had to I would. Instead we have Jnet, all it’s filtering gets done in the base. Also, there is no temptation to undo, it is my connection. Iv’e been on it a long time and I’m happy with it. It gets slow (ok, really s l o w) sometimes, that’s the small price I pay for trying to keep clean.
May 9, 2012 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #872958chocandpatienceMemberI’d also recommend OpenDNS.

August 7, 2017 10:16 am at 10:16 am #1333477MOfrummy1ParticipantI just got it for a smartphone yesterday seems to work be working well so far, although it has a few weaknesses
August 7, 2017 10:52 am at 10:52 am #1333525etzharParticipantI have used it for some years now and it works extremely well and my office colleague has the password. I have also blocked it from accessing youtube which is one of the biggest Sakonois of the internet. The reason I say that is because most peolple dont browse bad sites intentionally but just looking for a chazonus clip on youtube can lead onto the worst clips. Having youtube blocked means I cant get the video clips on YWN etc but it is a small price to pay. I have asked YWN to try and sort this but it hasnt yet happened.
August 7, 2017 11:29 am at 11:29 am #1333566chaya13ParticipantWhat is better to go with for cheap android phones; gentech or netspark?
August 7, 2017 2:16 pm at 2:16 pm #1333681apushatayidParticipantI dont know what you consider “cheap android phone”. I have Netspark installed on an LG Stylo. works the way it is supposed to.
August 8, 2017 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #1334738AWoman_Outside_bklynGuestI’ve been using K9 for quite some time, and one of the biggest issues I have is that it’s very hard to really fine tune it within a category. For example, they lump “streaming video and MP3” (or something similar – I’m not at home right now to see) together. So it will block YouTube and Spotify, the latter of which I like and use. Also, I don’t think there’s a filter on earth that will filter YouTube itself. My son’s professor at Touro assigned them some videos to watch on YouTube. He had to stay late at the school to view them there, since it’s such a pain to open up the category on our computer.
Second gripe is that it seem like the program is totally unsupported and hasn’t been updated in eons. So I think I’ll try the OpenDNS several of you requested. BTW, I work in computers, so customizing settings doesn’t bother me.

August 8, 2017 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #1334787gavriel613Participant@RebYidd23 “K9 filters Youtube.”
AWoman_Outside_bklyn meant, it can’t filter out the bad videos and leave the OK ones. Certainly you can block the entire youtube category, its clear from her post that’s what she does.
August 8, 2017 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #1334785gavriel613ParticipantAs far as slowing down the internet is concerned, my experience is that it depends on how you use K9. It was designed (I imagine) with the idea that a few categories would be blocked, and say 90% open. So when you try to access any given website, it only needs to check that website against 10% of their blacklist. This is fairly quick.
However if you try to use k9 to block almost anything then it goes very slowly, as it has to check almost every category.
When I went to TAG to ask that they install k9 for me, I specifically asked them not to block categories like smoking. That category is for smoking addicts, there is no reason whatsoever why your standard frum Jew would want to block this. There are quite a lot of categories like this. I respect TAGs mentality of Ossur unless proven Mutar/necessary, but this is what slows down TAG in my experience.
August 8, 2017 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #1334775yaff80ParticipantMain issue is its ability or lack thereof to block sites/categories through in-app browsing.
TAG have reduced using this program. There must be a reason why.
Perhaps it may be worth a discussion with your local TAG office to find out the pros & cons of this program and what they can recommend for your personal needs.August 8, 2017 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #1334797gavriel613ParticipantWith regard to how easy it is to circumvent k9, I got TAG to install it and didn’t do it myself for 2 reasons:
1) So I also wouldn’t know the password
2) They install several extra things which I understand are designed to make it harder to uninstall k9. (Word of warning: I had to access regedit and similar things a few weeks later and wasn’t able to, I suspect this was because of these things they installed. If you don’t know what regedit is then that won’t be a problem for you. AWoman_Outside_bklyn says she works in computers, so just letting you know)August 8, 2017 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #1334813K10GuestK9 hasn’t worked on Android in years.
There are other filtered browsers, and filters which work on Chrome, but the best filters are Gentech and Netspark.August 8, 2017 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #1334816JosephParticipantWhich free filters for Android are available?
August 8, 2017 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm #1334821Shopping613 🌠ParticipantI’ve said this before here. I broke through k9 as a kid and so did many of my friends. If you have kids, GET SEOMTHING ELSE.
That said, as an adult who won’t spend 15-40 minutes breaking it, it’s really good and nice. You can get certain sites whitelisted.
BTW youtube itself has a “kid friendly” filter. Do a google on it.
August 8, 2017 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #1334838👑RebYidd23ParticipantOne of the options of K9 is a YouTube filter. It is supposed to filter out the bad videos. I don’t know how effective it is, but it is supposed to filter (not block) YouTube.
August 8, 2017 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #1334857MimiGuestK-9 doesn’t work well with Windows 10. I recently switched to Qustodio – also free – and it works much better, without slowing me down.
August 9, 2017 8:36 am at 8:36 am #1335009HaLeiViParticipantI find their pop-ups, or toast notifications, very annoying. You can’t move it to a different location or get rid of it any faster than it decides to stick around. At times there are multiple notifications and I can’t access those items on the tray our even seer the time.
I wrote to them but, as TAG has pointed out, they don’t care about this free try-out product and haven’t updated it in years.
I used to use openDNS but for some reason Optimum does not allow a custom dns. And worse, they deny it.
August 9, 2017 9:14 am at 9:14 am #1335021JosephParticipantHaLeiVi: How did you use OpenDNS until you stopped?
I’ve used custom DNS with them.
August 9, 2017 9:27 am at 9:27 am #1335024HaLeiViParticipantI’ve used it on other networks but I don’t recall using it successfully on Optimum Wi-Fi. I even tried switching back and forth between my phone’s hotspot and Optimum. Through my phone it worked but not on Optimum.
August 9, 2017 9:57 am at 9:57 am #1335043JosephParticipantYou mean the public Optimum WiFi on the streets? Custom DNS works over an Optimum personal/business internet connection.
August 9, 2017 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #1335381chabadgalParticipant(unrelated to k9) the actual youtube filter isnt that good. even the ‘youtube kids’ app doesnt always have videos appropriate for kids… completely innapropriate stuff, not only bad for jewihs people, have been found there. so yeah
(k9) its pretty good but it blocks every ‘unrated site’ so all blogs and things like that will be blocked (not major ones, but family ones or the like)August 9, 2017 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #1335380☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲Participantone of the biggest issues I have [with K9] is that it’s very hard to really fine tune it within a category. You can add an exception to allow (or not allow) a specific site regardless of category.

I’m sure she didn’t figure out how to do that herself, but rather found instructions online. You can block
the computer/hacking categories, and go through Google and blacklist any unblocked sites you find. -
