Not sure how you’re going to go about your mission asking every Jews mechilla. Of HaShem too.

No, this is not something one says about any group of Yidden, certainly not of the entire nation. Obviously HaShem thinks differently. He choose us. Specifically. We’re an ?? ???? ????.

No, one mustn’t make such jokes. It’s offensive to any member of the Jewish faith.

    #1015764

I wasn’t joking and I’m not apologizing and your reaction is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. Thank you.

Because had he said Jews are the best and brilliant, he wouldnt have gotten anywhere near the reaction he did.

This is a great jumpstart for a discussion. Jews are crazy…and so are the bicycle riders!(I really hope SOMEONE gets this reference!)

MODS Could you at the very least change this very offensive thread title. HaShem doesn’t like it, the very least bit. I guarantee you.

Frogster: It’s so comforting to know that whenever I’m in doubt about what G-d might or might not be offended by, all I need to do is consult with you, since you apparently have a direct pipeline to The Man Upstairs. So am I correct in assuming that He has no problem with one of His ?? ???? ???? being called a “Little Froggie?”

    #1015778

You don’t have to consult me, you just have to open the closest chumash (that’s the bible). And there’s no Man upstairs, He’s a Being beyond any mortal’s comprehension. And I do happen to have a direct connection to Him, I talk DIRECTLY to him at least thrice daily. And He has no problem with my screen name, if anything’s the problem it’s the time I’m wasting <GOTTA GO>

    OOT – well said.

    #1015781

If there’s no “Man Upstairs,” why do we call Him “Him?” If “ein Lo d’mus haguf” and there’s no gender involved, why don’t we call G-d “It?”

    #1015782

Y&P, using grammatical gender terms is not the same as calling Him a man, unless you mean, as I had originally assumed, that “the Man upstairs” is a euphemism.

    #1015783

Now, that is a valid question. And Rabbi Miller addresses it. In short he says that reference to masculine in general exhibits a sense of master, authoritativeness, strength. and etc.

    #1015784

That’s a good question. I heard that even though G-d has no gender, we say Him because the term represents G-d’s giving. Like a husband who gives to his wife, Hashem gives to us.

    #1015785

    The shechinah is feminine, though.

    #1015786

Please don’t get me started on Rabbi Miller, because the moderator will never allow my comments to be posted.

You are 100% correct on that one

I actually do have to consult you, because when I look in the Chumash, it doesn’t say anything about me not calling Jews crazy, and when I aks (that’s Urban for “ask”) Him directly, (I talk to Him at least thrice a day too you see; sometimes even frice or more!) He doesn’t respond. So please, put in a good word for me and tell Him I love Him and everything, but I’d like to know how much of the nonsense that goes on in this crazy (yes, completely crazy, insane, over-the-top loony-tune) community has anything to do with what he originally had in mind for his ostensible “Am Segula” and get back to me, will ya? And while you’re at it aks Him something else: if LittleFroggie is okay, How about LittlePiggie? Did you know that in many Chabad households treif animals (stuffed lions, elephants, Alligators on the kids’ PJs, etc) are all verboten? Was that His idea, too?

PS I hope you realize I’m just yanking your chain a little, brother…try and relax a bit, okay?

Please don’t take any offense from all the very serious posters and leave us.

We need you here to lighten things up when they get too serious & somber.

    #1015791

    Golfer,

Thank you for your support, and I mean that. IMHO, THAT is one of the big problems with some (and only some)Flatbush Jews; they’re so concerned about “letzonis” that they’re afraid to laugh, especially at themselves.

    #1015792

You are 100% correct on that one

    Um…is that from Moderator Man?

    or lady

    #1015793

There’s nothing wrong with lightening things up, it’s when one goes overboard and crosses a line, that’s wrong. No, I’m not so sure folks here would categorize me as a serious poster, no, nothing could be further than the truth. It’s just that certain things are a no-no. Putting such a headline is one. Attacking Jews as a group is not really something to be taken lightly. There can be lots of humor, fun besides pointing out and poking fun at certain segments of our holy nation.

    #1015794

Froggerama…here’s a bulletin for you: a nice portion of our Holy Nation (speaking of which, can someone here give me a definition of the word “Holy”…in any context?) are WHACKED OUT OF THEIR HEAD LUNATICS. Doesn’t make them bad people; just makes ’em crazy. But I love ’em, anyway.

If you want to see Hashem’s opinion on the matter, read Parshas Balaq. What happened to Yeshaya Hanavi when he told the Man Upstairs Besoch Am Temei Sefasayim? Take Yoshke’s advice: Tovasam Derosh; Ra’asam Al Tidrosh.

Y&P (why do I suddenly feel the need to go grocery shopping???), Hashem is referred to in masculine terms, because it makes it easier for us to conceptualize “Avinu Shebashamayim” when we bring it to our own humanistic terminology. When we want to think of Hashem as being Meracheim, we often use loshon nekeiva.

In any case, I think people DO sometimes take things a little too seriously, but that is part of the problem of READING and not hearing others’ words and seeing their facial expressions as they speak.

Personally, I do not take offense at mostly everything I read here, because I believe people need to be able to express themselves without fear of retribution, Divine or otherwise (unless they say something REALLY awful, and the MODS usually catch those things before they get posted, anyway). I don’t think what you posted was a terrible thing to say, I get the context in which you said it, and it applies to many of us (myself included, at times).

I also believe that there are many things that we Jews do, because they have become acceptable minhagim, but nonetheless were most likely not Hashem’s intention (not claiming to know Hashem’s intentions, folks). One example of that is the idea that it is mamesh awful to wear clothing that has some color to it. There is no Mitzvas Asei that I know of, wherein Hashem said, “Thou shalt only wear black and white!” I think back to the FJJ letter to the Shadchan in which a mother of a girl refused to allow her daughter to go out with a nice boy because he was wearing colorful sox when he showed up for the date.

Feeling that this was just plain stupid, is not being a self-hating Jew, or angry, or ANYTHING like Michael Savage, who apparently has a great deal of animus inside him, and (from the few times I have listened to him whiole driving)doesn’t allow many frum people to express themselves, but interrupts them in the middle of their attempt to make a point that is not in concert with his own point of view. Part of that problem, IMO, is that the frum Jews who DO call in, are not necessarily particularly articulate and they don’t make their point quickly and/or well.

I think people worldwide are crazy. We all have our shticklach, and personally, I find it makes life more interesting. The only time I find the word “crazy” to be offensive, is when someone is nebbich actually mentally ill, and people make fun of him or her. Otherwise, yes, we are all a little bit nuts.

    #1015806

HaLeivi (me too, by the way):

If you want to see Hashem’s opinion on the matter, read Parshas Balaq. What happened to Yeshaya Hanavi when he told the Men Upstairs Besoch Am Temei Sefasayim? Take Yoshke’s advice: Tovasam Derosh; Ra’asam Al Tidrosh.

With all due respect, I do not want to see Hashem’s opinion on the matter. You are a perfect example of part of what i’m talking about; If someone says or does something in Flatbush that is even a mah shehu out of the mainstream or controversial or gutsy or even just plain silly (like the original post of this thread was), invariably it will ruffle someone’s feathers in our crazy…yes crazy…community. Perhaps part of it’s a reflection of what’s going on in the rest of the country, with the liberal press and the Thought Police destroying folks they disagree with, but a lot of the attitude trickles down from some of the more extreme right wing rabbonim who, though their hearts may be in the right place (personally mine is right near my left kidney) give some (not all) people the impression that they must toe the line to qualify as a “Good Jew.” That works for some people, but can be quite annoying to others. Unfortunately, it can sometimes also turn people off to Yiddishkeit entirely.

NOW STOP TAKING ME SO SERIOUSLY AND RELAX!!!

Oomis, I completely agree with everything you wrote, except for one small point.

A mother who won’t let her daughter go out with a guy wearing colorful socks is definitely not crazy.

She is undeniably certifiably clinically insane, and in need of intensive counseling and medication.

    #1015809

Oomis, I think HaShem is always referred to in the masculine. Even when invoking and beseeching His mercy, we say ???? ?? ?? ????. And I heard the reason to it, it’s not for now.

You wrote that people have to be able to express themselves without fear of retribution, Divine or otherwise. And I think, in my humble opinion, that it’s a grave mistake. Every word spoken (and written as communication) down here gets analysed, scrutinized, weighted and judged. Every single word! It’s certainly not a laughing matter. In peyutim on Yemei Hadin we make mention of this dire concern, we do especial teshuva for improper words, actually there are many ‘Al Chaits’ for sins of improper speech. Dovid Hamelech, in his Tehillim constantly writes about people whose mouth run too fast, speak evil, etc. ??? ????? ????.. Full of it. So are Sefer Mishlei and Koheles. Full of admonition against talking (and writing) without proper thought, attention.

So of course, to brighten up (or make) someone’s day, give a lift, a chuckle, smile, of course, that’s a mitzvah. A great mitzvah. As Gemarah (somewhere) says about two jesters, they’re destined to a portion in Olam Haba. But that’s all about clean, refined, edele speech and language. Not street stuff, nor offending anyone, or anyone’s sensibilities. That’s a direct hit to an aveiva in last week’s parsha, ??? ????. Nor leitzunus, as defined in seforim. To make light of Hashem, his mitzvohs (mitzvah observance), or Gedolim.

I forgot who and what, but there’s a famous story of somebody who either “was there and came back” or in a dream to a friend, and reported that he (she?) can only say that about speech, they’re especially exacting, strict. So no, by Jews speech should definitely not be a free for all. (btw, do you know how much I delete at the last moment before pressing <SEND>?)

About your other assumption about “minhagim”. I don’t know every Minhag. But as a general rule, if it’s something that’s done there’s probably a reason.Probably a good reason. Someone who wants to outsmart, undo, dis-attach should prudently make a thoroughly investigate the complete issue at hand, the origins, history, all pertaining information, before making “””ammends”””.

And even if there’s no reason at all (colored socks, perhaps), maybe, just maybe the mother in question didn’t want her precious daughter going out with an odd-ball. He did stand out, right?
