y are they such a no go 4 yeshiva boys!?
February 20, 2012 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #856751NechomahParticipantJean material was created and used for clothes worn by manual laborers. Since we are affected by what we wear on the outside, it is not appropriate for a yeshiva boy to be wearing such clothes.
February 20, 2012 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #856752OneOfManyParticipantWhite jeans? Why would anyone wear such a thing?
February 20, 2012 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm #856753more_2MemberThere are many threads on this go check em out!!!

February 20, 2012 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #856755Think firstMemberThis again? Same reason they are a no go for someone in the military, they have a uniform that identifies them as a yeshiva bachur and it happends to be black and white for some and gray and blue for some. Jeans happends not to be the uniform.
February 21, 2012 12:05 am at 12:05 am #856756blackhatwannabeParticipantThey are more of a casual pants-people wear them to garden and paint and not they way to portray themselves in public and before Hakoadosh baruch Hu.
February 21, 2012 12:45 am at 12:45 am #856757dash™ParticipantSame reason they are a no go for someone in the military
Just because someone is enlisted in the military doesn’t mean they have to always be in uniform.
February 21, 2012 2:12 am at 2:12 am #856758agittayidParticipantHow about black chino pants for yeshiva boys?
Are they appropriate?
February 21, 2012 2:25 am at 2:25 am #856759For_realParticipantHuge aveirah. I think it was invented by the Catholic Church to make Yidden sin.
February 21, 2012 2:48 am at 2:48 am #856760Avi KParticipantJeans are the true beged Ivri as they were invented by a Jewish peddler named Levi Strauss for miners who need strong pants. Later they were adopted by farmers and later became popular among the general population.
February 21, 2012 7:26 am at 7:26 am #856761ToiParticipantAvi you continually post the single most ridiculous argument ive ever seen on this site. If a jew had invernted speedos and the nazi military uniform, would that make them beged ivri? besides we’re not talking about “beged ivri” (I dont even know what youre referring to) rather what a yeshivamann should wear that designates him as a full time worker for Hashem. so what in tarnation do you mean?
February 21, 2012 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #856762mytakeMemberWe’re not seriously gonna do a jeans thread again, are we?
February 21, 2012 2:51 pm at 2:51 pm #856763esther 1995Memberk so i was asking about jeans the “yes? no? black? white?” part is just a way of phrasing the question! not part of the question as in i was not asking about white or back jeans i was asking about jeans……..! and sorry if there has already been threads about it !
February 21, 2012 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #856764BTGuyParticipantClothing affects attitude. Clothing like jeans, cargo pants, tank tops,s muscle shirt are definitely not in line with supporting a learning attitude.
If the bochur is raking leaves or helping to put in a fence or going horseback riding, I guess they are not so bad.
Another problem is the slippery slope. Then what would be wrong with boots? A leather jacket?
February 21, 2012 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #856765ED IT ORParticipantI’m not getting it, just coz a bochur is in yeshiva they can’t wear comfortable clothing?
and I have seen many yeshiva bochurim with jeans.
is the next thread gonna be on rimless cappel’s (yarmulkas to the Americans)?
February 21, 2012 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #856766apushatayidParticipant“They are more of a casual pants-people wear them to garden and paint and not they way to portray themselves in public and before Hakoadosh baruch Hu.”
Well, since one is tending his garden in front of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, it would follow that for garden work, it is appropriate to wear jeans. I suppose you might argue it is inappropriate to do garden work.
February 21, 2012 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #856767Avram in MDParticipantI’m not getting it, just coz a bochur is in yeshiva they can’t wear comfortable clothing?
I don’t find jeans to be comfortable. The material is stiff and thick. If you want comfortable, try sweat pants. Not sure that the reaction at work to my sweat pants would be a good one, though. So maybe we should blame the high unemployment rate in this country on the lack of tolerance for comfortable clothing in the office:-)
February 21, 2012 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #856768nfgo3MemberWhen a bachur fixes the sink, he should wear jeans.
February 21, 2012 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #856769ED IT ORParticipantnfgo3, LOL bochurim are meant to be learning not fixing the sink!
ps what does nfgo stand for?
February 21, 2012 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #856770Feif UnParticipantBTGuy: You’re right. Nobody should wear boots. Especially when it’s snowing. God forbid your feet should stay dry! And leather jackets? Oh no! Wearing a leather jacket is one step closer to being in a motorcycle gang! Never mind that they’re warm, can last a very long time, and are very comfortable.
February 21, 2012 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #856771OneOfManyParticipantWait, what’s wrong with boots?
February 21, 2012 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #856773esther 1995Memberi think…. just like you would not go to the office in jeans similar situation with most learning boys
February 21, 2012 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #856774Avram in MDParticipantFeif Un,
Would you wear your pajamas to work? They’re quite comfortable…
February 21, 2012 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #856775AinOhdMilvadoParticipantOneOfMany… (and BTGuy)
What’s wrong with boots?
Nothing (inherently).
I have a picture of my tzadik great-grandfather (with long beard and payos) with my great-grandmother, in their town in Poland in (approximately) 1900, and he is wearing leather boots that go almost to his knees.
February 21, 2012 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #856776twistedParticipantWhen there is a techeiles thread, there soon follows a jeans thread. It must have something to do with the constellations.
February 21, 2012 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #856777OneOfManyParticipantNothing (inherently).
What does THAT mean?
February 21, 2012 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #856778bptParticipantits a good question, just with one spelling mistake:
G-E-N-E-S, not jeans. And its not just black / white; its height, eye color, hair texture, sports ability, ect.
February 21, 2012 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #856779MCPMemberI’m wearing jeans as I type this. Then again, I have a job (to which I am wearing jeans) so that makes me lower class, allowing me to wear jeans.
I have heard it brought down, peh mipeh from Moshe Rabbeinu himself, that wearing jeans is worse than doing petty crimes like stealing from the government.
February 21, 2012 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #856781blinkyParticipant“G-E-N-E-S, not jeans. And its not just black / white; its height, eye color, hair texture, sports ability, ect.”
and just to add on- yup some yeshiva bochurim are very into genes when it comes to shidduchim- the girls hair and eye color, height and weight…lol
February 21, 2012 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #856782ItcheSrulikMembertwisted: That’s because kaleh ha’ilan (where we get the blue for blue jeans) is fake techeles. The techeles thread is for halachic discussion and the jeans thread is for letzonus. (Or it should be that way. Some people seem not to know the rules 😉 )
February 21, 2012 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #856783bptParticipant” some yeshiva bochurim are very into genes “
And won’t it be hilarious when they tell the shadchan they are looking for someone with good genes.. and she arrives after shevah brachos with a wardrobe full of denim!
(I know I’d find that funny!)
February 22, 2012 4:13 am at 4:13 am #856784blackhatwannabeParticipantthe way a person dresses reflects upon the person sometime. A casual wardrobe gives a person a casual attitude on life and yiddushkeit, especially in yiddushkeit.
February 22, 2012 4:38 am at 4:38 am #856785Josh31Participant“uniform”
While it is needed for a disciplined military to operate, generally those in the more intellectual pursuits avoid uniforms.
Are we turning Yeshivos into Military Academies?
I know there is the concept of “Milchamta” of Torah, but uniforms were not what they had in mind.
February 22, 2012 8:53 am at 8:53 am #856786ToiParticipantJosh- Its a mussar theory. It doesnt mean we’re gonna give roshei yeshivos stars on their shoulders. Its a way to show who we work for full time.

February 22, 2012 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm #856788Loyal JewParticipantI don’t understand how this discussion is allowed after the gedolim paskened against jeans in all colors and for all purposes. Is the next discussion going to be about what TV shows we should be watching?
February 22, 2012 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #856789BTGuyParticipantHi Feif Un and One of Many.
lol (I assume you were being tongue-in-cheek).
What kind of bochurim are you talking about?
Nothing wrong with boots if they are Florsheims or what not.
But in the wardrobe family of jeans and leather jackets, the kind of boots like Doc Martins or motorcycle style boots with pointed toe and block heels, well, there is something wrong with them for a bochur.
If they dress like they are going to a local bar or a rock concert, they will act accordingly.
Also, while leather jackets are comfortable and practical and stylish, I dont see anyone showing up to yeshiva in either a leather or suede jacket. It classes with the black hat, which is much better attire for a yeshiva boy.
For me, clothing affects attitude and conduct. I find the more I accustom myself to yeshiva garb, and move away from looking cool on the “street”, the better I conduct myself.
February 22, 2012 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #856790Sam2ParticipantBTGuy: Don’t fall into the fallacy of assuming that anything that affected/works for you will work the same way for everyone else.
February 22, 2012 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #856792dal94Memberwhy is esther 1995 asking about jeans and yeshiva bochurim?you should be focusing on your studies not boys if you would like to get into a decent sem.

I know.. its a controversial topic but not for a girl… it seems you are in high school still. obviously not a true by girl….

February 22, 2012 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #856795apushatayidParticipant“Some jeans are tight fitted, with holes in the knees, is this kovod haTorah?”
No more or less kavod hatorah that a black felt hat bent out of shape, a white shirt that testifies to this mornings breakfast or a pair of black pants that would benefit from a visit to the washing machine.
February 22, 2012 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #856796apushatayidParticipant“after the gedolim paskened”
Is this psak be found in “seforim hakedoshim”? Can you cite a source for this psak?
February 22, 2012 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #856797BTGuyParticipantHi Sam2.
You are correct in that notion.
Although idea of “proper attire” is not truly unique from person to person. Nor is the feeling one has wearing a muscle shirt and cut offs versus a tuxedo so different from person to person.
There is a reason bochurim are not permitted to go to yeshiva with their shirt hanging out, jeans, motorcycle boots, leather jacket, and possibly certain style sunglasses.
It does make a difference and have an effect.
Yeshiva boys are not like regular boys. They are on the level, to say the least, of royalty.
If they knock around in “street” clothes, I say it will have an effect on them. You say it won’t. Understood.

February 22, 2012 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm #856802far eastParticipantregardless of what anyone may say it is possible to wear jeans and be a frum jew, In fact its very common. Certain communities like to make everyone wear the same style clothing but sometimes people get too caught up in “dressing like a ben torah”. Being in yeshiva and wearing black and white does not make a person a true ben torah. Serving hashem the correct way does regardless of whether you wear jeans or dress pants. It doesnt reflect the inside of a person
