If an Italian mayor of a small Italian seaside town has his way, law enforcement officials, and not fashion gurus, will be the ones to decide.
The conservative mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, Luigi Bobbio, says he wants to restore public decorum through a set of norms that include banning football games in public parks, blasphemy, and “very skimpy clothes.”
The rules are expected to be approved by the city council on Monday.
But what “very skimpy” means is a matter of contention.
The Italian press has interpreted the norms as meaning a ban on miniskirts, low-cut shirts and high heels.

October 25, 2010 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #703612apushatayidParticipantA former employer of mine interpreted “skimpy” (regarding length of skirt/dress) as any dress that does not hit at least 1 inch above the knee. I still remember one of the managers with a tape measure and then the announcement “christine, your dress doesnt meet the dress code, please go home and change”.

Italy is primarily to blame for most of the styles you see in the street today as most of the clothing comes from and is made in Italy.
Its nice to know that the concept of decency and modesty isn’t totally lost.

Actually, that’s goy, singular not plural. He still has to convince the city council.
As for your suggestion, if by “we” you mean anyone reading this website in the United States, you have this small problem standing in your way. It’s called the Constitution.

apushatayid: Halevay all employers too such a courageous stand.

October 26, 2010 3:27 am at 3:27 am #703617mddMemberHomeowner, what are you for? The Torah or the constitution? Ribono shel Olam or Ba’al?
October 26, 2010 11:31 am at 11:31 am #703618SJSinNYCMembermdd, you think religious law should be implemented in America? I’ll let the Muslim contingent that wants Sharia law here know that you support them.
October 26, 2010 12:37 pm at 12:37 pm #703619apushatayidParticipantLet’s be realistic. What the mayor will define as a “non mini” skirt likely falls far short of torah standards.
For the record, my former employer and their 1″ rule” had little to do with tsnius and everything to do with appropriate business attire. On “dress down fridays” I doubt if the skirts passed the 1″ rule from the opposite direction.
I wonder what the catholic schools will with their uniforms if the mayor gets his way.

October 26, 2010 2:02 pm at 2:02 pm #703621mddMemberSJSinNYC, do not go so far. If a non-Jewish leader wants to strenghten tsnius, it is a good thing. Frum people should not be screaming “the constitution!!” — this the shita of the New York Slums, and not of the Torah.
October 26, 2010 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #703622mddMemberSJSinNYC, maybe you are for the toeiva marriage? Because if it is forbidden, then it is too much religious coersion.
October 26, 2010 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm #703623aries2756ParticipantRome, in general has a more conservative outlook, but as a visitor I was told the closer you get to Vatican City the stricter the dress code becomes. Other cities in Italy do not have the same perspective.
October 26, 2010 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #703624HomeownerMemberMdd, please stop with the personal attacks. I don’t make the law, I just explain it. You live in a country whose legal system is based on the Constitution of the United States. Supporting a law that will unquestionably be ruled unconstitutional is a foolish exercise, not that it would be passed anyway.
October 26, 2010 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #703625BlessedRockParticipantThis is something we should highlight!
i recently was in one of the “major Jewish communities” and the problem with “mini” skirts on our frum girls and women is shocking!!
