’twas when it turned a dark blue/black/purple hue that I realised I had no choice – I had to polish my silver candlesticks.
For those balabustas whose silver never gets past the slightly tarnished stage, silver tarnishes as follows: gold -> brown -> dark brown -> deep blue/black.
April 4, 2011 2:21 pm at 2:21 pm #756498oomisParticipantTo easily get rid of really stubborn deep down tarnish, use
Tarn-X (or however it is spelled) followed by a polishing with whatever polish you typically use. By the time you polish it, it will be easy to quickly shine it up. Someone else once suggested to em to put aluminum foil on the bottom of the bath tub (shiny side up), put tarnished items flat down on it, fill the tub a little bit with Spic and Span and hot water, then cover the silver items with more aluminum foil, shiny side down this time). Apparently this causes the trnish to transfer to the foil. I never tried it, but have heard from others that it works.

I’m sure your wife feels the same way.
April 4, 2011 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #756501SJSinNYCMemberMy silver gets that way too LOL.

Yup, she does.
Why?
April 4, 2011 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #756504chocandpatienceMemberI have heard of the aluminium tip, but have never tried it. It sounded too easy, so I assumed there was a down-side to it.
Can it be used on all items – does it spoil the finish?
April 4, 2011 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #756505phillybubbyParticipantMy silver used to be like that and then every once in a while when it was real bad I would take out the polish and rub away until it sparkled. It took a lot of time and elbow grease. In the past couple of years I don’t use polish at all and my silver is always sparkling. I use silversmiths’ gloves. Every motzei Shabbos, before I put away the leichter, I put on my gloves and wipe them down and voila beautiful, sparkling leichter in just a few minutes. Then I put them away in the china closet until the next Friday (and they still look good). Hagerty and Goddard’s makes these gloves and although they are not too cheap they’re worth every penny!
April 4, 2011 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm #756506always hereParticipantI’ve used the silver polishing gloves & cloths, but am very curious about that aluminum foil method. does it havta be ‘Spic ‘n Span’ or will other liquid cleaners work, i.e. ‘Mr. Clean’??
April 5, 2011 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #756507adorableParticipantI just cleaned some silver last night that was not polished in a while (prob since last pesach) and while it was very very dark brown/gold it was NOT purple. I kept saying maybe I should leave it until next year and not polish it to see if it really turns purple….. but I could not hold out!
April 5, 2011 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm #756508JOLLY RANCHERMemberi know someone who never polishes thier leichters… and i watched the pattern over time it went like this silver> gold> blueish blackish. and then it got so black that it turned silver again lol…heyy if you never polish your silver youll at least see it being silver around once a year with out even polishing it lol!
April 5, 2011 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #756509hanibParticipantoh! so i guess i’m not too bad – mine all just turn gold, before i finally polish them. 🙂
April 5, 2011 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #756510chocandpatienceMemberIt probably depends how exposed your silver is. I leave my candlesticks out and they turn purple. The other pieces of silver are in a cabinet, though not hermetically sealed, and aren’t quite as bad.
In winter they tarnish quicker, due to the heating.
April 5, 2011 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #756511adorableParticipantwhy are you admitting that you are dysfunctional? just joking
April 6, 2011 9:13 am at 9:13 am #756512chocandpatienceMemberIt’s not me, it’s my silver that the problem – it can’t keep its colour. 🙂
Seriously, though, I don’t consider it a good thing if my silver was always shining and everything squeaky clean and neat. With young children around, it would mean they were losing out.
April 6, 2011 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #756513hanibParticipantgood answer, chocandpatience. 🙂
April 6, 2011 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #756514chocandpatienceMemberthanks b-y
April 6, 2011 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #756515oomisParticipantI suppose ANY detergent in the tub would work as well. It is the aluminum foil that really does all the work. I also think there is no down side, but try it on something inexpensive first.
April 6, 2011 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #756516Shticky GuyParticipantWhen I saw the thread title ‘It turned dark purple’, I thought it would have been about my shirt. You see, a poster yesterday was sure that I wear purple shirts, for some reason unknown to me. But my shirts are NOT purple. They get changed daily and washed!
‘It turned dark purple’ could have been refering to my teacher’s face when he realised I’d pulled a shtick yet again.
It could also have been my dear mother’s face on opening the cookie jar and discovering each one had been sampled, saying ‘I wish I hadnt told him not to eat a SINGLE one!’
But no, it’s yet another womens’ thread about cleaning! My face is beginning to change colors. Polishing silver? My motto is “in Goddard we trust”. Let them see to it.

Looking to get rid of it?
April 7, 2011 12:10 am at 12:10 am #756518always hereParticipantthanks, oomis. good idea to try it on something else first before the leichter. =]
