Has anyone heard about a letter signed by the Gedoli Yisrael soon after the foundation of the State of Israel that asserted that the state itself is the beginning of the redemption? If so, is this letter authentic?
July 30, 2013 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm #968763HaKatanParticipantI believe I heard there was such a forgery.
Both Chazon Ish and Brisker Rav, who were there, stated that the State was a bad “gzeira”. Others held similarly.
July 30, 2013 11:43 pm at 11:43 pm #968764Sam2ParticipantThe letter is authentic. As was the letter about saying Hallel on Yom Ha’atzma’ut in 1949. It was signed by people like R’ Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, R’ Elyashiv, R’ Kahaneman, and others. I think I once saw a reproduction of it on the internet but I don’t remember where.
July 30, 2013 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #968765Sam2ParticipantNow, that is not to say that it was unanimous. The Brisker and Satmar Rovs most famously, along with many others, were opposed to the state before, during, and after its inception. But there were many who felt that the state was a good thing when it first happened.

July 31, 2013 12:55 am at 12:55 am #968767ChachamParticipantI think the seforim blog once was maarich that it is forged.
July 31, 2013 12:58 am at 12:58 am #968768mddMemberThere was a letter, but not everybody held like that. The fanatical anti-Zionists (HaKatan, the multi-headed dragon of Josef etc.) will attempt to claim there was none. Don’t believe them!
July 31, 2013 1:02 am at 1:02 am #968769mddMemberOP, you see what you did? Joe is going out of his keilim.
July 31, 2013 1:20 am at 1:20 am #968770ChachamParticipantThe post on the Seforim Blog is called “Kalir, False Accusations, and More
by Marc B. Shapiro” in middle of number 2 he mentions the letter.
July 31, 2013 3:54 am at 3:54 am #968771benignumanParticipantThere really was a letter, but the key language -that the state is “reishis tzemichas geulosainu”- is believed to have been added after many of the Gedolim had already signed.
July 31, 2013 3:56 am at 3:56 am #968772Sam2ParticipantChacham: I’m shocked that you read the Seforim Blog (though there is a lot of great stuff on there; Menachem Butler is an absolute genius). But that is a good thing to see. Interesting. I’ve seen the letter so many places and never heard anyone say it wasn’t legit. It was about the elections and not Hallel though. I did forget that part.
July 31, 2013 4:11 am at 4:11 am #968773dovranMemberWhether it is to say Hallel or it is to vote in Elections is a humongous difference.
The fact they felt a need to forge what the letter said and edit it, speaks volumes to their realization that they lacked support in their position.
July 31, 2013 4:23 am at 4:23 am #968774popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe whole state is a forgery. It doesn’t really exist.
Let me ask you this: If a jewish state existed, do you really think there would be only one knesset?
August 1, 2013 12:21 am at 12:21 am #968775HaKatanParticipantmdd, as I wrote, I believe there was a letter, but there were a number of “irregularities” that invalidate it.
