March 20, 2018 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #1495428amesParticipantHi Joseph! Did you miss me?
I can’t say that I missed you, I’m a serial lurker 🙂March 20, 2018 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #1495442GadolhadorahParticipantAnytthing is better than a slab of starch flavored wih salt and onions. I’m not certain as to the nutritional value but if you are short on carbs and sodium, definitely go for it. Otherwise, tofu is the way to go.i
March 21, 2018 12:51 am at 12:51 am #1495469JosephParticipantOMG, ames, how could you even ask? Of course! I’m glad you’re keeping up… I wish I could do the same.

March 21, 2018 12:19 pm at 12:19 pm #1495669DaMosheParticipant“Better” is relative. It all depends on what you’re in the mood for.
With people arguing over who makes the best kugel, I have to throw my hat in the ring. I make an overnight kugel which is delicious. I’ve had many people tell me it was the best kugel they’ve ever had.
March 21, 2018 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1495768ToiParticipantMy brother will openly say in front of his wife that my wife’s kugel is the best he’s ever had. It is so super scrumptious, I put down full pans at a time. And she agrees with him, so she doesn’t even get insulted. Trust me, potatoes and onion dream of the day they get their tikkun by being in my wife’s kugel.
March 21, 2018 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #1495737JosephParticipantWe need to have a CR blind taste test among members pitting the potato kugels of Rabbi Shain, Mentsch1 and DaMoshe against each other.
Ames, do you want to throw your hat in the ring?

Around 15 years ago. A cousin in his first year in EY hung up signs all around har nof advertising a ” contest” to see who makes the best cheesecake for shavuos. They promised some minimal prize. He and his friends got close to twenty free cheesecakes that yom tov.
But I’m game
Several years back the wife came home from a shiur telling me that she heard that Rav Pam used to make the potato kugel for shabbos . I took the hint and started experimenting.
I happen to not like potato kugel but I took it as a challenge. I tried every conceivable combination and every idea given to me by frum patients. I even tried multiple types of potatoes and multiple percentages in mixing (I settled on 50/50 red and brown potatoes)
So I’m ready for this challenge!!March 22, 2018 12:10 am at 12:10 am #1495985LightbriteParticipantHomemade chunky charoset too!
March 22, 2018 12:10 am at 12:10 am #1495982LightbriteParticipantWhy yes there is!
Homemade Excellent…

DrizziliciousOkay I cannot go on because talking about food reminds me of how yummy some food is…
March 22, 2018 12:21 am at 12:21 am #1496012amesParticipantI’m embarrassed to say I’ve never made potato kugel, but I’ve tested kugel from every takeout place in Brooklyn, I feel experienced and objective enough to judge.
March 22, 2018 10:01 am at 10:01 am #1496036from Long IslandParticipantEstie Wolbe’s potato kugel. Best ever, better than mine and I make a killer kugel !!
March 22, 2018 10:26 am at 10:26 am #1496102iacisrmmaParticipantmentsch1: The story behind Rav Pam making the potato kugel for shabbos was in response to a question from a talmid who helped his wife cook for shabbos. Another talmid said that he was overstepping into his wife’s role so he asked Rav Pam if his friend was correct. Rav Pam answered it’s possible; I can only tell you that all the years my wife worked in the public school system and came home late on Friday, I made the potato kugel for shabbos.

March 29, 2018 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm #1501825oyyoyyoyParticipantI had a potato kugel miracle last night. I was on a walk with a friend and we both agreed we had a craving for some potato kugel. When i got home for supper, (after 9:30,) there was a twice reheated piece of kugel leftovers being served. Mamash Hashgacha pratis!!!
March 29, 2018 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm #1501830👑RebYidd23ParticipantBy the way, people, the comment of mine that you see about tofu is my mildest tofu comment.
March 30, 2018 12:11 am at 12:11 am #1501844JosephParticipantThat’s too mild, RY23.
March 30, 2018 1:41 am at 1:41 am #1501888👑RebYidd23ParticipantApparently comments that are too harsh about tofu get deleted.
May 22, 2018 11:37 am at 11:37 am #1523546👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt’s sad that some people are not only pro tofu, but against kugel and cholent.
May 22, 2018 11:40 am at 11:40 am #1523549YW Moderator-25ModeratorStill trying to find these harsh anti-tofu comments which were deleted. Don’t see anything here either.
May 22, 2018 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #1523797👑RebYidd23ParticipantI don’t want to argue with you over a deleted post, but from my end, it looked like the post was deleted, leading me to sincerely believe that it had been. Perhaps I was mistaken.
May 22, 2018 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm #1523799YW Moderator-25ModeratorI just searched every deleted post since Ma’aseh B’resishis and I only found three with the word “tofu” in them (one of them was actually “toful”).
None of them was authored by RebYidd23.

I am not a fan of Tofu,. but I know people who are and frankly it astonishes me that there are people who think some minced cheap fish dish that is served in cut up roll is better than Sushi

Cheesecake.May 23, 2018 12:32 am at 12:32 am #1524077GadolhadorahParticipantThere are obviously many CR posters who passionately hold that eating anything their bubbah and zeidah didn’t eat in the Alte Heim is like eating chazerfleish and that heatlty foods like tofu, sushi, fresh green salads (with high protein bugs) and fresh salmon (with those cute little worms) are ASSUR along with drinking any wine that couldn’t also be used for intravenous injections for diabetics suffering a glucose deficiency. The more fat, starch, sodium etc. the better and the bigger chelek of olam haboh one earns from eating the stuff.
May 23, 2018 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1524822🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantfresh salmon (with those cute little worms) are ASSUR
Feel free to count me in among those who consider eating “cute little worms” assur.
May 23, 2018 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1524885👑RebYidd23ParticipantSo bugs are kosher now, Gadol?
May 23, 2018 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #1525038zahavasdadParticipantkashruth is a real things and must be obeyed, Insects are never kosher.
That being said there is no reason if something is deemed to be kosher, but not something eaten in the Alte Heim that is should be avoided.
I can pretty much state for a fact there was no Pizza or Ice Cream in the Alter Heim
May 23, 2018 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm #1525173MenoParticipantThere are obviously many CR posters who passionately hold that eating anything their bubbah and zeidah didn’t eat in the Alte Heim is like eating chazerfleish
GH, can you please show me one post which indicates anything like this?
if something is deemed to be kosher, but not something eaten in the Alte Heim that is should be avoided
ZD, same question to you.
If I didn’t know better, I would think you both were deliberately trying to bash frum Jews.
May 23, 2018 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm #1525213GadolhadorahParticipantIf you search, you will find numerous postings about the supposed virtues of eating the same salty, fatty and starchy foods that were a staple in the Alte Heim only because that kind of junk food was all that poishete yidden of that time could afford. There is no yichus in perpetuating that sort of junk food nor is there any virtue in eating only veggies. The point here is that too many yiddeshe mosdos promote the wrong types of food and wine for “traditions’ sake” and only grudgingly offer more healthy and tasteful alternatives. Because someone can bring down from chazal that there might be some special “hidur Shabbos” associated with eating a small piece of meat (based more on the time when meat was a luxury that was unaffordable weekdays) there is no reason that a Shabbos meal cannot be fish, veggie or even dairy if prepared with a focus on special healthy dishes.
May 23, 2018 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1525227MenoParticipantIf you search, you will find numerous postings….
I’ve searched, and have found no such postings.
Here’s this thread in a nutshell:
CR Posters: “Kugel is good”
Gadolhadorah: “Why eat kugel when tofu is so much healthier and just as good?”
CR Posters: “Because tofu is gross”
Gadolhadorah (and zahavasdad, to an extent): “The fact your grandparents didn’t eat a certain food doesn’t make it treif”
Did I miss anything?
May 23, 2018 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #1525233zahavasdadParticipantI have actually seen signs on peoples houses saying this is a smartphone (Or Internet) and Sushi free household
Exactly how Sushi is related to Smartphones is beyond me
May 23, 2018 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #1525239zahavasdadParticipantEating or not eating something Kosher by any standards just because it was not eaten in The alter Heim is not Frumkite
I know plemty of very frum jews who prefer the better wines (if they can afford it, ot try to get it for shabbos) than Kedem Concord Grape wine
May 23, 2018 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #1525248MenoParticipantEating or not eating something Kosher by any standards just because it was not eaten in The alter Heim is not Frumkite
