Ein kemach ein Torah, but its not easy! And what happens when you”re stuck in a job that you really don’t like, but the way the economy is anyone who has a parnasa should be incredibly thankful that they do. Does anyone have any advice on how to at least tolerate a job they don’t like, perhaps even grow to love it? How many people are miserable at work?
June 21, 2012 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #880738artchillParticipantAsk for more work with increased responsibility EVEN if you don’t get compensated more. It’s a resume enhancer for when either the economy improves and other companies start hiring OR when your company is on more solid footing and will pay you fairly.
My friend don’t forget, Adam was CURSED that he has to work! Work isn’t supposed to be enjoyable!
June 21, 2012 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #880739TheGoqParticipantWhy are you miserable? the boss? coworkers? boring work?
June 21, 2012 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #880740interjectionParticipantAsk your kids what they do to stay positive in school.
They’re also stuck in a situation that is not their choice and they also must learn to make the best of it.
June 21, 2012 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #880741tzaddiqMemberi am presently doing something i have always loathed. stuck in a desk job! i do the accounts payables and many other miscellaneous stuff around, but i am more of the raa raa type, and would never dream that this would be my destined occupation. but i can not conmplain too loud, because the pay is well and i can provide for my family. i must admit i do fantasize the idea of winning a jackpot lottery, but otherwise i try to focus on my job and do the best i can, and no matter what, enter my home in a great mood for my family’s sake.
June 21, 2012 3:12 pm at 3:12 pm #880742ZeesKiteParticipantMe. I HATE WORK! ANY WORK!
That’s why I hang out here all waking (and sleeping) hours.
I’m totally against the concept of working. Dynamically opposed to the whole idea. I mean, was the world created just that I should spend my days on figuring out how to convey a complex solution to a computer? I’ve had it. If they claim they built “the” computer, one with enough giggle bytes (terror bites) and mega hurts to be able to think on its own, why in the world must I program it?!?
June 21, 2012 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #880743SaysMeMembersomeone i know has this theory that if you become good at your job, even if you hate the field, you’ll end up liking it, because you’ll feel successful and accomplished. so they say to trying to be great at what you do and then what you do will be great. (not sure if i agree, but can’t say i’ve tried that path either…)

June 22, 2012 1:49 am at 1:49 am #880745pcozMemberit is a mitzvah to hate work, Reb Tzadok says that it is reasonable to daven that you should be able to just learn
June 22, 2012 2:50 pm at 2:50 pm #880746oot for lifeParticipantThanks guys I really needed the chizuk. How does everyone make sure that their dissatisfaction at work doesn’t carry over to their home life?
June 22, 2012 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm #880747BTGuyParticipantHi oot.
It is definitely a test. But not nearly the tests Avraham Avinu went through, if that contrast helps.
It is possible to find a new job, and maybe look while are you still working.
It is also possible to find some meaning or challenge in the negative things about your job.
All in all, if someone dislikes their job a great deal, they will not be happy in it and that can, chas veshalom, affect their entire being.
Look for a new job and daven for help in finding one.
Hatzlacha and may you find the right job you are designated for and feel happy, productive in it, and compensated handsomely.
June 22, 2012 4:16 pm at 4:16 pm #880748YW Moderator-42ModeratorWhat do you mean by happy? Happy that you have a job? Sure, why not. Happy with your life? Perhaps that’s harder, but if you don’t define your life by your job it is possible. In US people often ask “what do you do?” As if your job defines you. There are many accountants out there who are very different from each other, some learn a lot, some do a lot of chesed, etc. So if you define your life and how happy you are with it by what you do outside your job, it is easier to live a happy life despite a job that you might think is not ideal for you.
Here’s another question, Is possible to be unhappy in a job you love?
You might love accounting, but if you feel unfulfilled in your life you will be unhappy.
June 22, 2012 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #880749YW Moderator-42ModeratorI heard a story, I forgot who it was about, that someone asked, “What do you do”, and he answered “Baba Basra”. His life at the time was Baba Basra, everything else was secondary. We should all be zoche to have this mindset.
June 22, 2012 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #880750YW Moderator-42ModeratorSaysMe, I heard the same thing in regards to yeshiva guys going to college. Even if the guy feels he doesn’t need it (his parents are forcing him or he is forced to take an elective in a subject he doesn’t think he needs) he should still work hard to do well in the class and not settle for a passing grade because then at least he will feel accomplished. But, if he just does the minimal work to pass just to be yotzei he will be unhappy the whole semester and feel that he is wasting his time.
June 22, 2012 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #880751BTGuyParticipantTesting.
The majority of my posts today have a light gold banner going down the left column. Does that mean they are not taking root?
June 22, 2012 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #880752YW Moderator-42Moderator(Obviously this has to be balanced with his learning but even if it means taking a little more time off learning it could be helpful. This is a discussion for each individual to have with their own Rebbi)
June 22, 2012 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #880753BTGuyParticipantHey 42. You have a bone to pick with me? 99 percent of my thought out, sincere posts are not taking, yet you are posting all over the place. Seriously…what is going on?
June 24, 2012 4:59 am at 4:59 am #880754YW Moderator-42ModeratorSorry, I wasn’t actually modding the other day. I was just reading through random threads and responding without approving the waiting posts.
The gold banner on the side means the post is awaiting moderation.
June 24, 2012 9:14 am at 9:14 am #880755babygooseParticipantmy grandfather made aliyah many years ago from canada. he didn’t speak the language, and was embarassed that he did nothing with his day. one day he met a friend, who asked him what he does. my grandpa answerd him:
“listen, i’m a kohen, and here in Israel they duchan every day. I have to untie my shoes, and retie my shoes, it keeps me very busy. i don’t have much time to do anything else”
June 25, 2012 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm #880756oot for lifeParticipantHappy means that I don’t dread going in everyday. I am happy when I can sit and learn, or when I can play with my children. I’m not looking to be excited about work, I think very few are, I just don’t want to feel as if I picked the wrong path in life.
I can’t really look to change jobs, I put a lot of money and a lot of schooling into this profession, to do anything else would be to start over from scratch. Even a different field with in the profession would mean starting over, at least monetarily, if I could even get hired.
Baruch Hashem, I am very happy in my life. I just fear that the weekly grind of work may be starting to take its toll on the other, more important aspects of life.
June 25, 2012 2:26 pm at 2:26 pm #880757BTGuyParticipantHi 42.
Thank you for the info. It seems they went through but not in the typical time. Sorry about that.
