I mean, to hear that awesome Brooklyn accent you must go to Upper West Side where there are still some old-timers who speak like Jackie Mason. Frum jews in Brooklyn speak either with a foreign accent (first generation immigrants) or a TV accent aka standard american (the younger ones).

I don’t live in Brooklyn, but I hear plenty of Brooklyn accents around anyway.

There are plenty of Jews who still have the Brooklyn accent. Go and hang out in the Rova or Ben Yehuda during the chagim and/or summer and listen to the tourists.

Living languages evolve constantly, and in a place such as New York with massive worldwide connections, they evolve quickly. If you want to hear someone talking like people did a century ago, either use a time machine or watch old movies.

Not necessarily. Britain, a (relatively) tiny country densely populated has dozens of distinctive dialects and accents. London which can be compared to NYC as a global metropolis still has characteristic accents which differ along geographical, ethnic and social lines.

Now, as The Coq wondered/asked, is this something to really lament?

A world where everybody looks, speaks and acts like everybody, is a world of boredom.

Brooklyn/NYC dialect should be preserved as a cultural heritage. It’s just stupid and sad to hear a Brooklyn Jew or a Jersey Italian speaking like someone from small-town Iowa.

    My two agorot.
