I once happened to mention to my rav that I was going to give a New Year card and present to my non-Jewish neighbour as appreciation for him being such a good neighbour and always helping out. My rav asked if I was giving him anything for xmas. I smiled. “I’m being serious” said my rav, “are you giving him anything?” I answered “of course not”. He told me that because the secular new year has a mekor (source in seforim) but xmas doesnt and is just a pagan holiday with no meaning at all, if one gives out cards its better to give out for xmas than new year!
With ref to the Stomach Band thread, this is another example of why its good to ask a shailoh even for seemingly trivial things!
