August 23, 2011 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #802345charliehallParticipantOnly three hurricanes have struck the United States with category 5 strength in the past century: The unnamed hurricane that destroyed much of the Florida Keys in 1935, Camille in 1969, and Andrew in 1988.

August 23, 2011 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #802348deiyezoogerMemberI remember as a kid (20+ years ago) a hurricane hitting NYC, aldough by the time it made land fall it was much weaker it still broke many sukkos in my neighborhood. (It was a day before Yom Kippur). Anybody remembers?
August 24, 2011 12:59 am at 12:59 am #802349☕️coffee addictParticipantyeah I remember, it was hurricane andrew or bob
August 24, 2011 4:01 am at 4:01 am #802350kgh5771ParticipantI think you mean Hurricane Gloria. And it happened in 1985. I remember taking apart our Sukkah before the hurricane hit. We also took apart my parents’ Sukkah. It eas a good thing that we did. The winds were so strong, that many Sukkahs were completely destroyed.
August 24, 2011 4:47 am at 4:47 am #802351ronrsrMemberI remember Hurricane Esther in 1961. I was a little kid but I was convinced she was Jewish since she had the same given name as my late grandmother.
August 24, 2011 4:48 am at 4:48 am #802352ronrsrMemberare men allowed to mix with female-named hurricanes?
August 24, 2011 8:13 am at 8:13 am #802353YW Moderator-42ModeratorMod 80, I think ron has a good point. You shouldn’t be calling this hurricane by its name since you are male and it is female. Didn’t you pay attention to the 4th lesson of the 8th week of Mod training?

August 24, 2011 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #802356YW Moderator-80Memberupdate from the AP:
Tourists began evacuating from a tiny barrier island off North Carolina on Wednesday as Hurricane Irene strengthened to a major Category 3 storm over the Bahamas with the East Coast in its sights.
August 24, 2011 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #802357YW Moderator-80MemberNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Wednesday he had ordered the state’s Office of Emergency Management to prepare for possible impact from Irene.
Cuomo said coastal zones were most at risk, although inland areas could get hit by heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Forecasters have warned that even if the center of the hurricane stays offshore as it tracks up the mid-Atlantic coast from the weekend, its wide, swirling bands could lash cities including Washington and New York with winds and rain, knock out power, trigger coastal storm surges and cause flooding
August 24, 2011 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #802358sarahbarah2MemberAs North Carolinas governor Bev Perdue said prepare for the worst pray for the beSt. It can’t hurt to prepare you might as well be ready then not be and realize lastminute that ur not ready for the storm.
August 24, 2011 10:53 pm at 10:53 pm #802359YW Moderator-80MemberIrene will likely then strengthen into a powerful Category 4 hurricane during its dangerous assault on the Bahamas into Thursday.
After leaving the Bahamas, Irene will take aim at New England this weekend.

August 25, 2011 12:01 am at 12:01 am #802364ronrsrMemberwas a time, when all hurricanes were named for females, that I wouldn’t mix with them at all. Getting blown around in the wind could lead to mixed dancing!
August 25, 2011 1:26 am at 1:26 am #802365Josh31ParticipantDoes she wear sunglasses and / or chew gum?
August 25, 2011 4:39 am at 4:39 am #802366ronrsrMemberno, but she will huff and puff and blow your house down.
Though in my experience, she usually just blows pieces of aluminum siding off, and turns them into dangerous, sharp object flying at 90+ miles per hour.
August 25, 2011 5:06 am at 5:06 am #802367ronrsrMemberI am ready for her in New England. Bring ‘er on!

August 26, 2011 4:56 am at 4:56 am #802381ronrsrMemberWe are truly fortunate to live in an age when hurricane’s paths can be predicted with some reliability. The first indication that all new englanders had that the hurricane of 1938 was coming was when it made landfall in Rhode Island. Authorities in Boston had less than an hour before the storm would inundate them. That was not enough time. Hundreds of people were killed.
Today, many scientists, pilots, flight crews, meteorologists, computer programmers, historians have used their time and great minds, given to them by their creator, to solve the hurricane prediction problem.
Now we have DAYS to prepare so no one in the midatlantic or northeast need die. Most of the people who do die during these affairs are usually doing something foolish, or trying to rescue someone doing something foolish. Prepare, make sure your neighbors are prepared, then enjoy the show. Then help clean up after the storm.
Have a happy hurricane.
August 26, 2011 6:26 am at 6:26 am #802382mazal77Participantmaybe some Tehillim readings are in order? We know who really is in control of the weather.

Oh, and I stand corrected regarding the hurricane
August 26, 2011 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm #802384TheGoqParticipantWishing everyone a good shabbos and a safe weekend. Adorable i know you usually wish the first good shabbos but i don’t know how to resurrect threads 🙂
August 26, 2011 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #802385adorableParticipantIll get that thread.
Coffee- awesome!
August 26, 2011 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm #802386ronrsrMemberTehillim may be in order, but preparation comes first. This is really a case of Hashem helps those who help themselves. Clear your yard of debris that can become deadly missiles in high winds and follow the advice of the authorities. They know of what they speak! If everyone acts properly, only property will be damaged, no people hurt.
Preparation first, tehillim second, please.
August 26, 2011 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #802387Sam2ParticipantI heard that several Rabbonim have already told their communities to keep their radios on over Shabbos in case the order to evacuate comes in.
August 26, 2011 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm #802388ronrsrMemberIf I read the posek right, it’s battery-powered radios, in case the power goes off.
The message: have a SAFE and happy shabbat, with an emphasis on the safe, so you can have many more.
August 26, 2011 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm #802390YW Moderator-80Member“NYC, Mid-Atlantic Brace for Irene’s Violent Strike
Irene remains on a path that will take the hurricane dangerously close to, if not over, the mid-Atlantic coastline and New York City Saturday night into Sunday, posing a serious danger to millions of people.
Irene could be “once-in-50-year” hurricane for the Northeast.
The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is confident that Irene will strike the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Saturday as a strong Category 3.
Beyond that point, Irene will track extremely close to or over the mid-Atlantic coast and New York City before plowing into western New England. This could mean the worst effects from a hurricane in the region in 50 years.
Irene is expected to track near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva coast Saturday night, then could pass within 30 miles of New York City on Sunday as a weakening Category 2 hurricane.”
