What do you think of the banning of iPhones from Rabbi Meir Baal Haness
How about Rav’s Karelitz Psak one need not return a lost iPhone
Do you think think the bans are good or bad?

July 29, 2013 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #968741takahmamashParticipantIt’s unfortunate that chareidim or sikrikim or whoever it is thinks they own these places. What’s next? Are they going to try to ban iPhones from the kotel as well? How about ma’arat hamachpela? I thought that these were the types of people who spent all their time learning; if they’re learning, how do they have time to worry about other people’s phones?
July 29, 2013 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #968742pixelateMemberThere is a built-in Ipad by the kever of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, with an app of chabad.org
July 29, 2013 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #968743truthsharerMemberI don’t believe that someone paskened that you don’t have to return an iPhone. Please provide source or retract.

Chill. trust me the CR threads do not end up in the Library of congress
July 29, 2013 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #968745zahavasdadParticipantI cant give outside links, but it was posted on another frum blog
July 29, 2013 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #968747zahavasdadParticipantIt was truly disheartening some of the comments posted.
Some people did not know who Rav Nissim Karelitz is and there was a tremendous lack of kavod
July 29, 2013 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm #968748agentemesParticipantThe Lubavitcher Rebbe said use technology for good things and there are a lot of Torah apps in the app store like artscroll new gemara which makes learning Eruvin alot easier

Not sure about “frum”, I know which site you are referring to.
“It was truly disheartening some of the comments posted.

Yes, although, disheartening is probably too mild. I get irritated by the same sort of shenanigans in the CR as well.

As jbaldy22 noted, it’s not as simple as posted here.
July 30, 2013 12:57 am at 12:57 am #968751jbaldy22MemberThe whole story on ynet seems a bit unclear. It does not seem from a simple reading of the story that the store owner or the man actually went to rav karelitz’s beis din. Seems to be a very poor piece of journalism.
July 30, 2013 6:25 am at 6:25 am #968752jewishfeminist02MemberWhy are there two threads for this?
July 30, 2013 11:52 am at 11:52 am #968753zahavasdadParticipant@JF I posted once, but YWN crashed and double posted it.
Maybe my point is being lost, there seems to be an obsession in some communities over an ‘iPhone” . There was a article on YWN about a “segula” for more children if you smash an iPhone. YWN editor commented that the ceremony was videoed on a smart phone.
The joke seems to be, Im Ok ,I dont have an iPhone I have an Android.
There seemed to be name calling at The Grave of Rabbi Meir Baal Hanass for those who owned one, even if they didnt carry it inside.
I think there was a psak a few months ago where someone damaged an iPhone and was not required to pay to fix it since it was trief. (Or something similar to that).

July 31, 2013 12:20 am at 12:20 am #968756WIYMemberIf you find a Jew’s unfiltered phone the best thing to do is put a filter on it and then return it. You are doing him a tremendous favor that he can never repay.
July 31, 2013 3:23 am at 3:23 am #968757Veltz MeshugenerMemberHalacha has begun developing in a new way. First, it is publicized on sensationalist anti-frum blogs, say in 2007. The reaction among the mainstream is, eh, you can’t believe everything you read; they’re just trying to stir the pot. Then people begin to acknowledge that yes, it is the practice among more right wing communities, and of course it works for them, but we each have our own rabbonim and my rov said it wouldn’t make sense for someone in the US, in fact it would be a bad idea which would cause more harm than good. Then it becomes something that is admirable, but definitely not a chiyuv. Then, if you don’t keep it, your kids can’t get into school – and it’s your fault; this has been the halacha since 2007.
July 31, 2013 3:58 am at 3:58 am #968758Sam2ParticipantWIY: Actually, that would be Assur. What right do you have to alter someone’s personal property? You would owe him for whatever the loss of browsing speed cost him.
July 31, 2013 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #968759WIYMemberSam2
So I guess it is better to do as Rav Karelitz paskens and just not return the phone.
July 31, 2013 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #968760jewishfeminist02MemberI am not familiar with the psak, but if the OP is correct that R’ Karelitz paskens that one “need not” return the phone, that is not the same thing as saying that one “may not” return the phone. Maybe you don’t have to take the initiative to seek out the owner, but if you have the phone and know who it belongs to, why not return it?
July 31, 2013 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #968761rationalfrummieMemberI am shocked by this psak. While I respect the rav, it is very surprising that he would not let someone be mekayem vehashev es hagezeilah, a mitzvah dioraisa!! Why can’t we be dan l’kaf zechus for our fellow Jews, and return their iphones, like any other metziah?
July 31, 2013 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm #968762jbaldy22MemberNot sure why everyone is getting so excited. most likely this psak was lo haya vlo nivra. wouldn’t be the first such made up psak and as I said earlier rav karelitz disagrees with this supposed “psak” in his own sefer making it much less likely the psak is real.
