February 18, 2009 8:55 pm at 8:55 pm #1083775areivimzehlazehParticipantames- re: mamazetz- I think nobody was really able to assist you because the expression/word is really “mamazetzER”. And as Joseph did mention earlier, this means the “the-mother-of-all” & has that type of connotation. In your example: it was a mamazether of a house- the biggest, grandest house ever

qwertyuiop: as to your fave word hazeeta: my sister started using it, i donno where she picked it up from[not here for sure]!!! it drives me nuts when she uses it, cause i keep wanting to yell ”hey that’s my dear friend qwerty’s fave word!!!”
February 19, 2009 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #1083785teenMemberwhats hazeeta?

February 20, 2009 2:51 am at 2:51 am #1083787qwertyuiopMemberasdfghjkl: 🙂

February 20, 2009 3:43 am at 3:43 am #1083788JosephParticipantames, yes.

ames: i believe so, and no i didn’t get confused from that, i got confused because syriansephardi said it means nebach, and you said it doesn’t.$
February 20, 2009 8:59 am at 8:59 am #1083791kapustaParticipantyoshi!!!! you havent been here in ages! youve been missed!
ames that very funny whenever ive heard the word used (outside of the CR) it was always haazita and i was wondering why everyone was saying it without the a at the end.
moish maybe to help prove the point (even though language wasnt one of the three r’s) lets say achshav ani iluy(a) mamash
could we go back on topic now?
February 20, 2009 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #1083792moish01Memberyou mean in pirkei avos when it describes the seven traits on a chochom and then the opposite seven are a golem?

February 22, 2009 3:13 am at 3:13 am #1083797JosephParticipantmoish is an anav in addition to a talmid chochom.
February 22, 2009 3:47 pm at 3:47 pm #1083798moish01Memberjoseph, you mean a person could be both?? 😉
and i don’t know where you get these weird ideas from. “not stupid” does not mean “talmid chochom.”
just by the way, define the term “talmid chochom.”
you’ll see i don’t fit into the category.
February 23, 2009 6:20 am at 6:20 am #1083799anonymisssParticipantmoish, I’ll turn the challenge over to you. Define the term talmid chacham.
~a~
February 23, 2009 7:19 am at 7:19 am #1083800moish01Memberwell, notice that people don’t get called a chochom, but rather a “talmid.” i’d say that a talmid chochom is someone who is learning from a chochom, which i just said is probably non-existent. so is it someone who is a talmid of chochma? which i would say is torah?
either way, i’m not a talmid of anyone.
February 23, 2009 7:33 am at 7:33 am #1083801kapustaParticipantanyone who has something to offer can really be called a chacham, no? so if someone learns something then why wouldn’t he be a talmid chacham?
ames great quote and lol
February 23, 2009 7:40 am at 7:40 am #1083802moish01Membernot really. think of great rabbis. you still call them “talmidei chochomim.”
i guess it’s probably because there’s no end to learning. maybe it’s supposed to be mussar or something. don’t ask me.
February 23, 2009 7:52 am at 7:52 am #1083803asdfghjklParticipantames: nice quote there!!!
February 23, 2009 7:53 am at 7:53 am #1083804moish01Memberames, you missed the point 😉
jk, i know you do, but they’re still called talmidei chochomim. the title “chochom” is instead of saying “rabbi.” seems like there are too many so-called “rabbis” that they need to differentiate between the real ones and the wanna-bes somehow… (tell me i’m not too far form the truth!)
February 23, 2009 8:12 am at 8:12 am #1083805moish01Memberi told you on friday. there are a bunch more but i’m not quoting them to you because i’m gonna get “talmid chochom” remarks from you and joseph and i’m not interested.
February 23, 2009 8:13 am at 8:13 am #1083806qwertyuiopMemberames: great quote.$
February 23, 2009 1:57 pm at 1:57 pm #1083807anonymisssParticipantI’m liking the turn that this thread took!
the root of the word talmid is learn. A talmid is someone who is learning and there is no specification as to from where he is learning. Chacham is a smart person.
I’ll leave y’all to draw your own conclusions…..

i think that’s right. someone correct me if i messed up somewhere. you want translations or you think you could manage?
oh now where exactly does it say that a chochom applies what he learns? (i’ll admit that i might be a tipesh, but the opposite of a chochom here is a golem.)
February 23, 2009 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #1083809moish01Membersorry about that. i probably could have googled and found them typed out in hebrew.

February 23, 2009 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #1083812teenMembermoish01: can i get a translation?
February 23, 2009 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #1083813moish01Membersure, teen!
there are seven traits in a golem and seven in a chochom.
a chochom:
- doesn’t speak before one who is greater than him in wisdom or in years
- doesn’t cut in while his friend is speaking
- doesn’t rush to answer
- asks questions that are on topic and answers appropriately
- answers what’s asked first, first and second, second (answers questions in the order they were asked)
- when he doesn’t know something he says “i don’t know”
- admits the truth
and the opposite seven are a golem.

February 23, 2009 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #1083815moish01Memberteen, you remember stuff from school? (by the way, do you go to school at all)
February 23, 2009 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #1083816SJSinNYCMemberI must be a golem – I am terrible about interrupting people I always rush to respond and I generally change the order 🙂 I don’t have a problem saying I don’t know though. I guess I am only part golem and cannot accompany Frodo.
February 23, 2009 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #1083817teenMembermoish01: yeh some stuff…ive been in and out of schools through out high school but im not in any school now
