True.
Unless one has a civil service government job, a pension is increasingly rare.
A safe pension is even more uncommon.
My opinion is that someone starting a career search may want to look into a civil-service job because of the benefits it comes with (this can easily be an entire thread).

June 22, 2009 1:10 pm at 1:10 pm #1084608anon for thisParticipantICOT, I agree that very soon private industry pensions will be extinct. It’s true that private companies are attempting to renege on promised health benefits & pensions. I read in the Wall Street Journal years ago about one company that stopped paying in retirees’ health benefits by claiming that the “lifetime guarantee” clause did not apply to the retirees’ lifetime, but to the fund’s lifetime. Now that automakers are declaring bankruptcy the problem will only worsen, especially because the PBGC will probably run out of money soon.
Regarding civil service jobs, I’m not so sure those are a panacea either. I have a relative who has been working for the federal gov’t for about 20 years now. During that time, many positions in her department have been eliminated through attrition, so now she is doing the work of more people. At one point, her boss considered eliminating her dep’t & replacing them with contractors.
I worked for a defense contractor for a couple of years. I think the military-industrial complex will be a growth industry for a while, both for gov’t employees & contractors, though of course only the former will have pensions.

June 22, 2009 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #1084613squeakParticipantmepal, why so down on the golden years?
June 22, 2009 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #1084614squeakParticipantRegarding pensions, while it is true that defined benefit pension plans are all but extinct (excepting those funded by the unlimited funds of the public), pensions themselves are not extinct or even on their way out. A 401K plan, 403b, 457 (b or f) etc, are all pension plans.
The difference is that in a traditional defined benefit pension plan, the company bears all the risk of fund growth. The companies have decided that the risk is too great. Therefore, defined contribution plans are the pension du jour. The investment risk is with the employee and the employer has no added responsibility when the black swans make an appearance. This is not necessarily a bad thing for employees.
June 22, 2009 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #1084615anon for thisParticipantaqueak, a pension is generally understood to mean a defined benefit plan, as in this definition from dictionary.com: “a fixed amount, other than wages, paid at regular intervals to a person or to the person’s surviving dependents in consideration of past services, age, merit, poverty, injury or loss sustained”. As you’ve noted, they’ve been replaced by defined contribution plans, but the matching funds that were provided by many empoyers to encourage contributions to these plans are also disappearing.

Thanks to you both, I picked up two new terms today: “PBGC” and “black swans”.
I’m not saying civil service is the perfect job.
It’s just that nowadays when many of us have 201k’s that used to be 401k’s, the idea of a smaller salary and slower promotions doesn’t automatically disqualify a civil service job from consideration, as it did for many of us 20 – 25 years ago.
This is especially true as we get older and consider post-career expenses, including health insurance.
…one company that stopped paying in retirees’ health benefits by claiming that the “lifetime guarantee” clause did not apply to the retirees’ lifetime, but to the fund’s lifetime.
What a chutzpa! I hope they didn’t get away with it. (If they did, a “lifetime guarantee” on any product is pretty much worthless.)

“A penny saved is a penny earned.”
– Benjamin Franklin
Here are some of my favorite quotes by Benjamin Franklin.
He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals.
Beware of the young doctor and the old barber.
God heals, and the doctor takes the fees.
A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue
you may never get over.
All would live long, but none would be old.
Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead.
I am in the prime of senility.
Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place,
but far more difficult still,
to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.
If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead and rotten,
either write something worth reading or do things worth the writing.
