Ok, so one of the major poskim in a very Jewish city, has no clue about specific hospitals (which people from his city area regularly go to), if and when Kohanim may enter. Now get this – he has no clue who to contact to find out!
What are Rabbis today, mishnah berurah’s for the visually impaired ? No more feeling of achrayus to take care of their communities halachic needs ?
On a practical note – anyone have the contact info for the organization for kohanim ?

Perhaps the problem isn’t with the Rav’s knowledge of halacha, but rather with his ignorance regarding the layouts and procedures that go on in modern-day hospitals?

This is something a rov should know or make it his business to find out. It is a shailah, after all. That said, it may take some doing to find out such information.
May 16, 2012 11:59 am at 11:59 am #874473LogicianParticipantOr last least he should know who to direct me to! [Or tell me, let me find out, get back to me.]
What really gets me, is that almost all shailos of a practical nature have someone taking care of them today. So its not even a question of him exerting himself on behalf of little old me. Its a question of caring about those who depend on you for their halachic needs, enough to be aware of resources out there to direct them to.
Thanks Mod42.

what city?
what hospital?
PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!
May 16, 2012 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #874475mythoughtsParticipantI was directed, by a known posek, to call the morgue and ask if there were corpses of Jewish people stored there. I tried to explain the nature of my question to the person answering the phone but they thought I was pranking them and hung up on me.
I could never get a straight answer from a rav about this. Very frustrating.

You called the wrong person. A better person to call would have been the hospital chaplain. Even if non-Jewish, he would certainly understand the need for an answer on this type of question (and his ne’emanus shouldn’t be any different than a random person answering the phone in the morgue).

May 16, 2012 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #874477LogicianParticipantmythoughts – call the morgue ?!
I can only imagine that you’re making fun, but I really don’t get your point. If I’m wrong, sorry, please explain.
May 16, 2012 6:54 pm at 6:54 pm #874478takahmamashParticipantThe Wolf has the best answer. Call the Chaplains’ office. If it’s a “very Jewish city,” odds are that a Rabbi will be on staff.
May 16, 2012 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #874479LogicianParticipantIt’s not in the “Jewish city”, its relatively near and people go all the time.
Lets not get started on that – I called the hospital, they give me the chaplain’s number, I call – it’s a member of the bikur cholim. Nice guy, just doesn’t even claim to know halachah. I don’t even think he knows the facts well enough to describe to the Rav all he’d have to know…

The chaplain’s job isn’t to be a Posek. His advantage is that he can contact the mourgue and they will take his inquiry sseriously. Any questions regarding the trustworthyness of the mourgue and how far tumah would actually spread will require the expertise of a Posek.
May 17, 2012 2:39 am at 2:39 am #874481LogicianParticipantSounds nice , but he said he couldn’t help me.
