Where do witches and wizards learn maths?
March 4, 2013 12:13 pm at 12:13 pm #1115533ToiParticipantin school. brickhead.
March 4, 2013 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #1115534just my hapenceParticipantIn the HP universe (which is what was being discussed…) they don’t appear to have any formal education before the age of 11 and all the subjects they learn in Hogwarts seem to assume knowledge of basic maths etc. Hence the question. And the insult was appreciated, thanks.
March 4, 2013 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #1115535🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantSome of them go to muggle primary school, although most are homeschooled.
March 4, 2013 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #1115536just my hapenceParticipantGamanit – mekor? The muggle-borns definitely go to muggle schools, but the rest?
March 4, 2013 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #1115537🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantInterview with J.K.R. that’s what she answered to the question as to which primary school wizard children go to…
March 4, 2013 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm #1115538Luna LovegoodParticipantjust my hapence – In hogwarts they learn Arithmancy which is similar to math as well as Alchemy,Herbology and Astronomy which are sciences.
Maybe it is considered common knowledge or it is assumed that they learn basic math (1+2, 6/3) and stuff like that home before turning 11.
March 5, 2013 12:01 pm at 12:01 pm #1115539just my hapenceParticipantGamanit – Ta! Do you know when this interview was and who it was with?
Luna – Aderaba, Arithmancy assumes prior knowledge of maths, is optional and only at a higher level, in other words NOT the ‘magic equivalent’ of maths.
March 5, 2013 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #1115540fkellyMemberAgree with just my hapence- Hermione says the Arithmancy is the hardest exam.

kai: Where do wizarding children go to school before Hogwarts?
JK Rowling replies -> They can either go to a Muggle primary school or they are educated at home. The Weasleys were taught by Mrs. Weasley.

March 7, 2013 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #1115543ChortkovParticipantWhy did Dumbledore not let Harry disarm Draco Malfoy, confund him/ use a memory charm to let Malfoy think he actually killed Dumbledore, and then hide, while still controlling the Order of the Phoenix? Why did he need to die? (Snape could have saved him from the potion)
March 7, 2013 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #1115544🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantHe was dying anyhow- not from the potion, but from the ring. A year previously Snape slowed the curse, but told him he has around a year left to live. That’s when Dumbledore arranged with Snape that Snape should kill him first, and so “prove” his loyalty with the Dark Lord, which everyone was suspicious over.
March 7, 2013 11:34 pm at 11:34 pm #1115545Luna LovegoodParticipantyekke – The elder wand was in Dumbledore’s possession and when Draco disarmed him the wand’s allegiance switched to Draco (without him knowing). Then Snape killed Dumbledore to cement his allegiance to Voldemort and Dumbledore was buried with his wand(really Draco’s) that Voldemort would later steal. Meanwhile, while Harry is on the run he ends up in Malfoy Manor and duels Draco, successfully disarming him causing the elder wand(currently in Dumbledore’s tomb) to become loyal to him. Then when Harry and Voldemort are dueling the elder wand(in Voldemort’s possession) will not kill Harry as it is loyal to him. The spell backfires killing Voldemort and so ends the final battle. It was a clever plot device use by JK to ensure Harry would win the fight without having to actually murder anyone. As for Dumbledore dying, it was to symbolize the end of Harry’s time at Hogwarts and the start of the final battle against Voldemort and the death eaters.
March 8, 2013 6:44 am at 6:44 am #1115546sammy16MemberDid this ever bother you? You cant go back in time to save harrys parents but you can go back in time to save a stupid bird Buckbeak and sirius from the dementors. Why couldnt you go back in time and save sirius again after he was killed later on? i have more questions on this series but this one bothers me the most!
March 8, 2013 9:21 am at 9:21 am #1115547just my hapenceParticipantsammy16 – They could save Buckbeak because they had already done so. That is, they could go back in time because back in time they had already gone back in time. They never did so with Harry’s parents or Sirius. It is a bit circular and paradoxical but that is how it’s explained in POA (Harry can do the patronus to save his past self because when he was his past self he saw his future self doing it). It’s a narrative device, that’s all….
March 8, 2013 11:45 am at 11:45 am #1115548YW Moderator-42ModeratorYou can’t go back in time to change the past, only to be mekayeim what already happened. Everything that happens after they go back in time already happened the “first time around”.
Hermione couldn’t go back to charms once she missed class because she missed it – it didn’t happen the first time so therefore never happened and never can.
March 8, 2013 12:40 pm at 12:40 pm #1115549ChortkovParticipantjust my hapence – They had already done so only because they did go back in time. If they would go back in time, they would have had to have saved Harry’s parents.
They only saved Buckbeack because they in the future went back in time, which is obviously the Time Paradox. The only reason why they didn’t save Harry’s parents, Dumbledore and everyone else in the past was because they didn’t decide to. If they would have decided to then automatically they would have in tha past.
Makes no sense. Sort of like “???? ?????? ?????” in R’ Chaim. Oh well.

March 8, 2013 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1115552shnitzyMemberThey are totally different styles. They can’t kick each other.
Given, Eragon is less juvenile, not necessarily a good/bad thing.

March 8, 2013 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm #1115556BYbychoiceMemberI think both harry potter and earagon are good books, they just have diffrent types of writers and depth to them, but if you like one you would prob like the other
March 8, 2013 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #1115557YW Moderator-42ModeratorWhen Dumbledore told them to go back in time, he already knew that Buckbeak and Sirius had escaped. He realized what must have happened and therefore was able to tell Hermione what to do. Nothing changed. They were just in 2 places at once as everything was happening.
March 8, 2013 10:17 pm at 10:17 pm #1115558YW Moderator-42ModeratorEragon and HP are my 2 favorite series – not sure witch is better, different styles. Though I’m currently leaning toward Eragon – better character and world development. The magic system in Eragon makes more sense.
March 9, 2013 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm #1115559ChortkovParticipantCan somebody give a brief summary of this Eragon series? And who wrote it?
March 10, 2013 1:27 am at 1:27 am #1115560OneOfManyParticipantSo much bad taste on this thread, tsk tsk. LOTR and Discworld are the only two fantasy series. Neil Gaiman can get honorary mention.
March 10, 2013 3:49 am at 3:49 am #1115561Luna LovegoodParticipantWhile Eragon and HP are both amazing fantasy series they can’t really be compared because they are both very different in their essence. Paolini created an entirely new world with a few parallels to our own while JK fit magic into our everyday world.
March 10, 2013 2:57 pm at 2:57 pm #1115562YW Moderator-42ModeratorThe underlying “physics” behind the magic is much better explained and makes more sense in Eragon. The way it works in HP leads to too many stiras/kashas onpf why couldn’t they just do such-and-such.
March 10, 2013 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm #1115563shnitzyMemberBecause in Eragon, much of the plot revolves around the magic itself. It needs such in-depth development. JKR focusses much more in weaving in complex theming, brought about through the development of relationships.
March 11, 2013 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #1115564ChortkovParticipantWhat is Eragon?
March 11, 2013 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1115565shnitzyMemberGoogle it. You’ll find a pretty comprehensive summary.
March 12, 2013 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1115566sammy16MemberEragon is written by Christopher paolini he started the first book when he was 17.
March 12, 2013 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #1115567Yserbius123ParticipantEragon was a fun series of books but I wouldn’t compare it to HP. It used too many cliches and followed the standard “Hero’s Quest” of fantasy books a little too closely. Also, a big chunk of books 2 and 3 were dead boring.
March 12, 2013 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #1115568shnitzyMemberAhem, he was actually 15 at the time.
March 15, 2013 4:21 am at 4:21 am #1115569sammy16MemberTrue.
March 15, 2013 4:30 am at 4:30 am #1115570aproudbygParticipantlotr is a great series and so is the prequel! but eragon does have to win against HP just for the fact that each book and page really holds the readers interest while HP does have some really boring books let alone pages,i could barely get through 1 and 2!
March 15, 2013 4:32 am at 4:32 am #1115571sammy16MemberLess of a wait for eragon also. Do u know if paolini is comin out with anything new?

And not seeing how Health is Gertrude. At all.
