Imagine someone calls you or emails you and says something like, “I was just on YWN, they have something called the CR, I was checking it out and theres someone ________ who sounds so much like you, Is it you?” or something to like that.
What do you do?
A. Disappear from the CR
B. Limit your posting
C. Continue posting as you did before, even if it means disagreeing with them
D. Other- be specific
June 28, 2009 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #799657chaverimMemberSay yes its me and continue posting like always.
The only reason otherwise is if you are posting bad stuff or something.
June 28, 2009 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #799658chaverimMemberThere’s nothing wrong with disagreeing. I’m sure you’ve disagreed many times with almost everybody in your life at some point.
June 28, 2009 10:08 pm at 10:08 pm #799659kapustaParticipantchaveirim, true, I think I meant to say posting personal things. I’m not sure where the disagreeing part came from.
June 28, 2009 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #799660mdlevineMemberto some of us, it is no big deal. I once received an email from my Rav asking if I was the one commenting on a local story on the main page. It happened again when another friend (who I had not seen for some time but we exchanged emails every now and then) sent an email asking if I was commenting in YW.
Simple philosphy: speak truthfully, be reasonably intelligent in your argument/statement/comment, try to be coherent in how you phrase it, be open to at least listen to the other side as you might actually learn something and you really do not have to fear if someone else figures out who you are. in otherwords, if I would not get up in front of an audience and make the same comment, I would not say it here.
June 28, 2009 11:20 pm at 11:20 pm #799662A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
Everyone knows that there is only one six hundred kilo bear who can type and that he seems to have insider information regarding the details of Jewish life in the abandoned sections of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
June 29, 2009 1:17 am at 1:17 am #799663mepalMemberKapusta, good question! I side with ames. SOOO many people know who MEPAL really is and I just tell them to join the loony fun! I don’t say anything here that I wouldn’t tell them so there is really nothing to hide.
June 29, 2009 1:33 am at 1:33 am #799664an open bookParticipantdon’t know if i’d tell everybody & anybody to join – depends who it is, i guess – but i’d go on posting as always.
June 29, 2009 3:09 am at 3:09 am #799665oomisParticipantI think the anonymity is what makes it easier to post. There are times I have strongly disagreed with someone, and there are times that people have strongly disagreed with me. It is more comfortable to know that were I to meet any of you IRL, especially those who have vocally disagreed, that I didn’t have to feel any awkwardness, because I would be unaware. By the same token there are many posters here whom I would love to know IRL.
So I guess it’s a double-edged sword.
June 29, 2009 5:40 am at 5:40 am #799666aussieboyParticipantI would deny it. Anonymity is a way to say what you really want to say without having to worry about the consenquences. Many people seem to think of it as a way to say something you know is wrong and because you dont want everyone to know that you believe such things you choose to remain anonymiss, but this isnt true. Just because you would be looked at as different for say something that doesnt mean what your saying is wrong.
People need to learn that what you believe is not necessarily the truth and to listen to other peoples opinions. You dont need to agree with it just learn to listen without yelling and bashing people for thier beliefs.
June 29, 2009 12:51 pm at 12:51 pm #799667SJSinNYCMemberBut then I realized, that I talk to you guys more often than the real people in my life! That is very fortunate!
Fortunate or sad? Just kidding Ames LOL!
I am more forceful about my opinions in the CR, but I am generally the same in real life…except IRL, I am less confrontational with people I don’t know. BUt with my family and friends, I generally say what I think.
June 29, 2009 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #799668YW Moderator-72Participantmaybe… If people knew who I was… I would get real coffee not just pictures…
June 29, 2009 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm #799669mepalMemberYes! You definitely would! And we wouldn’t even charge 😉
Maybe you’d even get a real blackberry!
June 29, 2009 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #799670xoxoMemberMepal, are you giving away free blackberries?
June 29, 2009 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #799671goody613Memberyeah alot of people know who i am thats in the cr, didnt stop me
June 29, 2009 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #799672WolfishMusingsParticipantI probably wouldn’t care too much and would continue posting as normal. There are some people who already know who I am IRL and, in any event, the positions that I purport to hold in my writings here and on other online forums are the same ones I publicly acknowledge anyway.
(So, why do I keep up the anonymity? That a good question… one that I’m not certain I really have an adequate answer to.)
The Wolf
June 29, 2009 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #799673yossi z.Memberi wouldn’t mind people knowing who i am. i am sort of a people person once i get to know someone a little bit (and doing it anonymously counts which would thereby include just about everyone in YWNCR)
June 29, 2009 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #799674mepalMemberxoxo, are you a mod? otherwise you do NOT deserve one.
June 29, 2009 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #799675WolfishMusingsParticipantMods get free Blackberries??? Where do I sign up? 🙂
The Wolf
We sure do, the editor even lets us come down to his garden and we pick them ourselves. The leftovers get baked into a pie YUMMY!
June 29, 2009 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #799676xoxoMemberI am better than a mod..
June 29, 2009 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #799677mepalMemberI KNOW that. You don’t deserve one anyways. Sorry. Maybe submit a mod application to the editor. When you become a one, you can let me know so that we can work on the blackberry’s then, with my discretion, of course.
June 29, 2009 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #799678goner88MemberI have a question. What would you do if you know you for sure know who someone here is? The person definatly doesnt know me I just know cuz her email address is the same as her username here…Should I just keep it to myself and not mention it to her at all?
June 29, 2009 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #799679goody613Memberarent you pretty much telling her right now?
June 30, 2009 12:59 am at 12:59 am #799680kapustaParticipantI’m home free, my email has nothing relating to cabbage or kapusta.
mepal, do you have an extra blackberry for the good queen? 😉
btw, I know more than one member IRL, and I might know another one. :/
June 30, 2009 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #799682mepalMemberkapusta (and anyone else that got the misconception), like I said, blackberry’s are only for mods (specifically 72) AFTER they are discovered. I’d make an exception for you, dear queen, but then I’d have to supply one for xoxo and probably the wolf as well. Unless we ‘discover’ each other, of course. Then that would be another story entirely…
June 30, 2009 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #799683jewishfeminist02MemberI once almost asked someone about this…I was set up with a family for Shabbos once when I was in Israel and the wife was on Facebook, I asked her why since she seemed pretty right-wing, and she answered that used for certain purposes, it can be okay. I then asked hesitantly “And do you use the Internet for other stuff also?” and she looked at me strangely and said “Yes, of course, what kind of stuff are you asking about?” and I almost asked if she was on YWN because she reminded me of a few people on here, but I decided to keep my mouth closed. Aside from Daniel Neubauer, most people here like to remain anonymous, so I figured I would let it be. I’ve just always wondered…:) Personally, though, I wouldn’t mind if someone I knew found me on the CR. I don’t think it would change anything about what I write.
Remember the inflammatory posting wars, where members made egregious personal attacks on one another, resulting in multiple threads getting closed? Maybe we can avoid that kind of stuff recurring if we imagine before pressing the send button that someone we know will read our post and know we wrote it.
June 30, 2009 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #799684xoxoMemberIt’s ok Mepal, 72 will get more use out of it than I will
July 1, 2009 3:30 am at 3:30 am #799685kapustaParticipantmepal, well its the thought that counts. In fact the thought that you were considering supplying me with one is taking up all that room instead of the actual blackberry. 😉
July 1, 2009 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #799686mepalMemberAaaaw. It would be cool if we all had blackberry’s!
July 1, 2009 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #799687AnonymousInactiveXoxo – better then a mod?!?!
July 1, 2009 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #799688mepalMemberEditor.
July 1, 2009 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #799689kapustaParticipant55, mepal, queens are better then mods and editors. but not self proclaimed queens. 😉
May 12, 2010 1:38 am at 1:38 am #799692HIEParticipantits so funny how ive been in the cr for almost 2 years and i discovered so many people in this time. The people that i discovered don’t even know i discovered them. One of the people i had a major argument with a while ago in the cr, a little while later i found out who it was, i felt very stupid although he didn’t know its me
May 12, 2010 2:42 am at 2:42 am #799693hereorthereMemberI have strong opinions that I express both IRL and online.
I say things that some might not like to hear but that I honestly think, need to be said.
I don’t ususally get “confrontational” about it unless someone first gets that way with me, then I respond the same way I am treated.
This is pretty much true both online and IRL, with one exception.
In IRL if the person “confronting me” is much bigger then me and looks like he is looking for excuses to start something physical I may back off a bit.
I do not change my opinion or apologize for it, but I may not state it as strongly.
Then there have been times when I stated my opinion in cases like that even more strongly.
Since no one knows what psychos who live for vendettas, might be reading these posts; For that reason, I appreciate the anonymity, of this website.
May 12, 2010 3:56 am at 3:56 am #799694mischiefmakerMemberSomeone I know figured me out pretty much as soon as I made my own username. Yeah, I’m still posting as you see though now I’ll be more careful with what I say. Maybe I’ll make a new account and then I could say whatever I want to.
May 12, 2010 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm #799695Dr. PepperParticipantI once almost had my cover blown but my quick thinking saved me.
Some one said to me “Hey you have to see this, some one is impersonating you. Check out this website called ‘The Yeshiva World’ and go to the ‘Coffee Room’. There’s a thread there called ‘The Riddle Thread…’ where someone goes by the name Dr. Pepper and asks the same kind of riddles that you would.”
I said “Oh, it’s probably a former student of mine. Can you do me a favor? Tell the guy to get a life. Thanks”
The person must have just been a lurker because they never posted it. That was the closest call I ever had.
May 12, 2010 1:06 pm at 1:06 pm #799696volvieMemberHey, I was the guy who told you that!
May 12, 2010 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #799697boredstiffParticipantMe and my friends all post under the this user name, so we all know who posts what. I guess anyone who doesnt use our name wouldn’t be able to figure us out!
May 12, 2010 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #799698boredstiffParticipantBut if anyone did figure us out, i probably would stop posting. from the comments we posted, its probably not so hard for s/o who knows us to figure us out.But so far that didnt happen!
May 12, 2010 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #799699WolfishMusingsParticipantI’d still stick around. If you read my writings, you’d know that I was never all that hung up on the anonymity. And besides, the opinions I express here are no different than the ones I would express in real life.
The Wolf
May 12, 2010 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #799700bptParticipantI can’t believe I missed this thread 10 months ago (unless I was not a CR addict yet), but my wife tells me this is probably going to happen one day (and she will shoot me when it does!)
Truth is, if any of my “real world” hockers were to read my posts, they would spot me in a flash, as the ideas / writing style is what they hear / get e-mails from me all the time.
Biggest fear? My future mechutonim (or worse, future D-I-Ls!) are CR members and will “out” me right at the l’chaim!
Uh oh, there goes my negotiating tactics!
May 16, 2010 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm #799701bein_hasdorimParticipantI am a very private person & I value other ppls privacy too,
so I would prob deny it, though I would continue posting as before.
There’s like only a few ppl who know my true identity
(unless someone blabbed!)though I don’t believe they are frequent posters. It’s nice to get into a heated discussion with no shouting, just CAPS!! One can always get to the truth & root of something when enough ppl & a variety of opinions are shared,
(or forced upon us) 😉
May 18, 2010 4:32 am at 4:32 am #799702HidingUnderCoverMemberI found my uncle on here, a serious controversial poster (you all hate him) and I told him in person 😛 He’ll probably figure me out from this post. Now won’t that be embarrassing.
May 18, 2010 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #799703smartcookieMemberHiding- did you know he’s here or did you recognize his posts and discover him here?
May 22, 2010 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #799704Bais Yaakov maydelParticipanttheres plenty of BY maydels around-i think-so im pretty anonymous. once though-months ago for those who dont rec. me-i mentioned in diff. places where various people in my family are in yeshiva and someone warned me i was being too specific…you never know
May 22, 2010 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #799705fabieMemberJust keep away from facebook!
June 27, 2010 5:04 am at 5:04 am #799706HidingUnderCoverMemberSmartcookie- I recognized him easily. Just like he is when he argues with everyone in real life.
June 27, 2010 5:15 am at 5:15 am #799707KashaMemberHiding – Is your old screen name chasid-of-Hashem?
June 27, 2010 5:45 am at 5:45 am #799708HIEParticipantthere are atleast 7 people that know me in the cr. i know like 10 people. over 2 years you get to know manyyyy people including a moderator which i found a while ago.
it’s fun.
but i would not stop posting cuz everything (or almost everything) i post is legitimate.
June 27, 2010 5:56 am at 5:56 am #799709smartcookieMemberAm I the only one who hasn’t figured out anyone around here?
