“but the facts are the facts.”
The fact is, there are most likely millions of jewish neshamos out there we dont know about. So I dont have a special kinship with bernie sanders or albert einstiein because they are/were halachically Jewish.
Who cares about amira l’akum with regards to this discussion? Ha yea, I will charge interest to a non-Jew and Bernie Sanders alike. When Bernie takes my money away Im going to demand it back with interest just like I would charge interest to any non-Jew. Just like a goy, I would never allow Bernie Sanders to daven for the amud either. Because he is not Jewish in any meaningful way.
February 25, 2016 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1139613newbeeMember“So there is definatly proof that there hasnt been a jewish president”
lol, thats utter nonsense. That is not proof at all.
“then you dont care about Pikuach Nefesh. Einstein also likely saved lives too”
This is also utter nonsense.
February 25, 2016 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #1139614gavra_at_workParticipantAlso, please name some of “all the Gedolim in Medinat Yisrael” that support it there as well as where they wrote this.
Rav Shteinman, Rav Chaim, and L’havdil Rav Elyashiv and Rav Ovadya Yosef ZTL, to name a few. It shows in their votes (via Shas and Agudah), which are well documented.
You can argue that it is different (for example, Rov Yisroel in Eretz Yisroel), but you can’t argue that a true welfare state (single payer, minimum guaranteed income) would be a boon for Kollel Bochrim in America and increase Limud HaTorah.

“Ha yea, I will charge interest to a non-Jew and Bernie Sanders alike. “
I don’t think that is halachicly sound.
Though I cant help but notice you didn’t answer DY’s question. Regarding amira lakum. I’m not sure why you say it isn’t relevant
You also didn’t answer Sam’s regarding marrying a ger.
I have some more: Would you eat Bernie Sander’s chametz after PEsach? What about John Smith’s?
February 25, 2016 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #1139616yehudayonaParticipantChristmas Tree, ask your Rosh Yeshiva if it’s permissible to charge interest to Bernie Sanders.
February 25, 2016 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm #1139617zahavasdadParticipantIt is also proof the the majority of Americans (and US presidents) are of either British or German Decent. There are likely more jews living in Great Britain today than any other time in history. Jews never really lived there and were expelled in 1190 and never officially let back in (Slowly the laws were changed to allow them, but it wasnt one event)
In Germany which wasnt a country until 1870 jews never really were a large part of the population and they did not really assimilate until the mid 19th century by which time most of the german immigration to the US already occured
February 25, 2016 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #1139618yehudayonaParticipantInteresting that the ads that appear here are for things like “cheap Christmas trees” (I should hope they’re cheap in February) and “Christmas tree decorations.”
February 25, 2016 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #1139619Sam2Participantnewbee: So every Ger is a Safek Mamzer and Assur to marry?

Sorry about that.
February 25, 2016 3:26 pm at 3:26 pm #1139622mddMemberNewbee, stop dreying the kup. Your Rosh Yeshivah does not know history. He is simply wrong. Also, learn some “Netzach Yisroel” by Maharal or some other seforim. They’ll teach you what it means to have a Jewish neshamah.

So every Ger is a Safek Mamzer and Assur to marry?
Can there be a mamzer situation in the absence of any halachic marriage whatsoever?
February 25, 2016 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm #1139625JosephParticipantAvram: Sure. Incest is one example. Also, a purported non-Jew may have sinned with an eishes ish who did have an earlier halachic marriage that never terminated and generations later none of the decedents were aware of their Jewish lineage.
February 25, 2016 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1139626zahavasdadParticipantCan there be a mamzer situation in the absence of any halachic marriage whatsoever?
I think it depends on the Posek, Rav Moshe I think tried to use this line of thinking to prevent Mamzer, but I think Rav Elyshiv felt differently
February 25, 2016 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #1139627PhilParticipantHilchos Matanos Aniyim does not contain anything that can even be remotely misconstrued to support a generous welfare state. Even by the most creative Torah-twisters of the world like Charlie and his spiritual adviser, Avi Weiss.
To the contrary, based on the tzedaka parameters enumerated there, both regarding the giver and the recipient, the RAMBAM would be against such a system. Such sick “generosity” has taken trillions of dollars in income from the pockets of hard-working people and mostly wasted it on those who despise hard work. Worse, it has created an increasing cycle of dependency that has ruined generations.
Then there’s the silly idea of advocating a welfare state to support able-bodied people who decide to learn in kollel. That wouldn’t be considered tzedaka, which is mandatory. At best, for the actually deserving few, it would be considered hachzakas haTorah, which isn’t mandatory.

Good points, thank you. Those cases would be extremely rare I would think, even given newbee’s calculus.

So we see that all these stuff about “safek mamzerim” does not hold water – and see what Ulla said to Rav Yehuda regarding this (Kiddushin 71b). Unfortunately, some people have nothing to do but throw up smokescreens.

Thats a good example. But im talking about people having Jewish neshamos, there are millions of people that have Jewish neshamos Im sure. There is a good chance there has been a presidential candidate with a Jewish neshama. So Im not going to post Einstein photos on my wall and brag how he was a Jew- it means nothing to me.
February 25, 2016 7:36 pm at 7:36 pm #1139632☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLet it be noted that you haven’t defended your statement that he is not Jewish in any meaningful way being shown to be k’neged halachah.
February 25, 2016 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #1139633screwdriverdelightParticipantubiquitin, I actually raised the issue because I couldn’t figure out [at first] what you meant.
Incidentally why do people get a kick out of these obviously silly outlandish statements most holocaust victims werent Jewish, “Much of India, Spain, Africa, the US, all of Europe” are probably Jewish (ALL of Europe? Really?)
I wasn’t sure if the absent punctuation marks were: a comma after the word “statements”, quotation marks before “most” and after “Jewish,” or if there was supposed to be a period after “statements” and “Jewish”.
February 25, 2016 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #1139634newbeeMemberDaasYochid: There are places in halacha were a “Jew” like Bernie Sanders is treated like a goy and other times he is treated like a Jew keneged halacha. Who cares? He blatantly doesn’t believe in Hashem or keep any of the Torah- hence he is not a Jew in any meaningful way.
He thinks the Torah is outdated and silly.
Use your common sense. He is not Jewish in any meaningful way. This is not a halachic conversation. I dont really debate halacha on this site, for that I talk to my rov.
February 25, 2016 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #1139635☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDon’t you think halacha is meaningful?

February 25, 2016 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #1139639newbeeMemberLike I said, in some cases halacha considers him to be like a goy in some cases it doesn’t. Apikorsim are viewed very harshly.
The fact that her kids wont have to convert or I cant use him on shabbos? I dont consider these things meaningful when it comes to hanging his picture up on my wall- no.
February 25, 2016 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm #1139640newbeeMemberOh wow, Bernie Sanders is not allowed to vacuum the shule on shabbos before mincha and Trump would be allowed to according to many Rabbis!

I personally asked Harav Moshe Heinemann, shlita, this very question. He replied that supporting able-bodied people who choose to learn in kollel, while laudable, is not considered tzedaka, which is mandatory. It’s considered hachzakas haTorah, which is completely voluntary.
The Gemara in Bava Basra is discussing tzedaka, which is mandatory and therefore ch”v taken by force if not given willingly. Tzedaka is to help those who can’t otherwise help themselves. Not to help those who choose not to help themselves, whatever the reason.
February 25, 2016 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #1139643gavra_at_workParticipantI personally asked Harav Moshe Heinemann, shlita,

What a childish red-herring, even from you. This is a simple question of the definition of tzedaka and nowhere do the Gedolim of E”Y disagree. Regarding the ovens, Harav Heinemann, shlita, told people to listen to the Gedolim.
Get back to work, gavra.

Yes for sure.
February 25, 2016 11:43 pm at 11:43 pm #1139651newbeeMemberMods, please change my subtitle back to member. I do not thinks its appropriate to change usernames that retroactively apply to all older posts without the users consent.
FYI a subtitle is not a username and consent is not needed for modification
February 25, 2016 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm #1139652newbeeMemberOk but I find it insulting and it applies to all my other posts. It appears right under my username and is part of the name.
You can do what you wish but I request you to revert it back to member or at least delete all of my previous posts on this site. If you prefer I do not come back or make a new account I will respect that and not come back here.
I’m not really sure what your issue is. Nobody has ever complained about not giving consent for changes
February 25, 2016 11:55 pm at 11:55 pm #1139653newbeeMemberBecause my name has been permanently changed in a clearly mocking fashion. If it was changed to something neutral (as it was before) it would not have bothered me.

Because it was changed to newly evergreen. Pretty obvious.
Plus, evergreen trees are always green. Also, my favorite tree is oak. But evergreens are a close second.

Nobody is saying you should somebody’s picture becasue he is Jewish. Nobody here is saying you should vote for somebody becasue he is Jewish these are straw-men that you have made up.
What we are arguing on is two statments that you made which are both factually and logically wrong.:
1) “Much of India, Spain, Africa, the US, all of Europe- im sure many of these people are techinically Jewish”
and (to a greater extent)
2) “Because he is not Jewish in any meaningful way.”
Several direct questions challenging one or both of those incorrect assertions have been asked and you have thus far not even attempted to answer. (specificly: why you dont consider halachicly Jewsih “meaningful”? whether you can eat Bernie Sander’s Chametz after PEsach? Wether you can eat a Goy’s Chametz after PEsach? If Amira L’akum can ever be utilized? differences between Sander’s and other sregarding conversion, MArriage etc etc etc.)
All you say is “I wont be posting his photo on my wall now.”
That sit the issue. I dppnt think anybody here has a picture of Sanders. Johnson or Einstein for that matter, on their walls.
As for your subtitle. I’m not clear why you oppose it “If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I’m a Christmas Tree” Well he is (even if you, in oposition to chazal, don’t consider it “meaningful”) Which of course makes you ” a Christmas Tree” Either be proud and embrace what you are, or admit you were mistaken.
BTW mods, I never thanked you for my subtitle. It nice not to have the generic “member” i feel more a part of this community, so thank you.
February 26, 2016 2:27 am at 2:27 am #1139658The QueenParticipantI agree with ubiquitin on both points. I take issue though with suggesting he be proud of being a Christmas tree, that’s too much.

I clearly remember reading another members surprise at getting a subtitle without being asked. Sorry I don’t remember who or in which thread.
Whatever newbees opinions are, it’s not nice to give him a name he finds offensive. I vote you remove it.
Posters are often surprised, but I myself do not recall anyone commenting on it being done without consent as that is rarely if ever the practice. Either way, I had removed it immediately. I do appreciate, however, your coming to his defense. It is a beautiful midda that I would love to see more often among us, so thank you.

Star-K’s website still says you can change the temperature on Yom Tov.
I’m not saying he isn’t a bigger Talmid Chochom than I will ever be, but his shittos are not mainstream EY Charaidi. Neither are Rav Hershel Shachter’s, so if you told me that he told you what you quote, I would say the same thing.
