i’m looking for an original theme for a sheva brochas. S/thing with an effective colour scheme, and ideas of foods that could be served that could match the colour/theme.
You can do a Mexican theme and then mybat, mazca, and tamazaball could give you ideas for different authentic Mexican foods. Or you can go with “fake” Mexican food and have “make your own tacos” putting out the meat, vegetables, re-fried beans, guacamole, etc.
You can also have chips and salsa – mild, medium, hot – to taste.
Etc.
i might sound like an idiot but whats the connection btw tamazaball and mexico?

im from mexico, my sis made my other sis a mexican theme for her sheva berachot, she put green, red,and white tableclothes and put quesadillas, enchiladas, mole ,red rice, tostadas ,tamales,etc. it was very nice i think they put a mexican hat on the buffet table. its a very good idea.

Forgive my ignorance, but why do sheva brachos need a theme?
And on a related note, I once was one of the hostesses for a sheva brachos with a “theme.” The theme was international. One of the hostesses was a professional chef and wanted to show off.
We had guacamole, fish toast, vegetable soup, kim chee, some kind of chicken, creme-filled pastry swans and “spaghetti & meatballs” cake. There was other stuff, I just can’t remember it.
The vegetable soup was burnt, the kim chee had not marinated nearly long enough, and the “spaghetti & meatballs” cake was just plain stupid. There were a lot of other problems, too.
The only theme you need is good food and people who want to be somayach the chasson and kallah.

An Islamic theme, with female guests dressed in burqas, kids wearing suicide belts, no alcohol, nooses hanging from the ceilings, and Middle Eastern and Pakistani food. Just don’t be surprised when your guests include the police, FBI and…Youssef al Qattab comes in his pedicab. :))))))
Two different sheva brochos I attended have really stuck in my mind.
1. American theme, tableware was all red, white and blue. Waiters/waitresses wore Uncle Sam Hats and served typical American menu.
2.Smiley Theme. Black tablecloths centre pieces made up of a large boquet of yellow smiley balloons. Walls were decorated with smilees. It made such a happy atmosphere sorry I dont remeber the menu!
Pardon my ignorance but what is wrong with good ole simchas chassan vekallah with song, dance, and divrei Torah, why do you need these goyishe themes? Am I missing something living in Eretz Yisrael?
How about “MiSameach Chassan Vikallah”.

haifagirl rwndk1 jphone im with you on this one. its a seudat mitzvah where does uncle sams red white & blue come in to be misamach chosson v’kallah?? I was shopping in boro park recently for some baking items that i needed for a sheva berachot i was making. three people stopped me and asked me what the theme was! i guess just plain beautiful and elegant doesnt cut it anymore in this messed up world of ours.
One of the nicest things one person did was to give out recipe cards to the guests asking them all to write their own recipe for life. The cards are then collected and given to chosson and kalla. If there is time some interesting ones can be read out
Mole? I’ve usually seen it as part of pollo con mole. Why ruin perfectly good chocolate by putting it on chicken? (I don’t like chicken.)

A Theme for Sheva Brachos?!? Did i read correctly? Mysay: where do u live that ppl. have such idea’s? I live in Bklyn & never heard about thi s& i’ll be making sheva Brachos tom. i”yh.

“starting on time”. THAT would be a great theme.
I’m with jphone on that one. I hate getting somewhere on time and having to wait because 7:00 really means 7:30.
Well talking about weddings starting on time. In Mexico the community used to have a very big problem because the weddings never started on time until one day somebody thought of a great idea. Before the wedding the family gives a deposit around one thousand dollars if the wedding gets delay, the community keeps the money if they start on time they refund the money, and guess what. Everybody learned to be on time if they say wedding is at six, the wedding almost always starts at six, and so on. The only reason is because the community has a very big input on everything here and people have to pay.

During the summer i was invited to a sheva brachos and was told “its called for 7:30”. My ride got me there at 8. The chosson/kallah showed a bit after 9. The theme for this sheva brachos quickly became who could say mazel tov and get out the fastest. They had to ask people to please stay so that they would have a minyan for birchas hamazon and sheva brachos.
Jphone thats how it is everywhere.thats why its better to invite mostly family to the sheva berachs,that way they stay longer.
You can always make syrian food and put arab hats on all the guests.
Mazca, no arab hats on the table, please. Syrian food is yum. Arab hats are not.

is that your question sunflower? because i answered that i am from mexico, so i can help out with the mexican theme. i can also help out with kibbes, laghmagines,keftes,etc-syrian style theme
You can do an around the world theme.
Every table a different country with that country’s food and flag.
Tamazaball. At the Sheva Brachos i attended, the family all left too. Its a chutzpah to make anyone sit around and wait, even family.
To top it off, the chasson and kallah were busy texting their friends half the time they were there.
Unfortunately in our community its the norm to start two hours late. If its called for seven you dont even start heading out till 8:30 – 9:00. The chatan and kallah make their grand entrance way after 9. Its really not fair especially to the guests who never heard of such a thing and are there by 7:15. The main course at all the weddings here is served at midnight. Never before that. I wish there was some way to change that.
Jphone if you would see what time the chattan and kallah show up to the sheva berachot in mexico you would be shocked.oh and the guests. (10:30)
One woman I know who makes a lot of sheva brachos tells the guests (and the chosson and kallah) that her husband has to leave for his shiur at 8 p.m. (of course, that only works if your husband really does have a shiur at 8 p.m. as hers does). If they don’t bentch by the time he has to leave, they won’t have a minyan.
This usually works.
maybe a black and white theme. It looks really sharp 🙂

Well all the affairs during the middle of the week start after ten in Mexico because all the balebatim have to learn every night so they always show up around ten, all sheva brachos start at that time, birthday parties, engagements, etc. Tonight I have an engagement party it will probably start at ten. And we have very few weddings during the week . Usually weddings are Sundays at 2 pm or 6 pm punctual. Sometimes couples wait a long time to get marry because everybody wants to get marry on Sunday. But the rabbis are pushing people not to wait and get marry during the week. So even before they go out they try to reserve the date. lol
Wow mazca you have alot of late nights over there. But its really nice to know that the balebatim dont give up their learning for engagement parties and its really special that people respect that and schedule parties for afterwards.

Best ima the problem is that they finish learning at around 9:30 and the events don’t begin before 10:30. But I really shouldn’t complain, we should always be in simchot!!
like..gefilta fish, & chrein; Chulent, kugel,chopped liver, chicken soup, with
Matzoh balls. schmalz herring, deli pickles, cole slaw, kasha knishes,
& a old guy singing hava nagilah, with a fiddler & an accordionist.
don’t forget the shlivovitz, & chivas.
seriously though you can have a
chanukah or purim theme depending on it’s proximity to them.
Mysay: If you go with bein_hasdorim’s old school Jewish teme, be sure to invite me. I’m especially looking forward to hava nagilah. Haven’t heard that in years.
Or you could make a deli theme!!
once I made a chinesse sheva berachot, egg rolls and chinesse food. and of course if you want chinesse hats. lol
