There is a somewhat informative thread from a couple of years ago about Passaic /Clinton. I want to move closer to work (Brooklyn) and the commute is tough from Monsey. Please let me know about the area. I am recently married and would like to live near a nusac Sefard shul.
There is a little info online but not much. What area of Passaic or Clifton should I be looking into? What is the difference between Passaic and Clifton? How is the commute into Be?

November 2, 2014 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm #1045363writersoulParticipantI’m really sorry that I can’t give immediately helpful information, but I do know that Passaic is a wonderful community for young couples and that there is an active housing market for apartments in the area. I believe that there are Passaic internet boards- if anyone has the information about one, it might be a good idea to join and ask there.
Good luck in your move!

1122334455-if you want me to look around for some housing options just say so.
November 2, 2014 2:22 pm at 2:22 pm #1045367ima1997MemberNot much of a difference between Passaic and Clifton. It’s basically one community with the same schools, shuls, stores, and mikvah. There are a few minyanim that are nusach sfard, spread out around the area. Best thing is to contact a real estate agent in Passaic, and she would be able to fill you in on the demographics. Traveling to Brooklyn is anywhere from 40 mins-60 mins, by car. Of course it can take longer depending on how bad traffic is. If you want, I can give you the name of a real estate person to contact

November 2, 2014 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm #1045369yentingyentaParticipantI get up here and still live in passaic for over 20 years. I also work at the only frum pediatric office in the community. I know lots about passaic.
Ask away if you have specific questions.

November 2, 2014 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #1045375Moshe in IsraelParticipantAhavas Israel is nusach Ashkenaz. So if you’re looking for nusach Sefard, you would better off at Agudath.
But more importantly, I agree with takahmamash. If you’re already moving, move to Israel.
Just remember, Mitvot performed outside of Eretz Yisroel are just practice.

It’s for safety reasons
November 3, 2014 2:30 am at 2:30 am #1045381squeakParticipantWhat is Passaic?
You said ask any specific questions, so I did.
November 4, 2014 6:15 am at 6:15 am #1045384HealthParticipantsqueak -“What is Passaic?”
It’s a town in Jersey with only Jews, Puerto Ricans & Mexicans.
November 4, 2014 6:32 am at 6:32 am #1045386jewishnessParticipantIt is a great place. You get to leave the over stuffy cramped no parking life of Brooklyn, Queens etc. Homes cost less than the city and the commute is not long to Manhattan (shorter than taking the train from Flatbush believe it or not)
The people are friendly and you have a sense of community, something sorely lacking in some other large communities..You are close to all the in town communities of New York, Monsey/upstate, Lakewood, Long Island, other New Jersey communities etc..it is truly an excellent location.
Very good schools, shuls, and people. Kosher Eiruv. What more can a Yid ask for?
November 4, 2014 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #1045387yehudayonaParticipantTo get to NYC, you have to take a bridge or tunnel. Sometimes there are major delays. Just sayin’.
November 4, 2014 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm #1045388squeakParticipantEveryone in the world knows that. Its just part of living in Brooklyn, if you ever want to go in to NYC proper you need to take a bridge or a tunnel. One disagreement though – there are always major delays, not just sometimes.
November 4, 2014 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #1045389enlightenedjewMemberI lived in Passaic/Clifton for 25 years, grew up there. It’s a great place to live, relatively diverse community. You won’t get as much house/property for your money though, be aware of that. Prices can range from lo – hi depending on the house and depending on what’s for sale. Not much difference between Passaic and Clifton as far as I can tell – just that a number of years ago Clifton’s frum community was pretty sparse – it’s exploded in last 10-15 yrs as Jews have pushed out further towards Rt 3.
P/C is more densely populated and far less spread out than Monsey/Ramapo area, which means that if you’re willing to walk 1 mile or so, you don’t have to constrain yourself to being right near a Sfard shul – pretty much all is walk-able. I used to walk from my house on one side of town near Clifton to the bus stop on Van Houten ave – took me 20 mins, max. Stores and malls/shopping are all 10-15 min drive max away – unlike Monsey area where it could take you nearly an hour of driving just to get to Target and back. I used to be able to make it as far out as Willowbrook Mall in 15 mins. K&K Kosher food store is on Main Ave 5 mins from everywhere in P/Clifton, Shoprite is 5-7 mins, Acme 5 mins, Amazing Savings 5 mins, Macy’s 15 mins, Target/Costco 5 mins.
What you will likely get is a far better commute. I live in Monsey area (Wesley Hills) as well and am sick and tired of the commute (I work in east Midtown) and would love to move further south closer to NYC as well. It could easily take 2+ hrs there and back, currently, plus is over $100/month more expensive. The commute from P/Clift as I recall to Manhattan (I did it for 5 years) is about 1-1 1/4 hr door to door, less going home, by bus. NYC is accessible by train as well, more quickly, on a transfer to Penn Station-NYC from Secaucus Station. Brooklyn may be a bit more on a drive, you can bus/train into the city and subway it to Bklyn, tho that will probably take longer than driving (depending on where in Bklyn). You can bypass NYC on a drive altogether via Goethals=Staten I Expwy=Verrazanno, though tolls on VZ are steep, and can be a little trafficky on Stat IExpwy in the AM going to Bklyn. There are definitely ppl driving to Bklyn each day, so carpooling is an option. Either way, your commute to Bklyn will definitely be better than from Monsey, hands down.
I don’t know if you’re married or not – but those extra 30-40 mins you save on commute (not to mention the $100+/month) are very, very precious, when you have a wife who works as well and has to fend for herself with the kids morning and nite while you shlep for 2+ hours to and from the house. It may seem like nothing on paper (“what’s 30-40 mins or so more on a commute?”) but it can gradually grind you down. I generally don’t see my kids from Sunday to Sunday, since they’re sleeping when I get home, and I usually leave my office no later than 5-5:30. My whole weekday life revolves around and is deeply affected by my commute.
Just my 2 cents.
November 6, 2014 12:29 am at 12:29 am #1045390yentingyentaParticipantThe clifton side of Passaic has expanded lots. Now there is more ppl on the other side of main by 21 and more people further down closer to 3. Commuting doesn’t have to be by car. Easy access to njt trains and buses. I used to commute to NYC for school and the trains are a nice change to sitting in traffic.
ALSO re nissuch sephard, rabbi berkovics has a Sephardic minyan. The tif and rabbi isaacson’s shul are sephard as well. Issacson and aerobics are more central, tif is not.
November 6, 2014 2:21 am at 2:21 am #1045391HealthParticipantYenta – I didn’t know that they have “aerobics” in Shul!
November 6, 2014 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #1045392squeakParticipantWait- Passaic is a real place? I thought it was just a euphamism for when we weed out misfits from society… like, “Dave graduated from aish someach and is going to live in ‘Passaic’ or ‘Baltimore'”. It means the poor soul is an unperson. Was I wrong about that? Is Baltimore also a real place?
November 6, 2014 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm #1045393ivoryParticipantI think your subtitle is incorrect! You’re not just speaking to the man on the moon, you ARE the man on the moon!

Yes – I don’t understand the tone of some of the posts here. At 8-9mi from NYC, how can this place be ‘out of town’?!
Passaic/Clifton is really a great place to live. That doesn’t mean it’s totally without it’s flaws, but overall the quality of life is relatively high. It also gets a unfair label of being a ‘yeshivish’ town; in reality there’s a wide range of people residing there who get along rather well. As far as I remember the political acrimony that exists in Ramapo (Monsey) is of a far lower level in P/C.
November 13, 2014 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #1045402torah is the bestParticipantPassaic / Clifton is a great Jewish community to move to, with Jewish families continuously moving in to the neighborhood, the message group for the Passaic Jewish community is a Yahoo Group called PassaicJews you can visit their site at passaicjews.com, the Ahavas is the shul with the many minyanim through out the day, however there are about 15 shuls currently in Passaic, If you are looking for Nusach Sefard Minyonim, you have a choice of the Following: 1. Chabad on Brook Avenue 2. Rabbi Issacsohn on Ascension Street 3. Tiferes on Passaic Avenue 4. Khal Yereim (Rabbi Berkovics) on Main Avenue.
It is a Wonderful place for Jews to live and the people are very friendly and helpful.
Just keep in mind if you frequent Ahavas for their many convenient minyanim, their Rabbi’s views are not always in accordance with typical yeshivish/frum hashkafa, so choose a other Rav for yourself in Passaic, there are many available.
November 18, 2014 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #10454031122334455ParticipantThank you everyone, especially enlightenedjew.
November 19, 2014 1:50 am at 1:50 am #1045404🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantspent shabbos in passaic. What a beautiful shul and a really nice community. I was especially impressed by two things:
there were two bar mitzvah boys so they shared the laining. One read three and one read four. Maftir was lained by one bar mitzvah and the aliya went to the other bar mitzvah. I don’t know if anyone in my hometown would consider sharing a bar mitzvah kiddush, let alone split the laining. And my brother said they sometimes have more than two sharing. The second thing was that there is a guy there who has taken upon himself, in the zchus of a refuah to a young boy, to fix tzitzis. He approaches people in shul whose knots are coming loose and offers to redo their tzitzis. They drop them off at his house and he does them there. way cool.
November 19, 2014 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #1045405enlightenedjewMemberSyag, I’m LOLing here – my brother had the same situation years ago and the laining was shared wholeheartedy.
Which shul did you go to for Shabbos davening?
thanks
