some liberal apikores nut (or is that the new n word) decided it’s his duty to put signs up everywhere denouncing the use of chickens for kaporos. he can take my chataim if he wants to replace the chicken.

Do you think he would taste like chicken?

Actually, while I don’t agree that using chickens is wrong, those chickens are abused.

What do you mean by abused, RebYidd? If it’s that the Kapparos ritual itself abusive (not too likely), I don’t agree; if it’s that the chickens are mistreated in the general process, I don’t think they all are – it’s each person’s responsibility to use a vendor who ensures that his birds are treated humanely.

I don’t think the reality that some vendors won’t do that, at least, not until you can’t get customers without it (unlikely scenario?), justifies banning or boycotting the use of chickens for Kapparos.

It is not right, however, to call someone who does not share that opinion an Apikores or a nut. Liberal does make sense, given the liberals’ favoring of animals’ physical interests over humans’

    religious ones.

    Least I have chicken.

It’s not the kapparos ritual itself. The chickens are stored in little boxes and neglected.

RebYid, would you recommend a Play-Pen for each one and a chickensitter?

I agree with rebyidd they are not treated humanely and if you dont thing being bound up and swung around in the air isn’t traumatizing have someone try that with you.

What I said stands, unless you mean that no vendors treat their chickens right. In that case, we’ll need to see sources that mandate a certain standard which Kapparos vendors never adhere to, AND evidence that that common chicken-handling practice is better. Otherwise, why pick on Kapparos?

A chicken deserves to have space to walk around and stretch its wings.

I’m pretty sure that most chickens being used for kapparos don’t have a chance to “spread their wings” on the chicken farms either. So it makes more sense to start where its year-round and not just a few days a year.

I heard one of the frum jewish junk newspapers had this flyer as an ad (but didnt see it myself).

What kinda idiot allows this into his paper? The only reason i can think of for letting it thru is just so that there can be hock in the letters to the editor. What a petty low way to run a newspaper.

“if you dont thinK being bound up and swung around in the air IS traumatizing have someone try that with you.”

Since never in the history of chicken waiving rituals (AFAIK) have those squaking balls of feather ever uploaded their birdseeds (thrown up) upon the sinner’s head (although I can’t say the same about the downloading), I say we can safely assume those chickies are not human, and therefore, human attributes should not be applied to them, nor shall we feel the need to take their fears, anxieties, or traumas into consideration, nor be made to feel guilty.

I personally don’t like it. It feels like tzaar baalei chayim to me, swinging terrified chickens around. I have always followed my father’s minahg of using money, and my husband is 100% on board with that. That said, I would not rpesume to dictate to others how they should shlug kaporos.

Yes, people should avoid the abuse of animals all the time. This does not mean that stacking chickens in tiny boxes is not abusive.

Saw that the editor of the paper wrote an apology in the letters section of the paper. Maybe that’s the main part of the paper takkah.
