On Labor Day I began to feel fluish. My fever spiked to 104 and I was taken to the ER. I have an infection in my soft tissue around my hip (I am recovering from hip and femur surgery). I endured days of unimaginable pain in the hospital. I am now at home with a PIC line and having to take three antibiotics, two intravenously. I cannot sit up for long periods and sleep most of the day. I am on Percocet and other pain killers and my stomach burns due to the antibiotics (yes, I am taking probiotics, They don’t work).
Please, I have seen miracles with tefilah. Please have in mind and daven for Yehudah Tzvi ben Elisheva.
Thank you.

September 19, 2011 10:54 pm at 10:54 pm #920005beyondpearlsParticipantI am davening for you to have a Refuah Shleima. I also want to share what I learned from a lot of personal trial and error with probiotics and stomach problems after antibiotics. (Of course, you should still continue whatever treatment your doctor has prescribed and consult with him before trying anything I am about to say here.) It is important to take a probiotic that is still potent and is delivered to the store or to your home refrigerated. There is a theory that it is just as important to take good probiotics as it is to take the antibiotics when treating invading bacteria. I buy from Natren because they are independently tested to maintain their strength all the way down, unlike the kind you get from the dry goods shelf. Natren’s number is 877-962-8736. they have phone staff who can advise you which variety you need and which ones are non dairy and veggie capped for kashrus. It is also helpful to minimize the amount of straight starch (grains, flour, potatoes, rice…) that you eat until your gut has healed. You can keep yourself nourished by eating mostly protein and non starchy vegetables, they can be cooked and blended into soup so it’s easier on your stomach. Be’ezras Hashem you should see some relief right away. You might also want to consult with a holistic nutritionist on how to build up your immune system. Saying “Asher Yotzar” with kavona that Hashem should heal your insides helps too.
You should have Hatzlocha Rabba!!

September 20, 2011 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #920011YehudahTzviParticipantDear fiends, thank you for the tefilos and good wishes. I ca sit up for just a few hours a day. I have basically become a recluse and haven’t seen or spoken to any of my friends since this happened. I am very weak, always tired and mostly, I am sad because Elul is coming and going and I don’t have the Koach or mental state to focus on Teshuvah. I feel as if the Sitra Achra has placed this mechitza between me and Hashem. I can’t even put on Tefillin because I have a PIC line on my left arm and haven’t been able to shower for weeks. I am sad and just want to sleep all the time, though I cannot. My narcotics make it worse. They take away my pain but make me foggy and sadder. I have had a terrible year with more tzaros than I care to recall. Now my Elul is being wasted. I am not looking forward to Yom HaDin.
September 20, 2011 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #920012am yisrael chaiParticipantYehudah Tzvi ben Elisheva, you are going through a tough time. No doubt about it. May you have a complete recovery soon.
“Now my Elul is being wasted.”
Is it possible that your current ?????? are helping cleanse the slates of many among us? That would certainly not be a waste.
“I feel as if the Sitra Achra has placed this mechitza between me and Hashem.”
The successful modus operandi of the sa is Depression. It is important to be aware of this and guard against it as much as possible.
You write that you are isolated and not experiencing friends’ support. These conditions can be precursors to depression. Can someone make a visiting schedule so that your friends can come on board and remove 1/60th?
Hashem only expects you to do what you can do under these difficult circumstances and nothing more. The hardest might probably be accepting the situation with a modicum of acceptance and blessing. Tough stuff.
You have a tremendous amount of support here from the CR.
May you have a complete ????? ????? ?? ????? soon.
September 20, 2011 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #920013charlie brownMemberYehudah Tzvi ben Elisheva,
I wish you a complete refuas hanefesh and refuas haguf, b’karov. I can only echo the sentiments of am yisrael chai which he expressed better than I can.
Hashem knows your situation and He knows that you cannot prepare for the Yom Hadin as you otherwise would. He will not hold it against you that you can’t focus on teshuva and that you are unable to wear tefillin. Machshava K’maaseh – He knows you want to do it, and would do it if you were able to, so He will certainly count it on the Yom Hadin as if you had done it. And IY”H the terrible yissurim you are going thru will wipe your slate clean and you will have an incredible year ahead with good health, happiness and parnassa and whatever else He knows you need. Tichle shana v’kileloseha v’sochil shana u’birchoseha (The past year should depart with its tzaros and the new year should begin with bracha)
Do you live in a large frum area? If so I urge you to call a friend for even a 5 minute chat or to call the local Bikur Cholim (if there is one) and request visitors. Even if you are only up to it for a short time daily, I think it will do wonders for your spirits which in turn can make the healing process run faster. Do you have family with you or are you completely alone?
I wish you all the best and please keep us posted.

SOOOOOOOOOO glad you are having a friend over. No more isolation for you, d’ya hear???
In fact, it might also be a good idea to call your rav to see if you can put tfillin on your right hand temporarily; there are poskim who hold like this in your type of situation.
And now you’ll have your rav on board as well!
Please just accept that your energy is on a temporary hiatus and will return shortly. Things usually move more smoothly when you accept it without fighting it, since fighting it in itself takes more energy.
You can even ask Hashem to help you accept this ????? and to be as positive as humanly possible. Easier said than done.

I’m sorry your friend couldn’t come, I hope he’ll be able to make it soon. Do you have any other local friends you may be able to invite? I’m glad you’re attempting a shower. The fact that you’re attempting to do something difficult shows that you are not in a depressed giving-up mode of thinking. Good for you! And if you do manage the shower, I’m sure that feeling fresh will further lift your spirits. If you can’t do it in the end, try again tomorrow!

September 22, 2011 4:37 am at 4:37 am #920023aries2756ParticipantYehudahTzvi, no one likes to be sick. It is a challenge for sure. While the medications work on one part of the body to heal, they usually effect another part and sometimes for a very good reason. Sleep is a very necessary part of healing. When you sleep or even rest your body regenerates itself and allows the healing to take place. But usually we only appreciate sleep when we are well, and get “restless” from rest and “tired” from sleep when we are ill. It is “boring” to be in the same room, in the same bed, with the same scenery, and the same complaints, with the same problems, and not having much change from day to day.
YT, I don’t know anyone who likes being on the receiving end, of course everyone wants to be on the giving end; being the ones who DO the Bikur Cholim, making the m’sheberachs, running the errands, etc. But accepting this challenge may just be your tafkid for Chodesh Elul. It might just be your job to allow others to get an extra mitzvah or two. So whether it is us here on the CR saying an extra kapital or two, or keeping you company, or your friends stopping by or calling you on the phone; or your wife coming in to check on you, or your mom, or kids or whomever are doing a little extra this month they are getting extra mitzvos through you. OK? So don’t say that Chodesh Elul is a waste. Every mitzvah counts whether it is yours or initiated through you.
In addition, you have a job to do and that is healing. You are no good to anyone else if you can’t help yourself. (that is what my Rav told me after one of my surgeries) So that is also your tafkid this month and that is to work on getting yourself healthy. If you fight the recovery process then you will never be up to par and ready to take over your tafkidim whether that is being an oveid Hashem in general, husband, father, son, earner, learner, friend, neighbor or whatever hats your head supports. So just as you reach for chizuk right here on the CR, accept the comfort your pillow offers, accept the relief the medication offers, accept the chizuk your tehillim offers even though it is NOT sitting on the top of your head or wound around your arm. There are things you can do, and there are things you just cant do for a little while. Just please, please keep in mind this is a temporary situation and for that you have to be grateful and show hakoros hatov. Unfortunately there are many, many people who are on the downturn and have to accept this as their judgment. But B”H for you this is a temporary condition that with time and tefillah will disappear.
If you could just try your best to clear your space from negativity and surround yourself with positive energy and simchas hachayim. Listen to the sounds of the Shofar. You can call your local Chabad and they will arrange for someone to come to the house to Blow Shofar. You can also call your local Yeshiva and they might be able to arrange that as well. You might even be able to arrange to have a minyan daven in the house for maariv at night so at least you can hear others daven. That might bring you some menuchas hanefesh. You would be surprised what you can do if you just think positively.
I apologize if I offended you in any way. I am truly trying to think of ways to lift your spirits and put you in the appropriate matzav for healing. Refuah Sheleimah.
September 22, 2011 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm #920024minyan galMemberYT, I hope that you are feeling stronger today. You said that you were going to attempt to take a shower. You should try to borrow a “bath” bench so that you can sit while you shower. It decreases your chances of becoming dizzy and falling. If you need to purchase one, they are relatively inexpensive. If you use a bench, you will also be more comfortable using a hand held shower head. They are easy to install (even I can do it, so it has to be easy) and very inexpensive. Then, you can sit and shower and rinse off. You should also have someone in the bathroom with you while you are showering…….just in case. Perhaps there is an agency where you are that can send a male orderly or health care aid to stand by. I suppose that your wife could assist you, but that depends on your size and her size. The last thing that you need is for her to be injured trying to prevent you from falling. I don’t mean to sound “preachy” but as an old nurse, I just want you be safe. If you can’t shower safely, don’t shower at all.
September 22, 2011 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #920025am yisrael chaiParticipantYehuda Tzvi Ben Elisheva, how are you doing today??
Did you call your rav regarding putting on tfillin on your right hand temporarily as long as you have the PIC line?
September 22, 2011 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm #920026YehudahTzviParticipantDear friends: Thanks for the support. I should have mentioned that this hospital stay was my 5th in two years. I have had four major surgeries, one of which was to debride a large portion of my underside after contracting sepsis in the hospital. I was 50/50 between life and death. That is why this quick onset of infection shocked me so much. I was feeling fine and it came on immediately and I was back in the hospital in excruciating pain.
I now carry the fear that this will happen to me repeatedly and it makes me very depressed. I had to cancel two potential parnassah meetings due to my lack of energy. I am trying to get into the Ellul frame of mind but it is impossible.
On the positive side, I did shower today! Minyan gal, I do indeed have a shower seat and have been using it for nearly two years. The major obstacle was covering my PICC line so it wouldn’t get wet. That could lead to another infection. Basically I am tethered twice a day to two intravenous antibiotics: vancomycin and one whose name escapes me. I know they are a positive thing, but I feel very trapped and hopeless. My wife administers the IV antibiotics in the morning and at night. My wife has become my caregiver and it is very stressful for her as well.
aries2756, you hit the nail on the head. I do need to clear out the negativity. It is just so hard. I am usually the joke teller, the comforter, the one helping others.
Anyhow, I am rambling… Thank you ALL for the kind words, encouragement, brachos and tefilos. With the help of G-d I will recover and move on. I will update you. Let me take this opportunity to beg for mechila if I have offended or hurt any of you in any of my posts. May you ALL be inscribed for a year of gezunt, refuah, parnassah, kalkalah, hatzlacha rabah, nachas and geulah!
September 23, 2011 2:59 am at 2:59 am #920027EzratHashemMemberDoes your local bikur cholim have a caregiver respite program? This could help your wife and alleviate stress. It certainly sounds like you could benefit from some extra help in the household.

September 23, 2011 3:14 am at 3:14 am #920029aries2756ParticipantOK, so just so YT, builds up his portfolio of jokes, lets all give him at least 5 laughs a day. OK, me first.
There was this pet store with a parrot in the window. One day this older woman passed on the opposite side of the street and the parrot called out “Hey lady, Hey lady” she was so surprised she crossed over and stood near the window closer to the Parrot who then said “you’re ugly”. The woman shook her head and walked away.
The woman took her daily walk and came upon the pet shop the next day and once again the parrot called out “hey lady, hey lady” and once again the curious lady crossed the street to get closer to the Parrot who said “your ugly”. The woman looked at the Parrot and shook her finger at it and walked away. But the same thing happened the next day. This time the woman told the Parrot if he did it one more time she would tell the owner of the shop and he would put a cover over the cage.
The woman was quite proud of herself. She walked quite happily down the street and stopped in front of the pet shop. She waited for the parrot to say something but he was quiet. She was quite smug and pointed her finger at the parrot and said “Do you have anything to say today?” The parrot didn’t miss a beat he said “You know!”.
I hope that put a smile on your face.
Refuah Sheleimah!
