Anyone have some ideas or tips, on how to keep healthy on the holidays, (especially since Rosh Hoshana, and Sukkot is coming soon)?
When it comes to food on these holidays, there are endless amounts of it, and so much cakes and other goodies. I try to fill up on water, salads/veges, and chicken/meat, so I wont be too hungry for the desserts, (or maybe have just a small amount of it).
For the fitness part of it, I have my in-laws, my parents, and my sister to go to for meals. So with all that walking, I’m getting a pretty good workout (not intentionally). Plus there’s running all over the house with my baby 😉
Your thoughts, questions, tips, advice, etc.?

I have been following – or at least attempting to follow the weight watchers program. I start off my meal with a fruit bowl filled with:
Romaine lettuce
Cucumber
String beans
some olives
pickle chips
sour pickles
sugar free cucumber salad
vadilia onion
a handful of baby carrots
celery
and what ever else sounds good
let the salad marinate in the bowl for a short while – all the juices add so much flavor that you do not need dressing.
After the salad, you will eat a small piece of chicken / meat for the protein and the side dishes for a treat.
Additionally, Mrs. mdlevine bakes whole wheat challahs or whole spelt challahs which digest better and are healthier (I can post the recipe if anyone is interested).

September 17, 2008 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #652578SJSinNYCMember1) Know your weaknesses – for me, its a bag of wafers. If I open it, I can easily finish it. So instead of trying to control myself, I avoid it. [disclaimer: dont avoid wafers just because I cant finish them] If you know you cannot avoid the temptation of the cakes and cookies, eat less at the meals. Yes your calories wont be as quality, but you wont be eating an extra 1,000 calories that day.
2) Avoid kugels – they hide plenty of eggs and oil in them.
3) Avoid having too much challah
4) Help out a lot in the kitchen – if you are cleaning up from a course or serving the next, you will have less time to be eating at the meal
5) Avoid caloric drinks like soda and juice. If you like carbonation, try seltzer
Good luck. Now if only I can practice what I preach here 😉

think about the damage you do to your body by eating indulgently, both short term (bloating, discomfort, stressing the digestive system) and long term (heart, arteries, diabetes)
think about the training in controlling your tayvahs you are providing yourself, and improvement in your Middahs in general
think that the food you were strong enough to avoid eating is a gift to Hashem.
think that you will continue eating like a Yid and not a Behemah for the days between R’H and Y’K.
think about these things before you eat, not after.
really stop for just a moment and think about it, right after HaMotzi

Delicious Vegetable Soup
One can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes, no sugar added
2 cans water (58 ounces)
three onions, cut up
4-6 stalks celery, cut up
3 beef or chicken boullion
1 bag (20 ounces) frozen carrots
1 bag (20 ounces) frozen string beans
1 bag (20 ounces) frozen cauliflower
1 large head of cabbage, cut up
combine all ingredients in a VERY LARGE pot. Season with your favorate seasonings. cook until celery is fork tender, about 1-1 1/2 hours. I like to take part of it and blend and then put back into pot. freezed well for succos too, enjoy!
Hey, how about low cal. section, YW??

Soup is a great diet aid, as long as it is not creamed or thickened with a starch. The idea of blending part and adding it back is a good one, it will thicken the soup to a creamier consistency. The addition of chicken pieces and/or giblets will make it heartier.
Steer clear of trying to be too great a “tzaddik” in eating challah and honey. A kazayis is enough (THAT is my personal Waterloo, that and my home-baked honey cake).

August 14, 2009 8:43 am at 8:43 am #652585Be HappyParticipantI don’t understand the difficulties. You can have a beautiful seudas YomTov with healthy foods! Who is talking about cakes?? What is so bad with vegtable salads/platters etc.
Have a bowl of fruit ready for your peckish moments. Better still check (e.g strawberries) and cut up fruit ready to eat.
Have a great holiday/ YomTov and stay Gezunt!
August 14, 2009 1:59 pm at 1:59 pm #652586feivelParticipantkeep in mind
everything you have a desire to eat, but forgo with the kavanah l’shaim Shamayim, to remain healthy to serve the Abishter, or to train yourself in separating from physical desire, burns up some of your fat instead and is considered in Shamayim to be a Korban l’ Hashem.
so bring Hashem Korbonos on Yom Tov
