There’s so much to do in preparing for yom tov. The problem is that many people have a house full of kids (either babies or older kids who are off from scholl). Anybody have any suggestions how to keep the kids out of the way?

A responsible adult (or husband if he is around and not needed inside the house) can take the kids out to the park to play, or out for pizza… or mayeb for the younger ones buy them new coloring books and have them kept busy with that or some other sort of activity

Perhaps the older kids can take the younger ones to the park or something…B’hatzlacha!

another idea is to give the kids small jobs to help out (possibly in a different room that you are in ;)). little ones love being able to be mommy’s little helper. it’s more of keeping them busy then the extra help- you just might have to go over what they did. what’s better is after you can tell everyone what a help they were and they will feel so good about themselves!

Dr. P, my 2 year old can vaccuum with the attachment. He loves to do it. Keeps him busy while I do something else nearby (I still have to do some afterwards, but he gets the large stuff and is entertained). He can also wipe things down with a rag or paper towel and unload the dishwasher (he can’t reach where high things go).

Gosh I sound like a slavedriver LOL.

Tell them that if they don’t stop bothering you, you’ll tie them to a tree in the forrest and let the bears eat them (I used this on two other posts, so I think I’m going to make this my mission statement 🙂

BP Totty- you said it so often, i might call the child abuse ppl after you!!!! ( I even have contact information- you are from BP, you are a totty, and you are from 11219!)

Yeah, but they’ll be looking for someone who is “never caustic” and in my non-CR life, I’m as caustic as Easy Off!

Besides, there are no forrests in BP, so the authorities will never find me! (oh and by the way, if you really want to know who I am…. ask Lois Lane!

Get the older ones to make a day camp for the younger, and pay them for it. (Even only $5)

It’s a bit late to tell you to pace yourself, but if you still have a lot of cooking to do, go for as simple as possible: buy some nice rice or other carb mixes, make a few dressings you can use on different salads, buy or doctor bought desserts, etc.

Re laundry: I don’t know how much space you have but if you have a secure area that the kids won’t demolish, sort clean laundry, hang whatever will go on hangers anyway, and don’t obsess over what doesn’t get put away.

Re cleaning: there’s dirt, and there’s clutter. A lot of what you clean at this point will stay somewhat clean. You can’t help the clutter but you can live with it.

When the kids reach a certain age, they can make paper chains. My kids loved taking them out front and seeing how far down the block it stretched. And we used to buy new music for the crunch time when they got a bit older than that.

If you can afford to pay for a mother’s helper for a few hours, it will be really worth it. If you can’t and really need help, call the principal of a local BY and find out if there is anyone who can do chesed. Don’t fret about being a chesed case; one day your kids will help someone else, iy”H.

Have a wonderful, happy yom tov!

Sometimes my younger kids clean surfaces with baby wipes. This is a great way for even very young children to help, since you don’t have to worry about them spilling buckets of water or spraying/ eating cleaning fluids.

Anon, we use a vinegar spray.

Dr. P – I assumed she wasn’t talking about the baby LOL.

Blinky, you’ve got to be kidding. But the fact that you don’t know who Lois Lane is only indicates how frum / temimusdik you really are (which is a good thing!) as opposed to us older folks who grew up on television and movies in our early days (but have since repented!)

In a nutshell, Lois knew (suspected?) the true indentity of Clark Kent / Superman (but you probably don’t know them either.. just as well I suppose!)

    #698720

hoe could lois POSSIBLY think clark and superman were the same. after all clark wore glasses

Either you’re in my age range (not a bad thing)or

you were exposed to TV / Movies at some point(and here I thought mods were Best BMG material).

My little kids love to help. So:

I bought an EMPTY plastic spray bottle and filled it with water! They spray the mirrors and walls and wherever mommy lets and then they wipe it all! Proud!

They also love to fold laundry. And you’ll be surprised how cute they fold everything. I let them sit on the bed and fold whatever they want while I’m busy in the kitchen.

(I redo everything later when they sleep :-))
