    motivation is the key.

If they see you learning, they are likely to learn from your example. Nagging for sure doesn’t work.

Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Shlita, said that he can learn for several hours, but if someone were to tell him to learn, he wouldn’t be able to learn for more than a few minutes.

Keeping the house distraction free (tv free, internet free, etc.) helps too. And sending them to the right schools (although which schools are the right schools depends on child and on family).

Also, I imagine that if they always hear you speaking positively and with admiration about our Gedolim, they are likely to want to be like them.

An almost impossible question to answer without knowing the age of the child. How to motivate a 6 year old will differ from a 9 year old, 12 year old and a teenager.

I don’t think we’re expecting a 6 year old to learn on his own time. I assume we are talking about teenagers.

Should younger kids be motivated to learn on there own time? Is it not enough what they do in school?

The parents must provide the example from the time the kids are young, so that it will make an impression that they will follow when they are older.

parents are role models from the minute their child is born & even before-to each other-your on a 24/7 job of being watched by your children & judged assuming the way you act is the right way for them to act & follow in.

Meno: and during the summer? My son was given “summer homework”, both Limudei Kodesh and limudei chol. Total time per day was around 10 minutes.

iacisrmma: if it’s homework, it’s not called learning on your own.
