My family is very into English names because my mom grew up with her whole family called only by their English names. My dad’s side is all Hebrew names so we compromised. While I’m technically called by my Hebrew name, until this year I was basically called 50/50 by my Hebrew and English names as my Hebrew name is difficult for Americans to pronounce. (I love Israel! Everyone can pronounce my name!) One sister with a similarly annoying name is also basically called 50/50, a third sister has only one name because it’s a very typical name, and my brother has a really random English name that nobody uses (his Hebrew name was after somebody but his English name was after somebody else- it went out of fashion about thirty years ago).

My dad works with a lot of Indian people and while most of them do go by their regular (unusual, long, and ethnic) names legally, 99% of them go by nicknames IRL (Saravanakumar is Sar, for example). The Jewish people all go by English names, though.

I would go totally by my Hebrew name if it were less prone to mangling by the average American. (If I move to Israel though… Reason #23047.)

The 2nd post in this thread was:

Shira to Shira Princess of Power

In the 4 years since then, I wonder how many have gotten that.

Hi, (shake, thump)- I’m I Will Open with a Harp. Nice to meet y’all! And you are…?

    #1034331

Eftach bhinor means that (I think). ‘evtachbchinor’ means I trust my harp /violin / lyre.

LF is correct. It’s not too late to start over, “evtach” – you’ve only posted about 7 times.

    #1034333

Sorry- thanks LF and Randomex for your constructive criticism. How can I change my name, then, to eftach bchinor? Because that’s what I really meant. Anyways, Randomex, you’re right. It’s never too late to start over, especially this time of year, and maybe a name change will change my mazal (not sure if that’s good or bad…) And I’m just a little creeped out knowing that you’re keeping track of my humble eight postings…

I was thinking that you could create a new account with that name, but then I realized – you can ask a mod to change your name.

Make a new post in this thread and put “for mod read only” at the top. Ask that they change your name because of the mistake. If they won’t do it, you can make a new account.

As for keeping track of your posts, you’re new here and don’t know the ropes yet. Click on (almost) any user’s name next to any of their posts, and you’ll see a page with some information about them, if they’ve chosen to put it in, and 2 lists: 1 of all the threads they’ve posted in, and another of all the threads they’ve started.

There are a few posters whose names link to something else – you just need to get a profile URL and type their name instead of the other user.

Also, if there is a space in the user’s name, clicking on their name will take you to an error page – manually replace the spaces in their name in the page URL with dashes (-) to see their profile.

Thank you for taking a Randomex Crash Course!

You can find more helpful material in the “stickied” threads at the top of the Coffee Room and in this thread (and the links there):

I only have a Hebrew name and it has a ch in it. I have been to the doctors office where they called it with a j. 🙂 I should probably go by my middle name which is way easier to pronounce. 😉

I once had to go for a test at a hospital I didn’t ordinarly frequent. The waiting room was quite crowded. Many of the women there were Polish. When the person who had been calling people out of the waiting room went out to lunch, her replacement couldn’t pronounce the Polish names. Those poor Polish women didn’t recognize their names the way she pronounced them, so she would spell them, but that really didn’t help. Luckily I used to speak a little Polish, so at least I was able to pronounce the names. She would mangle it, I would pronounce it correctly, the Polish woman would thank me and everything else proceeded as it should.

So should someone named Malka introduce herself as Queen?

My mother told me that when she was younger she knew a couple people named Queen Esther. There are still people around with that name. Look in any big city phone book.

Randomex – about your previous post (and since you seem to know your way around the CR better than most:) ) how can i access a profile if it says “user not found” and what does this mean? Also, I know I might come across as slow – and for the record, I am usually great at figuring out abbreviations, so this is quite embarrassing – but what does URL stand for?

And thank you for the positive feedback! B’li neder,

thread on the subject (feedback) coming soon!

Shira Princess of Power explanation: “She-Ra: Princess of Power” was a children’s cartoon in the ’80s.

(While cozimjewish won’t need the content below, it may be useful to CR archaeologists in the future.)

“user not found” is the error page referred to in “clicking on their name will take you to an error page”.

    The thread about feedback:

I assumed you’d gotten the error information already in the “markups” thread, though I suppose you wouldn’t necessarily have remembered and identified the “Chesed” thread as the “thread on the subject of feedback” announced here. But that didn’t seem important.
