This burning question has been troubling me for a long time (so now you know…)

They didn’t want to name it the Alligator because it isn’t one.
(Assumption) They didn’t want to call it a chat room because that had a bad connotation in the early internet age and that bad connotation seemed to have persisted in the Frum community. (Even though chat rooms really ceased to exist by the time the CR was founded; this would more properly be described as a message board; which pretty much entirely replaced chat rooms by the early 2000s precisely because of the reasons that chat rooms had bad reputations.)
We are all part of an ancient organization that used to meet in a coffee room (before the internet) to discuss various notable stories of the day…

This is “Yeshiva” World. Yeshivos have coffee rooms, where guys, besides drinking coffee, shmooze.

to add to your point yeshivas have trolls too, and some joseph’s
they needed a name where burning jewish discussion were held traditionally.
from all entries, they voted for coffee room
the other options were:
– back bench (in shul)
– the mik (mikvah)
– the poolish
– yentehsite
and
– around the bimah
It should be called the “Kiddush Club Room”.
It was named after its zeyde.
Because everyone drinks coffee when they talk about nothing important
