I’m starting high school on Sep. 7th. I’m really nervous because everyone tells me how hard it is and some people tell me how easy it is. Can you tell me what to watch out for and what to prepare for cuz i have no clue what to expect!
August 16, 2011 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #802246bptParticipantThings to watch out for:
* The tznius patrol
* Your cell phone not set to mute
* Talking about your “amazing” day off (when you called in sick)
Things to expect:
* Scare tactics related to seminary
* Scare tactics related to shidduchim
* Scare tactics related to seminary (they focus on that alot)
Oh, and they may give homework from time to time. Other than that, its just like elementary school, only a different uniform.
August 16, 2011 10:41 pm at 10:41 pm #802247brotherofursParticipantwell 9th grade was the hardest year of my life- i think. But it really all depends.
if ur like gong with a lot of your friends then it’ll probably be easier, and it depends how hard the school is, {in studies}.. but really it was also a great year of my life because u really end up learning stuff you’ll need for life and you can get closer relationships with teachers, and decide how you want to become..
(this is how it was for me but it might be different) give us more details , what r u scared of?
Its a lot of fun! dont worry 🙂
August 16, 2011 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #802248taking a breakMemberBPT- LOL. you forgot to mention the bathroom monitor and the davening teacher 🙂
i used to think HS was the hardest thing till i went to sem. then i thought sem was the hardest thing till i got to college. HS seems hard and scary and frightening and HELP WHAT do i do now!!! all these feelings are NORMAL. some teachers are hard and some are easy. some have straight foward tests and some you have to think 180 degrees backwards. just think of HS as elementary, just bigger. on a more serious note, develop a connection to teachers, limudei kodesh and limudei chol. they have lots to teach and give over. your school prob has a michaneches designated for the school or just for your grade. if you have any issues, talk to her. she’s there to help
and dont forget, have fun in school. its not the grades that count. make friends and connections. and most of all, may you have lots of siyatta dishmaya in HS in the next 4 years. HATZLACHA
August 16, 2011 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #802249bygirl93Memberhigh school- sounds scary but its really not that bad- u just might actually have to study once in a while- it might take some time to adjust but you get used to it eventually- if you are going with friends thats good but make sure to give them some space to grow and give you a chance to make more friends!!! bpt is right though they do focuse on seminary- and i will say this once DO NOT WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF 11TH GRADE AND REALIZE YOU ARE NOT GETTING INTO SEM BECAUSE IN 9TH AND 10TH YOUR GRADES WERE HORRIBLE!- sry i just had to stress that enough because it happened to me and some of my friends- bH the sem i was planning to apply doesnt really focus on grades so much but unfortunatley in my friends case that wasn’t so- so for the last half of 11th grade and the whole 12th grade she was killing herself to get perfect scores- her sat was almost perfect- she was smart she just didnt apply herself in 9th and 10th- they realized tht and accepted her only after she promised she would really apply herself in sem- otherwise she can find someplace else- and she is a really great girl!!!! so that is my advice for high school- yes high school is full of fun and activities and achdus and chesed oppurtunities (sry for the spelling) but dont forget the school part- dont kill yourself for it but remeber its there- and most of all go in with a positive attitude!! if you go in with a positive attitude you will come out with one!!
August 16, 2011 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #802250Queen BeeMemberamazingirl97, I hope your high school years will be MUCH better than mine. Good luck and I wish you the best!
August 17, 2011 12:19 am at 12:19 am #802251ItcheSrulikMemberI second bpt. On a serious note, if you find yourself alternating between tears and gales of laughter when your teacher tries to talk hashkafa/machshava, be aware that they aren’t all there is to the subject.
August 17, 2011 12:21 am at 12:21 am #802252yummy cupcakeMemberpeople take high school way too seriously. amazingirl97, everyone goes through high school, and lives to tell the story (B”H). you will be fine! just be a good student, listen in class, take notes, study, and you will do great! and by my first line, i did not mean to advise you not to take school seriously, i just meant to chill, because its not as bad as people make it sound. it’s actually an amazing experience and high school is the place where so much of your growth takes place. so cherish every moment!
August 17, 2011 2:09 am at 2:09 am #802253amazingirl97ParticipantThanx guys so much! your so helpful! i’ll make sure 2 keep these gr8 tips in mind!
August 17, 2011 2:22 am at 2:22 am #802254emlfMemberAlso important – as with everything in life – take it a bit at a time.
In 10th grade, we took 3 Regents exams – 2 in one day, 1 the next day. Yes, it was difficult – but boruch HaShem, we got through it. If you start thinking now about all the pressures, you’ll get too nervous.
If you’re at all able – try to review your notes from time to time, particularly notes from classes where the teacher doesn’t give many tests. That way, come midterm and final time, you’ll be a little more familiar with the material.
Good note-taking skills are important. Get advice, a book on the subject . . . If you find a teacher you like, maybe ask the teacher to give some points about note-taking. The whole class would benefit.
Get involved in school life – be a part of it. Be part of play, activities, etc. Beneficial in more than one way.
Hatzlocha.
August 17, 2011 2:36 am at 2:36 am #802256Bar ShattyaMemberI dispute that it is feasible to discuss “high school” It is much more proper to discuss a specific one. I thought for four years that I had a clue what high school was until I spent some time in the proximity of a different high school. It blew my mind. What I thought was “high school” was in reality just my high school.
Bottom line- If you are not ENJOYING the experience, you are in a place thats not for you. there may not be anywhere a place for you, but you should enjoy what you do
August 17, 2011 2:38 am at 2:38 am #802257popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy is bar shattya posting serious posts?
(But, I totally agree with him. After all, he is not a stupid girl who kills herself in high school for no reason.)
August 17, 2011 2:49 am at 2:49 am #802258Queen BeeMemberI believe a girl (or guy) should strive to do well in school (and other areas in life) for herself (or himself) and not to impress anyone else.
August 17, 2011 2:55 am at 2:55 am #802259amazingirl97ParticipantThank you queen bee for encouraging me with your kind words. popa im not trying to kill myself in high school to get good marks. i try my best and since i’m not such a good student, i try my hardest and i’m happy with what i get. i really don’t care unless i fail. if i do then i care.
August 17, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #802260Bar ShattyaMembermost guys are impressed by NOT doing well in school. didny you ever watch the simpsons? uch you people are such boors
August 17, 2011 3:27 am at 3:27 am #802261kylbdnrMemberI worked hard in high school so I can get into a good college- not seminary. 9th grade was hardest because meeting new friends, diff school etc.
I heard my high school that I was in just put up video cameras in all the classes….even the bathroom so girls shouldn’t stand and talk there.
August 17, 2011 5:24 am at 5:24 am #802262cofeefanMemberjust remember that grades are not the most important thing!! no one really cares what if you get 100s or 90s or 80s…. try your best, have fun, and learn the important lessons in life…. the ones that will make you a better person in the real world…
August 17, 2011 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #802263amazingirl97ParticipantThank you coffeefan! that’s what i really plan on doing. i want to get into a good college and seminary but i’m not gonna work my brains out to get 100s every time. i could still get into a good college or sem without going crazy
August 18, 2011 1:24 am at 1:24 am #802264aries2756ParticipantThe scariest thing about High School is that you are NOT at the top of the ladder and YOU are NOT the cool ones or the important ones. YOU are now at the bottom of the wrung. YOU are newbies coming in wet behind the ears. You are the freshies and the lowest of the low and everyone will make sure you know it. That is the hardest thing about your first year in High School. The idea is to knock the “I’m great, I’m grand, I am a graduate” out of your head. As you enter High School you are a nobody just learning the ropes.
Where you might have had 5 or 6 classes a day in elementary school you will have 10 classes or periods in one day in High School. Yes you will have more classes and more teachers than you can count and remember. And yes, they each think they are the only ones. It is up to you to step up to the plate and do your best. You have to get into the swing of things quickly without whining and kvetching about it. Everyone pays their dues and goes through it. Just do your best to get into the swing of things and get your work done. If you don’t know what you are doing ask someone for help so you catch up quickly. Don’t fall behind at the beginning or you will be in big trouble quickly. Don’t show off, yet don’t be shy. Be confident but don’t be bratty and show off because they will zoom in on you and try to trip you up.
Also in many High Schools the Teacher doesn’t change rooms the students do. So have funny running up and down the stairs in less than 4 minutes between classes.
August 18, 2011 2:56 am at 2:56 am #802265brotherofursParticipantwow aries you make it sound so bad!!;) come on theres more good stuff than bad, :).. i gess i had to go through all that stuff 2 [except my school’s one floor , so no stairs ;)]
August 18, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #802266amazingirl97Participantoh wow your very lucky!!!!
August 18, 2011 3:36 am at 3:36 am #802267mustangriderMemberamazing – my one and only piece of advice is:
REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN! even when your studying for a crazy midterm or working on an impossible report. my favorite memories were – surprisingly – from all those late nites i was ready to rip my hair out! and how is that possible you may ask?! because i made sure to include moments where i just lightened up and laughed with my friends – over the phone or in person. i still remember chemistry because i stayed up for three hours on the phone with one of my best friends studying in different accents! it was a real laugh fest!
August 18, 2011 4:12 am at 4:12 am #802268aries2756ParticipantHey brother, I didn’t say that there is no good stuff in High School, it is probably the best time of your youth and you will make memories you will remember your entire life. You will learn more in High School than any other time frame in your life. Things that will stick with you forever.
I was just explaining the scary stuff. That is the scary stuff, know its coming, that is what it is, get it out of the way and then get on with it.
August 18, 2011 4:34 am at 4:34 am #802269frumster22Memberamazinggirl97…..you dont have to worry about anything in high school as long as you dont take it seriously its a joke in our circles anyways
