I’m just getting over a viral bronchitis and I caught a stomach virus or the flu around 2 days ago. I have fever (about 101) and I’m throwing up… the works! I haven’t eaten anything in 48 hours!! The only thing I did was ATTEMPT to drink! My question is what do I do about Yom Kippur? If I’m not feeling good enough to eat tomorrow and then fell better on Shabbos I will be starving…
also what if I’m not feeling well on Yom Kippur – can I drink shiurim? (I’m scared of dehydration)
Thanks everyone!

In any case, refua shlaima!
October 7, 2011 2:42 am at 2:42 am #815939deiyezoogerMemberOf course you should ask a rav and doctor but IV is something to look into.
October 7, 2011 2:42 am at 2:42 am #815940always runs with scissors fastParticipantyou really should ask your local orthodox rav. This could be a serious matter and you trying to be a martyer by fasting when seriously ill is not required of you. However, only a rav can determine if you can and should be drinking and eating as this is a seriously holy day. Refuah shalaymah, and please post your name as we can daven for you.. Right now you could take in a warm salty chicken soup and take a ginger capsule to settle your stomache.
October 7, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #815941supergirl613Memberask your doctor, he’ll tell you what to do.
October 7, 2011 2:47 am at 2:47 am #815942kapustaParticipantAsk a Rav what to do about fasting.
For now, have chicken soup (liquid only) so you can get something other than pure water into your system.
Refuah Shelaima
Have an easy fast!
October 7, 2011 2:49 am at 2:49 am #815943BaalHaboozeParticipantif you will have to fast, maybe consider taking these time-release pills (like Kali-Tzom) to ease the hunger pains.
refuah shelayma and a gut gebenched yur!
October 7, 2011 2:50 am at 2:50 am #815944yitayningwutParticipantAsk your doctor, and then present your rabbi with your doctor’s opinion and ask him what to do.
October 7, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #815945HermioneMemberThanks for all the feedback!! Of course I will ask my Rav but I’m curious to hear what other people have to say…
Always: thanks for offering to daven for me but I don’t feel comfortable posting my name… Just think of me and have me in mind!! Also what is a Ginger capsule?
October 7, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #815946aries2756ParticipantIf you know someone in Hatzolah maybe you can call them and have them come over to check you for dehydration. They should know the signs. If you are dehydrated, they can take you to the hospital tonight to get rehydrated. Even if you have to drink on Yom Kippur you will still feel better and possibly be able to go to shul and daven. The problem is, if you are dehydrated and you don’t get help tonight, you can be sick on Yom Tov and that will cause you and your family more complications.

October 7, 2011 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #815948HermioneMemberHey all,
I wanted to tell you that I got a heter to drink shiurim being that I still have fever this morning (B”H feeling better but still feverish) and it’s dangerous to fast… I’m also not supposed to go to shul… So have me in mind…!! I wanted to wish everyone a g’mar chasima tova and a gut gebensht yar. Everyones tefillos should be answered and everybody should have an easy fast.
Thanks again for all the replies!

Please bear in mind that its probably better to sleep all Yom Kippur and not break the fast, than to break the fast and go to shul.
October 7, 2011 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #815950HealthParticipantHermione -Right now (the whole day) you should drink a few bottles of Pedialyte. If you’re feeling better by tonite you can fast. If not continue with the small amounts of Pedialyte. If you vomit up the liquid Pedialyte start with the frozen Pedialyte. Don’t eat solids until your stomach is settled usually after it stops (N/V/D) about 24 hours.
PS. – My free medical Chessed for Erev Yom Kippur.
October 9, 2011 6:12 am at 6:12 am #815951am yisrael chaiParticipantHermione,
Whatever happened?
October 9, 2011 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #815952always runs with scissors fastParticipantyeah, we’re all wondering.
October 10, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #815953HermioneMemberSorry so late…! i went Succah shopping today…
we anyway – I didn’t break my fast because I felt guilty but I threw up straight from 7 A.M. till 12 in the after noon with fever n’ all and then at about 3 the whole thing passed and I was able to go to mincha and neilah. Aside from the fact that I felt really hollow being that I hadnt eaten in 3 days from 3 P.M. and on I felt like it was a regular fast.
