We heard Camp Sternberg is closing. I know that rumor goes around every year, but a call to the Camp office verified that it is a distinct possibility. Applications are not being been sent out from the camp office and staff there are not sure what will be with the camp (new owner bought the camp last year). We have been a Sternberg family for 8 years (2 girls, one still of camp age) and I was a counselor there. We would hate to see this wonderful camp close.
Is there any thing that can be done to prevent this? Anyone have a good idea? If you are a Sternberg family, call the camp office. Perhaps if we bombard the office with calls the new owner will re-consider and open it up.
October 8, 2010 2:27 am at 2:27 am #862498jb48MemberWhoa. Don’t get worried. It’s highly unlikely that camp is closing. They would have told the staff and they haven’t. The new owners put a lot of money into the camp to enhance it, not to close it down. Each division was privileged to have new additions added – water park – paddle boats – kayaks – game room – water slide – rock climbing wall – aviary – etc. No one pours money into a camp like that if the intention was to close it down. Summer 2010 was fantastic and 2011 will be even better. It’s entirely possible that the office will have a new location and the applications will be sent from there. I would sit tight and keep your eyes open. I’m sure now that the yomim tovim are over there will be ads in the paper, and probably you will get your applications in the mail shortly.
October 8, 2010 2:39 am at 2:39 am #862499Pashuteh YidMemberIt is a wonderful camp. We have not heard anything about it closing. We saw an ad in one of the Jewish newspapers recently saying nothing you have liked about it over the years will change, and only improvements will be made, such as the new water activities they added this past summer.
October 8, 2010 3:16 am at 3:16 am #862500mischiefmakerMemberI didn’t go there but I know many girls who did and none of them said its closing. They all said they’re going back. I think everyone would’ve known about it if it was really closing.

October 8, 2010 5:36 am at 5:36 am #862502nachasMemberI know one of the higher ups and they said that they will be opening this year.
October 10, 2010 12:36 am at 12:36 am #862503Out of Town ImaMemberI am well aware of the virtues of the camp (we have been a Sternberg family for years) and agree that, after putting a lot of money into it, it seems illogical to close it down. Nevertheless, the camp office is telling people that they are not the camp office anymore and they are unsure what will be happening with the camp. Our daughter in Eretz Yisrael was told that a girl who called to get a “sup” (Sternberg families understand what that is) application was told the camp is not opening. Granted, these rumors all may turn out to be false, BUT any concrete information from people who actually know the real owner would be helpful. To that end:
Chanie — How do you know applications will be mailed in November? We surely hope you are correct!
October 10, 2010 1:22 am at 1:22 am #862504no it allMemberCAMPS HELLER MOGEN AV AND STENBERG WERE SOLD ON AUGUST 30 2010 THAT HOW RUMOR STARTED THAT IT WAS CLOSING DOWN BUT THOSE RUMORS ARE FALSE AND IN FACT THEY ALREADY STARTED ADVERTISING FOR THIS UPCOMING SUMMER THE NEW OWNER ALREADY PUT IN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS INTO THE CAMPS
EVERTHING U LIKE ABOUT THE CAMP WILL BE THE SAME IF NOT BETTER THAT INCLUDES THE HEAD STAFF THE NEW OWNERS BOUGHT THE CAMP AND THE NAMES THE APPLICATION HAVE NOT GONE OUT YET BECAUSE THERE IS STUFF THAT TO BE FINALIZED FOR THEY SEND IT OUT
DO NOT WORRY
ANYMORE Q PLEASE FEEL FREE TO RIGHT BACK HATZLOCHA RABBA

THEY ARE NOT THAT CAMP OFFICE ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY SOLD THE CAMP!! THEY REASON WHY THEY EVEN THERE IS BECAUSE YOU CANT JUST SELL A CAMP AND THAT IT THE TRANSFORMATION TAKES TIME
AFTER THE SALE THEY HAD TO SEND OUT PAYCHECKS ETC… THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE
YOU MUST HOLD ON TIGHT AS I MENTION IN EARLIER POST THAT STARTED ADVERTISING ( YOU PROB DID NOT SEE THAT BECAUSE YOU OUT OF TOWN)
I CAN SAY THAT I KNOW FOR SURE THAT THEY ARE RE-OPENING
October 10, 2010 2:52 am at 2:52 am #862506Out of Town ImaMemberThank you for your post. In fact, we get all relevant newspapers and have seen the ad, but no contact information was included. It is good to know that the Sternberg tradition will live on.
One suggestion. The new owner should make it well known that the camp is opening and that applications will be mailed next month. Perhaps update the website (which tells you to call the old camp office), etc. I know many girls who are making arrangements already for other camps, and Sternberg can ill afford to lose any more campers.
Have a gut voch and thanks for the info.
October 10, 2010 3:10 am at 3:10 am #862507mw13ParticipantI too have heard from well-placed sources that although Sternberg/Mogeb Av/Heller are under new ownership, they will remain under their respective head counselors and head staff. In other words, there is a new owner, but the same people will be running the same camps.
October 27, 2010 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #862508Pashuteh YidMemberAny more info on the camp? The rumors are continuing to swirl, including that it was bought by a non-Jew.
November 12, 2010 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #862510WolfishMusingsParticipantI just received an email from them with their new website and registration information for next summer. So, I’d say that Sternberg (and Mogen Av, Heller, etc.) are all going to be open next year.
If it’s okay with the mods, I’ll post a link to the new website.

Go ahead

November 14, 2010 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #862513aries2756ParticipantWho said it was bought by a non-religous Jew? Where did you get that information from?
Sternberg, Mogen Av and Heller will be open and in full swing. My son is doing the ad campaign for them. Don’t worry 2011 will be bigger and better than ever.!
November 15, 2010 4:23 am at 4:23 am #862514no it allMemberaries2756 “Who said it was bought by a non-religous Jew? Where did you get that information from”
i will say it like this camps mogen av sternberg and heller were bought this past august by a non religious Jew, (name withheld)
he basically only employs frum yiden to run his camps ( he owns a bunch other)
this man has barely any direct contact with the camps he owns
that is what he has the frum yiden for
in our case the very nice man in charge of these three camps is an chassidisha yid who lives in woodmere.
and if you go to the website you will find out more info about this upcoming year http://shmacamps.org/
but basically camp is going to be the same as always and even better with the new owner improving the grounds in all three camps
so do not delay sign up now for an early bird special
aries2756 the reason why your son does not even know that the camp is owned by a non frum yid is because all of his employees are frum so he never came in contact with the real owner
