I unfortunately notice all too many times (even once is too many) folks expressing what can only colloquially be termed “Hashkofos HaTelevision”, where otherwise good-meaning folks express views contrary to the Torah yet miserably attempt to wrap up their ideas in a so-called Torah setting. It is abundantly clear to anyone with a Torah-true background that the views they express are clearly stemming from “modern culture” and contemporary Western values rather than from the Torah. You hear this kind of attitude both here on this forum as well as in conversations during the course of one’s day.
I just wanted to point this out.

the problem you describe is THE nisoyin of our times, before Moshiach. we all are under the influence of the winds of the goyim that wave us like stalks of grain. it takes work to perceive it for what it is, and its not easy. the yetzer ha’rah spins webs of illusion and deceit that appear to be real, this has always been his main weapon. sometimes he even comes with rabbinic degrees.
we have to work on ourselves by learning works of Mussar and through strengthening our Tefillah.

September 20, 2011 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #811421apushatayidParticipantNeither is all chewing gum. What is your point?
September 20, 2011 11:31 pm at 11:31 pm #811422chaimssParticipantThe point is that we shouldn’t be chewing the non-Kosher gum. We shouldn’t be taking goyishe hashkafos that have no place in Torah and try to bring Torah into them. I will go out on a limb and say that maybe here and there there are things that do “shtim” with Torah Hashkofa, but perhaps that’s not for us to decide.
September 21, 2011 12:17 pm at 12:17 pm #811423shmoelMemberMy point was addressed to those who think we should respect all hashkafas.
September 21, 2011 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm #811424makMemberAll PEOPLE should be respected, all HASHKAFOS should not. The hashkafos that are emes are those that come from Torah and only Torah.
September 21, 2011 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #811425Sam2ParticipantI don’t even know what Hashkafa means.

basically what he is saying:
there is a lot of influence of goyish values from living in a goyish world and being inundated by their media that all of us, to varying extents, have internalized it and confused it with Torah values. he was lamenting this fact.
to mr kaufman: the issue he was referring to, of the highly unfortunate and rampant internalization and admixture into our Torah values of goyish values, has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue of Mitzvahs and Takanahs that our Sages have instituted.
