Hi Dad,
I know you’re around here somewhere I just can’t figure out your screen name.
When we were younger, I would anxiously await for you to come home from work.
When you finally came home you would pick me up, hug me and hold me high in the “sky”.
I loved those moments, I’d close my eyes and I think that I was floating in the clouds.
I thought you were the tallest, strongest person in the world.
I’d open my eyes, look down at the furniture far below and wish I could stay there forever.
After you’d put me down I would dream about the day that I would be as tall as you so that I would always feel as if I was in the “sky”.
As the years went by I got bigger and taller and sadly realized that I will never “walk in the sky”.
But now when I come home I anxiously wait for my kids to come running to me. I pick them up, hug them and hold them high in the sky. I close my eyes and there I am- floating in the clouds once again.
I’m sure they think that I am the tallest, strongest person in the world- what kid doesn’t feel that way about their father?
I now realize that you aren’t the tallest, strongest person in the world, but I still think that you are the smartest person in the world.
Dad-
I hope I turned into the person (and father) you dreamed I would. I’ll do whatever I could to pass that hard work down to your grandchildren.
Thanks again for everything.
Happy Fathers Day

Obama is not going to abolish the holiday this year because it discriminates against the many fatherless families who supported him, and the many ACORN led absentee fathers who voted for him twice?
June 17, 2009 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #686574WolfishMusingsParticipantDr. Pepper,
A beautiful statement of love for your father. Thank you for sharing.
Bear,
Please don’t ruin such nice thoughts with cheap political pot-shots.

June 18, 2009 1:28 am at 1:28 am #686575shaatraMemberDr. Pepper that was truly beautiful!! It sounded like my house, when my father comes home, ALL the kids go running to give him a hug and kiss. Now that I’m thinking about it, its such a special moment.
I love my daddy 🙂

June 18, 2009 7:36 am at 7:36 am #686584mamashtakahMemberEvery year my kids ask me what I want for Father’s day, and I always tell them the same thing – kids who listen the very first time, all the time. Still waiting for that to happen . . . sigh.
Since there’s no Father’s Day here (E”Y) let’s see if they remember it this Sunday.
My kids’ former school has had a blood drive every Father’s Day for the past 11 years or so, which was a great way for me to honor my Dad – he donated over 10 gallons of blood to the Red Cross during his working years.
June 18, 2009 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #686585oomisParticipantDr. Pepper,
That was such a beautiful and moving tribute to your dad. I am sure he felt the same way every time he held you high in the sky, and I bet he feels that way with your own children. You made me cry, after the fun word thread that made me laugh. Today has been a real roller coaster of emotion.
I wish my father were still here so I could tell him that it took me all these years to understand what a truly incredible gift the father that I had, was. Not that I didn’t appreciate him, as kids do when I was growing up, mind you, but it is first now when there are certain things that I do for my own children, (maybe ferrying them to an appointment or to catch a train, when I am dog-tired and really just want to sleep a little later, or babysitting when I already have had an incredibly busy day and just wanted to veg out finally, etc. etc.), that I truly GET what it meant for my dad O”H to do those things for me when he was far more exhausted than I could ever be in ten lifetimes. He never once turned me down, and never complained, and I am truly humbled by that thought. For me, every day is father’s day. I am just not one of the ones lucky enough to be able to him how much I love him (and my mom O”H, too). So if your parents are still alive and well kinehora, pick up the phone RIGHT NOW and tell them how you feel about them.
June 19, 2009 12:09 am at 12:09 am #686586shaatraMemberThat was beautiful oomis
June 19, 2009 1:14 am at 1:14 am #686587JaxMemberoomis1105: that was such a nice peice! i bet your dad & mom are proud looking down!
June 19, 2009 2:13 am at 2:13 am #686588an open bookParticipantreal nice, ames 😉 i sympathize with your kids on the “embarrassing them” plan.
but fyi, your plans don’t guarantee anything. my father always made (still does, actually) me give him hugs & kisses & stuff, so i do, but i still would never voluntarily go over & do that because i know they would think i’m sick or something – i’m just known for hating anything like that since forever & nobody expects me to – so i don’t.
June 19, 2009 2:23 am at 2:23 am #686589anon for thisParticipantames, when your mother only says “thank you” in response to a beautiful card, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate it. You don’t know how much it probably means to her (I’d guess she still keeps that card in a safe place), even though she may not express it well. And telling her how you feel, whether in a card or face-to-face, is important for yourself as well.
June 19, 2009 3:01 am at 3:01 am #686590ambushParticipantwow!
we got some really amazing pieces over here…
just remember… EVERY DAY is fathers day!
June 19, 2009 3:35 am at 3:35 am #686591shaatraMemberAmes:I wouldn’t be embarrassed if my parents gave me hugs and kisses in front of my friends, not at all, I’m happy that they do. Shows I have parents who love me. And if ur kids make a big deal about it it means they really love when u do that. So keep doing it. No one will make fun, or be embarrassed.
June 19, 2009 11:25 am at 11:25 am #686592I can only tryMemberDr. Pepper-
Very nice thread. If your father isn’t the type to go online you can always print and present it.
oomis1105-
Your post reminds me of a Readers Digest article from 25 – 30 years ago titled “Daddy Doll Under the Bed” written by the late Erma Bombeck.
June 19, 2009 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #686593gavra_at_workParticipantAmbush:
I’ve heard that the reason why the Torah did not tell us the exact day of Matan Torah is so that people should not think that the day of its giving is the only day it needs to be studied, supported, loved & kept. None the less, we still celebrate Shavuos as the day of giving of the Torah. A similar idea applies to Mothers & Fathers day, where there is no “set” day written, but its good idea to have a day to celebrate.
