I haven’t seen 3D printing mentioned anywhere here, so I’ll start. What halachos are related to 3D printing? Am I allowed to scan, shrink and print a copy of myself or is that a statue? How about a lithograph?
July 24, 2014 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #1024391ED IT ORParticipantI love 3d printing.
Step 1: Buy a 3d Printer
Step 2: Print a 3d printer
Step 4: Return original 3d Printer

July 24, 2014 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1024393Sam2ParticipantI would assume that 3D printing a human being is an Issur D’oraisa unless you use whatever Limud Zchus we have to allow dolls.
July 24, 2014 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm #1024394HaLeiViParticipantThis is worse becuase you don’t have the Hetter of Acheirim Osin Lo.
July 24, 2014 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1024395popa_bar_abbaParticipantDolls are very important because they teach kids what a proper body type should look like. Very important for shidduchim.
For example the B****e doll hayadua.
July 24, 2014 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1024396HaLeiViParticipantHey, come to think of it, why is this not a problem when you make a Golem? Does this mean I will have to stop my project?
July 24, 2014 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #1024397akupermaParticipantIt’s just a tool for manufacturing solid objects in small numbers. For large numbers, a regular factory set-up is more efficient. But, for example, to make “one” plastic fork, it doesn’t pay to do a factory run.
All halachos of intellectual and industrial property apply.
July 24, 2014 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm #1024398Sam2ParticipantHaLeiVi: Interesting. Well, having a human child isn’t considered this Issur. So maybe the Issur doesn’t apply when creating a living person?
July 24, 2014 6:04 pm at 6:04 pm #1024399SayIDidIt™ParticipantIf he breaks off his nose before he scans himself, wild that help? 😉

I know with dolls some people say you should disfigure them and then it’s fine. Does getting rid of the stomach count?
July 24, 2014 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm #1024401yitzykParticipantYou can’t just make one fork. You have to make one for Milchig and one for Fleishig. You have to look in the seforim to determine what colors are kosher for each one.
Then you can debate if ABS plastic utensils need tevila.
July 24, 2014 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #1024402zahavasdadParticipantIts not just for dolls, Ive seen it used to toy prototypes
And Actually its a legal issue because you can make toy plastic guns with it
July 24, 2014 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #1024403👑RebYidd23ParticipantZahavasdad, you can make real, working guns with it.
July 25, 2014 8:53 am at 8:53 am #1024404RandomexMemberSorta related: If you search the ‘Net for “Afate Gnikou”, you’ll find him. He built a 3D printer out of parts of junked electronics.
July 25, 2014 1:32 pm at 1:32 pm #1024405Kosher HamMember@crazybrit: What is Step #3?
The only problem with 3D printing that I could think of is printing articles from the Bais HaMikdash, e.g., the Menorah.
July 25, 2014 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #1024406Veltz MeshugenerMemberPretty sure it’s avodah zara and will distract boys from learning and lead to pritzus.
July 25, 2014 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #1024407HaLeiViParticipantPrint out good day.
