So lately Google has really been bugging me. Just little things, but they’re starting to add up.
- the little pop-up on the Google homepage that says “A faster way to browse the web.” I HAVE Chrome installed. And Google tells me this when I click on the pop-up!
- The new Gmail. It’s pretty, but doesn’t fit on my screen nicely. So I changed back to the old user interface, but it keeps shunting back to the new one. Really, what’s the point of forcing people to use an interface they don’t like?
- The new Google navigation bar. What was wrong with the old one? But that’s not what bugs me. For some reason, my browser keeps switching back and forth between the old and the new, and keeps displaying the new blah blah pop-up thingy. (Although this might have something to do with my cookie settings…)
- Google SafeSearch. Nice feature, but it blocks really random things (like “ami”). And it won’t let you change the setting from strict.
ICOT, anyone – any solutions?!

January 25, 2012 12:42 am at 12:42 am #935890Boro Park GirlMembercrazybrit- I liked that feature. It would come up what i wanted to type and i could just click “go”!!!
January 25, 2012 2:59 am at 2:59 am #935891OneOfManyParticipantI like that feature. It’s kinda fun to see what other people search for. Also, if you use the Google search box on your toolbar, it only suggests and doesn’t autofill (which is annoying). 🙂
But at least you can turn that feature off. Unlike some others… X_X
January 25, 2012 4:29 am at 4:29 am #935892HaQerMemberGoogle SafeSearch is probably run by Mishpacha

Sorry, I’m not familiar with any of these issues 🙁
I suggest Googling – that’s what I always do.
February 1, 2012 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #935895OneOfManyParticipantOh I’ve googled. I have found a lot of forums that bash Google for these issues. 🙂
February 1, 2012 11:31 pm at 11:31 pm #935896squeakParticipantHaqer, do you mean because they block Ami? I noticed that, and had the exact same thought.
February 2, 2012 6:35 am at 6:35 am #935897Shraga18ParticipantHave you considered switching to Yiddleit? It’s an advanced search engine with features that Google doesn’t have, and it totally supports various tzedakos. You can even choose which one you mainly want to support with your searches!

March 5, 2012 11:26 pm at 11:26 pm #935898OneOfManyParticipantAnd their Blogger is also annoying. The timestamps in my blog are off – and what has the help forum to say? “This is a known issue.” Nice. Plus, it needs to add a cookie to my browser to block my own pageviews. Which is utterly absurd on several counts.
March 6, 2012 4:03 am at 4:03 am #935899OneOfManyParticipantDoes anyone know how to fix the timestamp thingy?
March 6, 2012 4:03 am at 4:03 am #935900DerechMemberoneofmany: What do you blog about?
March 6, 2012 4:22 am at 4:22 am #935901OneOfManyParticipantLiterature and criticism (tempted yet?).
March 6, 2012 4:39 am at 4:39 am #935902DerechMemberActually, I am. How would I locate it to read it.
March 6, 2012 5:27 am at 5:27 am #935903yitayningwutParticipantI’ve been having the timestamp issue too. Comments always show up Pacific Time.
March 6, 2012 5:52 am at 5:52 am #935904LogicianParticipantOOM – do you have a filter ? K9, for example, forces safe search, and you have to switch the settings there. It worked for me.
March 6, 2012 5:59 am at 5:59 am #935905OneOfManyParticipantenglishmajorsagainstshakespeare. This is a new one (just switched over), so not much to see.
March 6, 2012 7:21 am at 7:21 am #935906ToiParticipantI shudder when I type in two words and see how the goyishe’ velt usually ends off my sentence.
March 6, 2012 12:48 pm at 12:48 pm #935907For gmail: your issue is easily fixed by clicking the options ‘wheel’ on the right top, then choosing “Compact”. Almost the way it always was.
March 6, 2012 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #935908OneOfManyParticipantyitayningwut: Why isn’t anyone doing anything about it?! It’s a really bad bug.
Logician: Takah…at home we have Jnet. It’s kind of weird that it can force settings on my individual Google account. I’m going to see how it works at school. Thanks!
Toi: huh?
TCG: My real issue was with the fact that they kept changing to the new one against my will…although it actually hasn’t happened recently. Maybe they figured out that there are some old fogies who don’t want to change?
March 6, 2012 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #935909yitayningwutParticipantOneOfMany – Cool blog. Question: How do you make that thing on the bottom of each post with the check-boxes to select if the post was good or not? Is there a widget for it?
March 6, 2012 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #935910yitayningwutParticipantYeah, I don’t know what their issue is. Maybe they want us all to move to the left coast.
March 6, 2012 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #935911LogicianParticipantToi – great point! I’ve wondered if people “shtel” on that.
March 6, 2012 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #935912DerechMemberoneofmany: You switched over from livejournal? What is your established site?
March 6, 2012 10:46 pm at 10:46 pm #935913OneOfManyParticipantyitayningwut: Thanks. 🙂 You can do it by going to the blog design main page (Edit Layout), and clicking on the “Edit” in the corner of the “Blog Posts’ box. Check off “Reactions.” You can type in your own, too.
Derech: Don’t really have one…I’m not so serious about it. Why so curious? (Now I’m curious.)
March 7, 2012 1:09 am at 1:09 am #935914yitayningwutParticipantOneOfMany – Lol, that’s awesome. Thanks.
March 7, 2012 1:47 am at 1:47 am #935915kapustaParticipantOOM: Aside from the content being lost on me, the blog looks nice. 🙂 (And the background!) I also noticed some other details which I sort of recognized 😉 (Any way to… uhh…?)
March 7, 2012 2:07 am at 2:07 am #935916OneOfManyParticipantyitayningwut: Hee hee, I like. 🙂
kapusta: lol, we’re finally half the way there…maybe I’ll make a dummy email for the blog.

There now is a way to… uhh… 🙂
March 28, 2012 10:42 pm at 10:42 pm #935920OneOfManyParticipantI just discovered something – when you do a Google search for the terms “binary,” “octal,” or “hexadecimal,” Google writes the number of results using the numerical system entered.
Google, you drive me absolutely bonkers…but I have to admit, you are still kinda awesome. 🙂
March 28, 2012 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #935921yentingyentaParticipantgmail has this new feature (new to me cuz i just found it)
i had to send a doc to someone. so i filled in the subject, then typed in the email “attached is…” but forgot about attaching the doc.i pressed send and up popped “you typed in the email body “attached is” but not document attached. proceed with sending?” with a choice yes or no. saved me the embarrassment of having to send the email over
i thought that was pretty shticky
March 29, 2012 12:19 pm at 12:19 pm #935922Just SmileParticipantOOM –
For the issue of the chrome pop-up, it only shows up when you aren’t using Chrome. Even if you have chrome installed it will show up if you aren’t using it. If you want you can try to set your home page to http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=com which some people have said doesn’t display it for them. (I wasn’t able to replicate it but I almost exclusively use chrome so its not a big deal for me.)
For the Gmail “doesn’t fit on my screen nicely” problem – did you try adjusting the display density of Gmail?
To adjust this, just follow these steps:
Click the gear icon at the top right corner of your inbox. (Not the one in your navigation bar, the one right on top of the inbox.)
Choose from Comfortable (least dense), Cozy, and Compact (densest).
As for the nav bar – Google is in a big process of giving a make-over to all their sites. One of the advantages of the make-over will be that the sites will be consistent with one another. While in the process you will see some sites with the updated nav bar and some without. This shouldn’t be an issue when all is said and done.
As for the safe search – as you have found out, it’s because of your filter. It’s not an account setting, but rather a cookie setting that Jnet can enforce.
Hope this helps
March 29, 2012 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #935923OneOfManyParticipantThanks for the tips. 🙂
January 28, 2013 5:20 am at 5:20 am #935924OneOfManyParticipantHas anyone noticed how similar the new Google Images and iTunes configurations are? I wonder why that is…
