July 25, 2012 1:14 am at 1:14 am #1024627WIYMemberNot sure this is productive for the 9 days. The 9 days are a bad time. We arent supposed to sugar coat it or lessen the badness of the time. On the contrary we are so far removed from even feeling what we should feel that we should try to go out of our way to feel the badness of the time, not try to be jolly. Mishenichnas Av memaatin besimcha.
I know you meant well.

Lessen, don’t eliminate.
July 25, 2012 4:10 am at 4:10 am #1024629🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI don’t have to take anyone shopping.
I have time to listen to lots of shiurim cuz the CD player is always free.
July 25, 2012 9:51 am at 9:51 am #1024630haifagirlParticipantI had a friend (now deceased) who said she always had mixed feelings about this time. Although it’s generally a sad time, her parents were liberated on 9 Av.
July 25, 2012 11:38 am at 11:38 am #1024631SayIDidIt™ParticipantWIY: I know you meant well.
Thanks!
Syag: Why don’t you consider purchasing a mp3 player? SanDisk has the Sansa Clip+ which is very small yet excellent quality! You can find a brand new 4GB for around $35 online! Maybe get your kids to buy you one with a speaker for your birthday…

July 25, 2012 12:43 pm at 12:43 pm #1024633557ParticipantLessen, don’t eliminate.
dash, although your statement seems perfectly logical, this is not necessarily correct. To see this, take a look at the Mishna Berurah 551:1, sif katan aleph. The shaar hatzion on that Mishna Berurah brings down a way to see things your way, but also a way to see things the Mishna Berurah’s way.
July 25, 2012 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #1024634Sam2ParticipantDash: I believe whether or not it means to just lessen or to eliminate completely is two Dei’os in a Tosfos in Yevamos.
July 25, 2012 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #1024635seedysParticipantMy daughter was born in the 9 days. I asked my Rav many years ago, if we were allowed to celebrate her birthday with a party. He said, it was perfectly OK, as long as there is no music at the party.
July 25, 2012 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #1024636TheGoqParticipantWe can appreciate that the rest of the year we are not vegitarians carnivores rule!!!
July 25, 2012 5:10 pm at 5:10 pm #1024637chocandpatienceMemberI’m with WIY on this one. We are *supposed* to be sad in the 9 days, not try to find thingst to be happy about.
We should be doing this ‘seeing the good’ exercise when something we consider to be bad happens to us.

A time to strengthen ourselves in ahavas yisrael (should be done whole year but at least in 3 weeks. Read gedolim stories like R’Scheinberg & R’Finkel who had the greatest ahavas yisrael of our dor! Iy”h by doing this it will speed Moshiach’s arrival!
July 26, 2012 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm #1024642557ParticipantIy”h by doing this it will speed Moshiach’s arrival!
Moshiach will come when Hashem is good and ready for him to come. Our job is to learn Torah and do mitzvos and trust in Hashem. Period.
July 26, 2012 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm #1024643KozovMemberThere are maamorei razal that tell us that if we do something it will hasten moshiachs coming. For example gidola tzdaka shemikareves es hageula. What do you think that was for, informational purposes only?
July 26, 2012 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #1024644TheGoqParticipantNews Item:
The Agriculture Department is under fire from ranchers and Capitol Hill after encouraging employees to go vegetarian one day a week and warning that meat production contributes to climate change.
The department has since backed away from the statements, but not before causing a bovine brouhaha, particularly at a time when the drought is threatening America’s ranchers.
“This move by USDA should be condemned by anyone who believes agriculture is fundamental to sustaining life on this planet,” said J.D. Alexander, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
The offending comments came in an online newsletter to employees about “greening” efforts. The update schooled employees on ways to save energy, by using energy-efficient light bulbs, installing specialized roofs on buildings — and participating in what’s known as the “Meatless Monday” initiative.
think one day is hard try 9 in a row
July 26, 2012 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1024645yytzParticipant“We should be doing this ‘seeing the good’ exercise when something we consider to be bad happens to us.”
But the Shulchan Aruch (I think OC 230:5) says one should always be accustomed to saying, “Everything the merciful one does is for the good.” Always. (It doesn’t say “always, except for the 9 days.”) Gamzu l’tovah is equally true during this time, so I think there’s nothing wrong with looking on the bright side even now (provided we’re mourning and decreasing our joy as required, etc.) Believing everything is for the best is a basic facet of emuna and bitachon, in which we are obligated at all times.
July 27, 2012 1:30 am at 1:30 am #1024647557Participantthink one day is hard try 9 in a row
Shabbos. Twice this year.
July 27, 2012 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1024648557ParticipantThere are maamorei razal that tell us that if we do something it will hasten moshiachs coming. For example gidola tzdaka shemikareves es hageula. What do you think that was for, informational purposes only?
Gedolim stories are not tzedaka.
July 27, 2012 3:12 am at 3:12 am #1024649KozovMemberFirst of all i would assume he was talking about gaining ahavas yisroel from reading these stories after all that was the relevance of these stories to the 9 days. Second of all your response consequentially made a further reaching assumption than the scope of YWs comment which i adressed in my response.
July 27, 2012 12:56 pm at 12:56 pm #1024650557ParticipantKozov: I’m not sure what your first sentence is arguing on. As for your second sentence, while there are mamrei razal that say such things, it is not for us to make the cheshbon of how quickly moshiach will come. I feel like this was addressed in a recent thread someone.
Anyway, since we don’t know when moshiach will come, it is impossible to know the extent that our tzedakah (in your example) hastens his coming. We have emunas chochamim that it will hasten his coming because razal said so. But how much so is impossible to determine. So our job is to learn Torah and do mitzvos and trust in Hashem. Moshiach will come when Hashem is good and ready for him to come.
July 27, 2012 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #1024651KozovMemberI dont see how not being able to do determine when or how has anything to do with why he does it. As for the first sentence, i was saying that these are not just gadol stories per say but something that had an uvechein in torah and mitzvos which is more likely to hasten moshiachs coming. Though admittedly i didnt explain why anything besides for tzdaka had a connection (though ahavas yisroel is connected to it). I probably got thrown off track because your response seemed to indicate that you were trying to completely contradict what i said by saying absolutely “gedolim stories is not tzedaka” when (in retrospect) clearly all it did was address a technical aspect in my response not the essence, which you waited to do till now, which i wonder about. In any case, consider the words of the rambam in Hilchos Tshuva Perek 3 Halacha 4:
???? ?? ??? ????? ???? ?? ???? ???? ????? ???? ???? ????? ????. ??? ?? ????? ???? ???? ????? ????. ??? ??? ??? ??? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ?? ?????. ??? ???? ??? ??? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ?? ???? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???? ???? ?? ???? ????? ?? ?? ????? ????? ??????. ????? ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ????? ??????? ????? ?????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ??? ??????? ??? ??? ????. ????? ???? ???? ????? ????? ???? ??? ??????? ???? ?????? ????? ??????? ????????? ?? ????? ????:
July 27, 2012 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #1024652557ParticipantKozov: Sorry, but I just don’t know exactly what we are arguing about, if anything.
July 30, 2012 7:46 am at 7:46 am #1024653SayIDidIt™ParticipantSyag: Why don’t you consider purchasing a mp3 player? SanDisk has the Sansa Clip+ which is very small yet excellent quality! A Double Gulp isn’t 32 ounces, it used to be 64 and currently is 50. Also it is not twice as large as a Gulp, which is only 20 ounces. If you want 32 ounces you need a Big Gulp.

Thanks SiDi™, I actually bought one of those for my son in yeshiva ‘cuz it was the only thing out there that does not list video capability on the box. The oddest thing happened to me though, befitting for Tisha B’av actually. Tisha B’av was my brothers last kadish for my sister as it is 11 months now since she died. Thinking of that, I was looking through some of her stuff since I was sad anyway, and found a walkman in the pocket of her backpack. I emptied it today so I could fill it with shiurim. It was a horribly painful process but I did it.
Regarding Double Gulps – How did you know????? My kids are slurpee-holics but I have always had a serious Double Gulp addiction. Ever since the 64 oz days. When I was sitting shiva for my other sister I had just gotten back from seminary two days before and someone brought a double gulp to the shiva house knowing how much I missed them.
July 31, 2012 1:18 pm at 1:18 pm #1024658SayIDidIt™ParticipantSyag: I know I’m like 11 months late, but its still ‘in the year’, so: HaMakom Yinachem Eschem B’Soch Shor Avwlwy Zion V’Yerushalayim…
May you, your family and all of Klal Yisroel know no more pain!

July 29, 2014 11:29 am at 11:29 am #1024664FillTheClockMemberThis isn’t really a good thing about the 9 days, but I am trying to have people commit to learn or say Tehillim a few minutes extra every day specifically in hone zchus of the situation in eretz Yisrael. My hope is to have a 24 hour rotation of learning from people all over the world. Would anyone like to participate or help me spread the word?
July 29, 2014 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm #1024665SayIDidIt™ParticipantFillTheClock, why don’t you start a new thread? People are not going to notice this stuck in middle of a thread. Hatzlacha!
