“May not a future generation well ask how any Scientist, in full possession of his faculties and with adequate knowledge of information theory, could execute the feat of cognitive acrobatics necessary to sincerely believe that a supremely complex machine of information, storage and retrieval servicing millions of cells, diagnosing defects and then repairing them in a teleonomic Von Newman machine manner, arose in randomness – the antipole of information”.

I thin it means that by humans there’s a concept of either something will probably happen or a probability that given x amount of tries it will show up. But that just tells you how likely something is to happen not that it will DEFINITELY happen or when it will happen. But Hashem knows if and when it will happen. Meaning if you spin a dice x amount of times the probability of getting a 4 is x. Hashem knows if you spin that dice the 3rd spin will be a 4. Am I making sense or have I just confused myself and everyone reading this?

yes.
November 10, 2010 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #925654squeakParticipantWIY is essentially correct.
de Finetti’s point is that probability can be used to develop beliefs, but does not have any objective reality.
I brought the quote as a counter statement to yours- the fact that an event is a “scientific impossibility”, i.e. statistical probability near 0, does not in any way shape what has happened or what will happen.
If tomorrow morning the sun doesn’t rise (probability of near 0*), you would not be able to pretend it did not happen simply because it was too unlikely.
* I say near 0 because on the day when “Shemesh B’Givon Dom”, the sun in fact did not rise in this part of the world. Now you can’t discount the fact that it happened simply because it is impossible statistically. Because probability does not exist (except in your mind).

November 11, 2010 2:58 am at 2:58 am #925657bymeidelMemberwow thank you so much everyone! these quotes are really good. I think I’m going to use these 2 that WIY posted:
If I am I because I am I, and you are you because you are you, then I am I and you are you. But if I am I because you are you and you are you because I am I, then I am not I and you are not you!

November 11, 2010 4:31 am at 4:31 am #925658popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf a tree is a tree because a tree is a tree, and a car is a car because a car is a car, then a tree is a tree and a car is a car. But, if a tree is a tree because a car is a car, and a car is a car because a tree is a tree, then a tree is not a tree and car is not a car.
I don’t understand this. What does it mean? Why would a tree be a tree because a car is a car?
Maybe I could understand if a tree was a tree because a different tree was a tree. But then, the conclusion would not be that it is not a tree. The conclusion would be that it should not be a tree.
Even so, I am I means nothing because while I can imagine a car acting like a tree, “car” and “tree” are both objects which something can become, however, “I” is a word which is used by a person to refer to himself- “I am I” is completely redundant.
All kidding aside, does this line actually mean anything?

Incorrect. Knowing that one is humble is not a contradiction to being humble.
Humility means understanding that any qualities and talents that one has is not one’s own work or success, rather it is God Who has given him these qualities, and one is therefore no better than one without these abilities.

This line reminded me of the following poem:
~~ HOW DID YOU LIVE YOUR DASH?~~
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth…
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars…the house…the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard…
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile..
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read
With your life’s actions to rehash…
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
