Does anyone know if you must give ma’aser on an inheritance? What if the estate already left 10% or more to charity, does the recipient still have to give ma’aser on the balance?

The parent already gave maaser on the money while he was alive, when he earned it years ago.

We have this going on in my family now. I wonder if the State of Israel is a valid Tzedaka!

It’s no so clear that we must give ma’aser on money at all. This is a VERY complicated area and Wolf is 100% right.

If you set it up with a Generation Skip, does the skipped generation also need to give maaser, or only the generation that gets it.

Because if only the generation which gets it has to pay, it is probably a good idea to make generation skips so that it doesn’t get maasered twice.

    and Wolf is 100% right.

Well, I’m glad that someone feels that I was right to use the old-time radio announcer voice. 🙂

The kids probably have no idea what that is. Pity on them 🙂

I’m confused about the generation skip. What difference should that make? What if money was left to three generations at one time (my parents, myself, my children?)

And if like the o/p asked, at least 10% was left to charity, do the heirs have to give on the remainder?

Who said the kids have to give even if nothing was left to charity? And if they do, why should it make a difference if 10% was contributed to charity by will of the deceased? The estate certainly has no tzedaka obligation. If anything, it would only become incumbent *after* disbursement.

How is this different than a birthday present? Whatever money you get you have to give maaser from. The only exception that i can think of is if the money was given for a specific purchase.

And in the case where the estate left 10% to a charity then you will have to pay 1% less maaser (think about it).

Isn’t that considered income? Then should one be required to give maasar on it?

Just like your boss has to give maasar then pay you then you have to give maasar.

This is not a new question. Either do the proper research in those seforim that discuss it, or ask your rav. An appropriate question for the CR would be, “Where can I find information about this topic?”

Think First- I don’t think a boss or business owner has to give ma’aser on his gross income.

    – we looked into it once, it seems that the heirs do need to give maaser, what difference does it make that the niftar gave maaser?

    – the book is called Maaser Kesafim by Cyril Domb et al

    – I don’t know if the state is a valid recipient of tzedakah but Reb Shlomo Zalman z”l said that the IDF is

I do not know the halacha but in my personnal case anyone seeing my ad for “Pirkei Avot” or “Torah and Zionism?” on Yeshiva world news please be aware that the ad is being paid by my inheritence money. I figure that saving lives is a tzedakah and since Aliya is the only life insurance policy I am buying VERY expensive ads here
