I didn’t want to start another thread but I have a question so I will post it here. This Friday, July 1, is Canada Day which is the anniversary of Canada’s confederation. One of the ways it is celebrated is by huge fireworks displays. From where I live, I am often able to see the main fireworks display from my balcony. As these fireworks don’t start until it is dark, it will be after Shabbat starts. Is there any halachic reason why I should not watch the fireworks on Shabbat?

Even though we will do our best to answer questions and such, just please remember that the cr is not a replacement for competent halachic authority.
😀 Zuberman! 😀

On that note I remember on new years eve of 2000 which was on Friday night I spent shabbos in Brooklyn and at midnight I was walking home from a shier and of course a few miles away in Menhaten they were having these spactaculer fire works going up in the sky, the only way for me not to see would have been to walk with closed eyes.
June 29, 2011 1:11 pm at 1:11 pm #1100891minyan galMemberThanks for answering my question, yossi and deiyezooger. I had a class at the Chabad Learning Centre last night and I did ask the Rabbi the same question. He said that of course I can watch from my balcony. He said it would even add to the joy of Shabbat – lots of extra lights. I personally didn’t think that there would be anything wrong if I watched, but, of course, personal opinion doesn’t count. I think I will take this opportunity to wish all of my fellow Canadian posters a happy Canada Day. Enjoy your day off work – it is very nice that it falls on a Friday this year, giving a lot of people a 3 day weekend.

June 29, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1100893minyan galMemberWell, if you are in Winnipeg, you can watch the fireworks at the Forks. If you are in Ottawa, I think they are near Parliament Hill.

ATTN Joseph –
I was listening to a shiur last night that really conveyed the point I’ve tried to express to you regarding how I will defend the integrity of a poster even when I disagree with his views, and how you (and two other posters) misread that as me supporting their views (to the point of calling me a liberal, anti-frum etc.)
If you are interested (and you do strike me as the curious type) it was a Rabbi Wallerstein shiur titled “Parshas Ve’eschanan – What is true emes” Start at 25 minutes. Before that he is just giving mussar about the importance of not talking during davening.
Just thought you might be interested since he says it so much better than I do 🙂
