Just want to start another one, G S 3 is getting too long.
November 15, 2010 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #1100686bptParticipantOK, how’s this:
I just heard on the radio yesterday that kids that have a TV in their room (and presumably the same could be said for kids with texting / internet access) are x times (I forgot the exact number) more likley to engage in “high risk” behavior than other kids who don’t. The report could not decide if its becuase of the constant barrage of negative behavoir or if its becuase those kids spend less “family time” among theor sibs and parents.
Either way, what I see from this is a SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY, and you (and your family) will be a whole lot better off
November 15, 2010 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #1100687SacrilegeMemberI love statistics….
Hows this. Parents who ACTUALLY parent their child are more likely to have children who grow up normally with morals and direction.
November 15, 2010 6:07 pm at 6:07 pm #1100688blinkyParticipantAcording to this report BPT, some of us here are likely to engage in “high risk ” behavior…Ouch! i’m loggging off now!!!! 🙂
Its so sad general schmooze 3 ended (sigh) it had a lot in it! A recap- Doc and BP Totty almost meeting, red wagons (i still never got that one), rewriting history, sac and WIY….I’ll miss it!
November 15, 2010 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #1100689bptParticipantThis is true. We take the time to eat melaveh malkah each week, even if we have things to do / places to go. Sometimes, its as late as midnight, but its one time a week we try to spend as a group (or as many of us that can make it)
November 15, 2010 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #1100690WIYMemberSacrilege
“parent their child”
Thats rather vague and open to interpretation dont you think?
November 15, 2010 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1100691tunabeigel123MemberBlinky
General shmooze 3 is still open i was just in the mood of starting a new thread so i started this!
November 15, 2010 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #1100692bptParticipant“some of us here are likely to engage in “high risk ” behavior”
Blinky, say it ain’t so.. You have a TV? I don’t belive it. And if so, (which I still don’t beleive) I’m willing to bet after the kids arrive, you’ll trash it. Its just who you are (or will someday become).
But the whole conversation is silly, becuase I don’t believe it. The “risky-ist” behavoir you engage in is revealing personal data in the CR
November 15, 2010 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #1100693blinkyParticipantBPt- (and presumably the same could be said for kids with texting / internet access)
I was reffering to that!!! not the TV part! Yes, you were right to assume i dont have a TV (remember louis lane) Sorry couldn’t resist:)
November 15, 2010 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #1100694SacrilegeMemberWIY
No. Be a parent not a friend. Set rules. I hate to be trite but parenting isnt a popularity contest, kids need boundaries and thrive with discipline. I’m not saying that you need to bust out the ole whip, but you can still be fair AND stern.
It just annoys me when people blame the media and pop culture for their short comings.
November 15, 2010 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #1100695bptParticipantTexting is a bit harder to eradicate. Its like a phone today, just more addictive. (But I am glad to see my impression of you is accuarate, Blink 🙂
November 15, 2010 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #1100696bptParticipantAnd Sac, today, the velvet gloves need to be a full time accessory. Its just the way it is.
I changed my mind on 2 issues (drivers license and cell phone) way before I would have thought I would as recently as 3 years ago. Same goes for learning after the wedding.
Times change, and parents (good parents, I might add) adapt. Its either that, or the ice on the pond cracks and we all sink.
November 15, 2010 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1100697SacrilegeMemberBPT
I agree, not every child is the same and not every situation is optimal for each child. Thats part of being a good parent, knowing whats good for each child. On the other hand, if you have bed rock rules, just because a kid makes a big enough stink, doesnt mean you should go and change them just because they are a spoiled brat.
November 15, 2010 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #1100698bptParticipantAh, welcome to parenting 101. (or 1.0, as they call it in the digital age).
Knowing when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em is what makes us grey and wrinkled. Its a constant judgement call, one which I / Mrs make every day. Most times, its a no brainer; sometimes we stay up at night, wondering if we made the right call.
Things like kashrus yes/no would not be up for debate. But if one of the rank-and-file decided that white shirts 24/7 is too much to handle, yes, that I’d compromise on (and in fact, I did compromise on a similar area).

Texting is easy to stop if you are the account holder, just call your service provider and tell them to put a block on text messages. I did this on my own phone so that people would have call me if they wanted someting.

November 16, 2010 2:21 am at 2:21 am #1100703ronrsrMemberone AK-47 isn’t all that valuable. The real cost is in the ammunition.

I was just thinking, you might really like the Shmuz. I think he may be up your alley. He has spoken on many topics and has a very interesting perspective on things. Let me know what you think.
November 16, 2010 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #1100711bptParticipantIve seen the bumper sticker, but never followed up on it. You were on target with R’ YY, so let me see if you can go 2-0

Oh Im feeling the pressure. A lot is riding on this lol 🙂
November 16, 2010 10:31 pm at 10:31 pm #1100714bptParticipantNah, from the post you just penned on the “bochurim” thread, I see you and I have a LOT in common, despite our age gap.

Nah, from the post you just penned on the “bochurim” thread, I see you and I have a LOT in common, despite our age gap.
I agree with that statement. They say I am wise beyond my years :-p
November 17, 2010 6:33 pm at 6:33 pm #1100716bptParticipant“They” only say that to bolster your self esteem. What they really mean is, you ain’t scratched the surface, pal.
Not to worry; I thought I had it all under wraps at 20.. until I got married.
Then I learnt the hard way.
November 17, 2010 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #1100717WIYMemberBP Totty
You think Im 20?
I havent seen 20 in a few years buddy. I mid 20’s and lets leave it at that.
November 17, 2010 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #1100718myfriendMemberWIY: Upper-mid’s or lower-mid’s?
November 17, 2010 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #1100719bptParticipantMid 20s? I got clothing that’s older than that! (I really do have a down jacket that’s that old)
From my rung on the ladder, mid 20s might as well be in diapers.
Forget getting the business end from your wife;I can’t wait till you’re the father of a 20 y/o. Boy, will you see how much you’ve learned since you were in your mid-20s!
November 17, 2010 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #1100720WIYMembermyfriend
Lower mids. Why? What about you?
November 17, 2010 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #1100721WIYMemberBP Totty
Are you trying to scare me out of getting married lol?!
November 17, 2010 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #1100722bptParticipantScare you? No, not at all.
Think of marriage as my sending off the boys to EY – serious business, lots to worry about, but really no alternative if you’re in the arena that plays by those rules.
And like EY, it can be trouble, but if it good, its heaven on earth!
So stop straddling the line WIY and take the plunge!
November 18, 2010 5:25 am at 5:25 am #1100723myfriendMemberWIY – I was curious. I am lower mid too (possibly but not necessarily within the same decade.)
November 21, 2010 6:13 am at 6:13 am #1100724WIYMembermyfriend
“(possibly but not necessarily within the same decade.)”
Whats that supposed to mean? You cant be straight about your age?
November 21, 2010 6:14 am at 6:14 am #1100725WIYMemberBPT
Did you hear any “Shmuz”es yet?
November 22, 2010 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #1100726bptParticipantNot yet. I did go to the site, but since I don’t have web access at home, the only way for me to listen to a shiur is by downloading it (and I keep forgetting my MP3 player at home).
November 22, 2010 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #1100727WIYMemberBPT
The Yetzer Hara is obviously at work hehehe (evil laugh) 🙂
November 23, 2010 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #1100728bptParticipantI know the GS 3 was getting a bit long, but there was some critical info listed there about new cars on the market.
Has anyone seen the LA car show review? (its on the NY Times site)Let me save you a bunch of time, and scroll down till you get to the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG. And be sure you keep one hand free, so you can close your jaw when you see the photo.
Sigh, if I were a rich man…..
November 23, 2010 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #1100729WIYMemberBPT
Lets keep German cars out of this. There are enough good Italian, English and Japanese cars to drool over. lol!
November 23, 2010 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #1100730blinkyParticipantBPT- i clarified something for you in the yeshivishe shprach thread by the way….
November 23, 2010 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #1100731SacrilegeMemberBPT
Did you see the new Ferrari California? its the first Ferrari Gran Turismo with a mid-front 8-cyl engine. Hello!
November 23, 2010 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #1100732bptParticipantAt this point, WIY, the benz might be considered an American car, as they merged w/ Chrysler. Or we can rely on Jackie Mason’s heter 😉
And Sac, yes I did see that, but not at the LA show review. The problem w/ Ferrarri is the cars all look the same, year after year.
Blinky, I’ll be at the other post in a few.. we’re talkin’ cars here!
