Does any one no anything about gateshead old seminary in england? What are the girls like? Is it reccommended?
September 28, 2010 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm #703133tzippiMemberI don’t know much but thought I’d comment to keep this current.
It’s a wonderful place. Consider going for at least two years. Excellent for someone who really wants to be a teacher but not exclusively – lots of halacha, hashkafa, guidance. I think that Americans see it differently than the English girls; for them, it’s just a natural option. For Americans, they envision a certain mold that may or may not be true. There is a variety of girls there.
Most of the girls I know from the states who’ve gone are daughters of alumni.
Hope this gets the conversation going.

If anyone else has more info please share cause i have to start applying for seminaries soon.

October 19, 2010 12:33 pm at 12:33 pm #703136Leah222MemberThe informmation above is not correct. There are TWO seminaries in Gateshead. The ‘OLD’ one that has been around since Rabbi Desslers days run by Rabbi Miller zt”l and Rabbi Kohn and the ‘NEW’ – Bais Chaya Rochel run by Rabbi Avraham Katz.
The OLD one is much bigger and tends to cater to a more academic and teacher orientated crowd.. but of course there are many overlaps.
Some points about the OLD Seminary.
1. They teach alot.. but there is not a stress on academic – everyone works to best of their ability. You don’t even get test results back when you get them.. cause the results is not what is important.. its the effort and the hashkofos!
2. Being that it is a 3 year program, you have a nice mix of different ages adn girls are friendly with girls from all classes. In general, the Seminary does not treat girls like kids and expects a mature attitude back. Typically, about 190 girls come in 1st year. Perhaps 10 leave by start of 2nd year.. many girls will get engaged or leave during/end 2nd year.. leaving perhaps 100 in teh 3rd year. Friendships are built over long time and very solid.
3. They do NOT offer any extra college courses.. however there are some courses available in the community like computers etc which girls may take.
4. Gateshead OLD really prepares you in an excellent way to be an amazing teacher. They give you tons of knowledge plus teaching experience in the school system.. but this is mainly concentrated in the 3rd year. Not every girl there wants to teach.. but here are many.
5. Being in Gateshead is an experience.. compared to USA.. level of living is so much less gashmius and may come as a shock!
6. Being the tremendous amount of applicants applying, it can be very difficult to get it.. and it is recommended that you get your teachers, frineds and even yourself to write letters to the Seminary explaining why you want to come.
What else do you want to know?
October 20, 2010 1:22 am at 1:22 am #703137i love coffeParticipantThank you so much for this information. As I am about to start applying for different schools, I would really like to apply at Gateshead, but I cant find any phone number, email, website (maybe there isn’t since internet is probably most likely not allowed).
How can I get a way to contact them?
October 20, 2010 2:16 am at 2:16 am #703138nmamaMemberjust google- Gateshead Jewish Teachers Trainig College to get a phone, address etc. It’s a great place, especially if you would like less of a spoon fed learning experience and more of independent learning, research , chavrusah style. Also, as mentioned experiencing a slower paced, less gashmius lifestyle is very enlightening.

October 24, 2010 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #703142i love coffeParticipantDo you have any info about the new Gateshead?
October 24, 2010 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #703143thinking jewMemberGateshead Old is by far the best seminary out there. It is probably also one of the oldest.
First of all the fact that it is a three year course as opposed to one year makes you internalize what you learn in a very storng way. It becomes part of your life as oppose to floating on a cloud somewhere for a year and then crashing down to earth.
Also most seminaries stuff you with lots and lots of knowledge but Gateshead actually trains you how to think, it changes your way of thinking forever gives you a deeper life!
They also teach you to really appreciate Torah, not to just want to marry a “learning boy” but to actually appreciate every minute that your husband is learning, to really feel that every word of Torah is priceless!
Also a tremendous advantage is that your teachers are all Rabbanim. not ladies. and chushuva rabbanim at that.
and as someone mentioned you can create exceptionally meaningful relationships being that you live with these girls in a dorm for three full years.
If you are an intelligent young woman and would like more than just a wonderful experience, you want a better quality of life, then old gateshead seminary is a great choice.
good luck getting in.
October 25, 2010 2:02 am at 2:02 am #703144wasting my timeMembermy neice is @ the new gateshead and really loves it. put it this way, she said she was not going to “change” or be “brainwashed”, but within a week she was telling her mom how amazing the teachers are and the head is so nice and how she is going to do whatever they say! In terms of curriculum, I think the major diff is that they offer classes for other “career” choices, like hair/sheital, childcare etc–it is not just for teachers. and it is smaller. it is for a slightly different crowd still bais yaakov all the way, but maybe not the most academic.
