Hashem made a beautiful world, and I believe one of the biggest chillulei Hashem some frum Jews make is littering. It shows a lack of respect not only to the non-Jews we live with, but also to Hashem. I do not know if frum groups litter more than other groups per-say, but not everyone views it that way and we should hold ourselves to a higher standard regardless. When I was in high school, any trip we went on resulted in dozens of complaints from the non-Jewish and non-frum people around us.

Are there any Rabbis who are even addressing this issue at all?

It can make a Chillul Hashem, but disrespect to Hashem? Come on…

Sadly sometimes Derech Eretz takes a back seat to Limud Hatorah in some Yeshivos.

yekke, Yes I am sure Hashem does not care about the hills, valleys, rivers, waters, mountains, oceans, fish, birds, wild and domestic animals He created.

“And on the 6th day, Hashem created the soda cans, candy wrappers, beer bottles, plates and plastic eating utensils- and scattered them across the earth- onto every hill and valley and into the rivers as a sign of wonder and a salt-like covenant between Hashem and coca-cola inc. Then He created loud speakers to make (bad) music, in order to permeate the land with noise and vanquish silence and tranquility from the ears of man and beauty from his eyes.” Gensis 1,32.

i think the op is a racist, when you see a coloured fellow littering you dont post on couloured world news complaints about coloured people littering.

i agree littering is wrong dont reflect one persons disgusting behaviour to “frum yidden”

Garbage comes from nature, and is returned to nature, and is part of nature.

Hey; you’re right about the litter. People shouldn’t do it. It isn’t nice. It is a major lack of ??? ??? ?????? and it causes a ????? ?. But don’t blame it on HKB”H.

Great job on the Genesis, btw. It was very well written.

Non-biodegradable garbage definitely is not created by nature, nor is it being “returned” to nature when you litter.

Wrote a whole drosha, looked back at the previous posts and saw Yekke2’s comment. Deleted the drosha.

Humans are perfectly natural. Beavers are natural. A beaver dam is natural because a natural beaver created it. Non-biodegradable garbage is natural because it was created by natural humans. However, it does not “return to nature” when you litter, because it’s going to a place where it never was. (When you put an all-natural monk parakeet in New York you are also not “returning it to nature”.)

I’ve gone to places frum Jews have never been before me and there is littering, so no, Jews do not litter any more than others. We’re supposed to litter less, since you know, the whole be a light unto the nations thing.

You’re all dolts. People are also part of nature.

When a beaver eats a cherry and moves the pit somewhere, is that part of nature?

When a human drills for oil and turns it into plastic on the other side of the world and then fills it with transmission fluid in a third part of the world and then chucks it on the side of the road, that is also part of nature.

Even my calling you all dolts is part of nature. A particularly fine part.

If humans are part of nature, nothing can be returned to nature. It never left.

What bothers me most is when I see litter in Eretz Yisroel. God gave us the land, but not for throwing out our waste!

It strikes me a chutzpadilk. It’s as if you are invited into somebody’s home to live, and use the space you are given by your host to put your garbage!

    Matan,

Yes Im picturing what it would be like at the time of the burning bush if there was litter in Israel everywhere at the time:

“Moshe, moshe, do not remove your shoes from the place upon which you stand, for this ground is littered with broken beer bottles and HIV positive hypodermic needles- best leave those sandals on”

We should send all our non-biodegradable garbage into outer space so that it can naturally land on another planet.

Papa, just because something is part of nature doesn’t mean it’s OK to do it. The Torah and Chazal teach us that

Daas, I dont think my post is extreme at all.

    #1095827

    I obviously disagree.

Daas, you think its extreme, but present no reason or evidence why you feel that way. Not the best way to make a point. I was once called a religious extremist by a relative for not saying I think gay marriage is great. Its very easy to say “you are extreme”- hope you’re not getting lazy on me. Laziness is not a good quality- such as being too lazy to pick up after yourself and leave your garbage on the ground.

    #1095829

Let’s start by pointing out, as did crazybrit, that your thread title is offensive.

Do you expect anyone to really disagree with you and think it’s okay to litter? There’s a reason you got so many sarcastic responses. The whole point of this thread was to blast “frum people” for something which although definitely wrong, you are blowing way out of proportion. No one wants to disrespect others or HKB”H, they’re just being careless.

“The whole point of this thread was to blast “frum people””

Thats not true at all. The title is simply what its about- nothing more. Its not about non-Jews who litter or non-orthodox Jews who litter, because they are not on this site. It would not be productive to make a post on yeshiva coffee room “Korean Christians who litter”. But if Korean Christians were on this site, I would happily make that post.

And I specifically said in the OP I have no idea if frum-Jews litter more on average than any other group. I said we should hold ourselves to a higher standard, especially since a chillul Hashem is involved and questioned if Rabbi are even mentioning this. Years ago I heard Rabbis talk about it but not recently. I agree with you that they are just being careless- but thats a problem.

    Ben Adam LeMakom

(apposed to the other two very important issues of chillul Hashem and ben adam lechavero):

When you view tzizit, even though they dont have kedusha like tefillin, as having a connection to Hashem, you treat them with respect. You dont just throw them on the floor or sit on them. When you view a human being as being betzelem elokim, you naturally treat people with more respect. When you view nature, as Dovid Hamelech time and time again writes in tehillim reflects the handiwork of Hashem- you will naturally show more respect towards the wonders of Hashem as well. Which is why I believe this is both a ben adam lechaveiro and lemakom issue.

Kol hakavod newbee. You are in no way out of line with any of your comments. In fact this is such an important topic it deserves than coverage than this coffee room! I am new to Brooklyn and I have seen frum Jews throw their garbage out their car window! No one is saying everyone does this and I also believe that these aren’t bad ppl – just ignorant ones who don’t realize that what we do matters – ALWAYS! It’s very scary to think that there may be Yidden that actually feel that this behavior is ok or that that this is bashing Yidden. I suggest that when someone’s just not in the mood to care about these “little” things he should kindly remove his yarmulka (and anything else that may distinguish him as part of HKB”H’s Am kadosh!) since even the smallest candy wrapper is a HUGE chilul Hashem! And if anyone thinks that I’m extreme, please verify it first with a Gadol! (speaking of which I’d love to know if anyone would feel comfortable littering in front of Rav Shteinman shlita or lihavdil on the white house lawn?!?…)

    Frum Jews don’t litter.

Someone wearing a yarmulke should take it off before he litters.

The worst offenders are the ones who toss their filthy food wrappers out the car windows. Big Chillel Hashem which

Yom Kippur is not m’chaper, so enjoy the clean car.
