I’m looking to go to one of the CUNY. I’m looking to go to one with frum Jews so that there will be more pressure not to have events on Shabbos, etc. The problem is, Queens College and Brooklyn College don’t offer my major. Does anyone know of any frum Jewish population at Hunter, City, or any of the other colleges?
March 19, 2015 3:38 am at 3:38 am #1101759birdsonParticipantI know some frum guys studying engineering at City College, but I don’t know how large the presence is.
March 19, 2015 4:02 am at 4:02 am #1101760DyafMavenParticipantWhat major are you going for? and What do you mean by events? I went and taught at Brooklyn College.
March 19, 2015 4:31 am at 4:31 am #1101761bekitzurParticipantbirdson – that’s exactly where I’m thinking of going. Would you be able to find out for me what the culture’s like there, whether they are respectful about Yamim Tovim and things like that?
Mods – is it possible for me to get in touch with birdson?
Sorry, no.

Events: Review classes, meetings, etc.
March 19, 2015 5:38 am at 5:38 am #1101763birdsonParticipantI won’t see them for a few days so keep an eye out for updates.
March 19, 2015 3:20 pm at 3:20 pm #1101764mik5ParticipantI am at Brooklyn College now.
You definitely don’t need to worry about yomim tovim/ Shabbos, but you will have to make up the work that you miss.
There is a lot of anti-Israel sentiment on campus, however.
March 19, 2015 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #1101765kfbParticipantThere’s anti-Israel sentiment on a lot of campuses. FIGHT BACK!!!
March 19, 2015 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #1101766mik5ParticipantKFB – True, but Brooklyn College has been in the news recently, in terms of the anti-Israel events that have been going on there.
March 20, 2015 2:40 am at 2:40 am #1101767bekitzurParticipantI know someone who wants to start a counter-protest group for pro-Israel students (from frum to non-Jewish) but is afraid that the frum world will denounce it as “drawing attention to ourselves” and “not the Jewish way”.
I personally think it would be great if people knew that there are Jewish students who are pro-Israel and willing to stand up for it.
March 20, 2015 3:42 am at 3:42 am #1101768kfbParticipantDrawing attention to ourselves? Anti semitism already draws attention to ourselves. Why should we be afraid to live a jewish way of life bc of a few idiots who hate Israel and the Jews. If we had counter protests, there will be a lot of people who would join
March 20, 2015 2:43 pm at 2:43 pm #1101769writersoulParticipantMy friend will be going to City next year for engineering… She went for a visit and found a sort of pathetic Hillel group with very few frum people apparently on campus but thinks that there’s potential for a really good experience. I’m sure she will be thrilled if there is another frum girl in engineering on campus…
October 7, 2015 6:38 am at 6:38 am #1101770bekitzurParticipantwritersoul, is your friend in Macaulay?
October 8, 2015 12:55 am at 12:55 am #1101771writersoulParticipantWow, this is so random… I only popped in here to ask a question and you replied to my six-months-ago post now :).
Yes, she is. Did you meet her? Please don’t tell her I say hi, I’m technically (if not necessarily practically) incognito here :).
If you’re just asking in general, she did mention that she had some Shabbos problems with the NY tour seminar.
October 8, 2015 1:02 am at 1:02 am #1101772writersoulParticipantWait… where did your post go?
