Why do I have a feeling of deja vu?
September 11, 2016 10:14 pm at 10:14 pm #1179343SparklyMemberlu – smoking is like jumping off the roof its true.
September 11, 2016 11:00 pm at 11:00 pm #1179344HealthParticipantLU -“Because it’s a Mefurash Posek in the Torah. Smoking is not.”
That line sounds like a Tzdoiky!!
I saw this online: “Common consensus among the halachic authorities is to consider electric incandescent light bulbs as fire for the purpose of Shabbat observance. Just as lighting a fire is a Biblical violation of Shabbat, so too is the flipping of a switch which turns on a light.[1]”
So do you turn on lights on Shabbos because it’s not written that’s Osser with a Mefurash Posek in the Torah?!?

September 12, 2016 12:59 pm at 12:59 pm #1179346MenoParticipantCan we please just all agree that smoking is otd and pikuach nefesh, and its ok to watch movies so we can stop bumping this thread?
September 12, 2016 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1179347benignumanParticipantSince when does doing aveiros (alone) make one OTD? A person that does aveiros out of tayvah, like smoking, watching movies, etc. (assuming they are in fact assur), is not off the derech.
September 12, 2016 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #1179348zahavasdadParticipantbenignuman
Dont you know that if you decide to learn Nach instead of Gemorah, you are OTD
September 12, 2016 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #1179349HealthParticipantZD -“Dont you know that if you decide to learn Nach instead of Gemorah, you are OTD”
It depends why you’re not learning Gemorra. If it’s because you don’t believe in Torah Sheh Bal Peh, then you are OTD!
If it’s because you were never taught how to learn Gemorra, then you’re not Otd.
September 12, 2016 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #1179350SparklyMemberHealth – i must be otd since i smoke lol. (just joking) but for real if i did smoke i would consider myself otd.
September 12, 2016 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #1179351Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMeno: “Can we please just all agree that smoking is otd and pikuach nefesh, and its ok to watch movies so we can stop bumping this thread?”
lol.

“benignuman
Dont you know that if you decide to learn Nach instead of Gemorah, you are OTD”
So if I would decide to start learning Nach, would I be OTD?
September 12, 2016 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #1179353Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI consider myself to be OTD. I don’t think I’m completely on the Derech. Maybe on the side at best.
September 12, 2016 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1179354MenoParticipant“but for real if i did smoke i would consider myself otd”
I find that hard to believe. So much so that it even makes me laugh.
September 12, 2016 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #1179355Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI do a lot of things that are much worse than smoking! (so I guess I’m not even on the side).
September 12, 2016 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #1179356benignumanParticipantHealth wrote: “It depends why you’re not learning Gemorra. If it’s because you don’t believe in Torah Sheh Bal Peh, then you are OTD!

There are many other reasons than those two (e.g. you enjoy Nach more, it is easier to get published in Nach, etc.). If it is anything other than the first reason, you are not OTD.
September 12, 2016 10:55 pm at 10:55 pm #1179357zahavasdadParticipantSarcasm is lost on many
September 12, 2016 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm #1179358Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantZD: I was being sarcastic myself, or was that lost on you?
As a girl, I can’t imagine that too many people would consider me OTD if I started learning Nach instead of Gemara!
September 13, 2016 11:28 am at 11:28 am #1179359zahavasdadParticipantI was actually aimed at health.
I was trying to make the point that if someone is frum , does everything according to the torah, but is a little out of the box , Some call them OTD.
The point of saying Nach, was not to say someone only belived in Torah Shbetav, but rather someone who didnt really like gemorah, but wanted to learn something else that they did like and could get more out of.
September 13, 2016 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm #1179360HealthParticipantZD -“The point of saying Nach, was not to say someone only belived in Torah Shbetav, but rather someone who didnt really like gemorah, but wanted to learn something else that they did like and could get more out of.”
Well then, you should have said that in the beginning!
But I think you were out to Shtoch!
September 13, 2016 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #1179361SparklyMemberi dont understand how people consider guys who smoke not otd?
September 13, 2016 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #1179362nishtdayngesheftParticipant“Dont you know that if you decide to learn Nach instead of Gemorah, you are OTD”
I know you thought you were being sharp, however, making light of learning gemara and saying focus specifically on Nach was very much what the Reform movement would say.
And, following in their Footsteps(That’s called dual purposing) Dov Lipman wrote an article saying that Yeshivot should move away from learning gemara and should learn Nach instead. And we know that he affiliated with a party that wanted to move people OTD.
Saying Learn Nach instead of Gemara is NOT a benign statement.
September 13, 2016 4:28 pm at 4:28 pm #1179363☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOh, come on NDG, he’s not saying to change the normal curriculum, he’s suggesting it for those who are not being matzliach in learning Gemara.
September 13, 2016 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #1179364MenoParticipant“i dont understand how people consider guys who smoke not otd?”
Hey, I just discovered there’s a thread about that:

September 13, 2016 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #1179365popa_bar_abbaParticipantcan someone please summarize the last 9 pages
September 13, 2016 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #1179366nishtdayngesheftParticipantDY,
I didn’t say he did. I suspect the ZD had no idea of the meaning of his words.
But had he been aware of the history of such statements, he would realize it was not something that is appropriate for sarcasm.
September 13, 2016 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #1179367☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantcan someone please summarize the last 9 pages
Sparkly: someone who smokes is OTD.
Everyone else: no he isn’t.
Sprinkle in a debate about which is worse, smoking or watching movies.
Time to move on to the Health/Ubiquitin marathon.
September 13, 2016 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #1179368☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantBTW, I can summarize that even more concisely:
Ubiquitin: ?
Health: !
Everyone else: zzzzz
September 13, 2016 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #1179369benignumanParticipant“Saying Learn Nach instead of Gemara is NOT a benign statement”
True. I definitely didn’t make such a statement.
September 13, 2016 5:11 pm at 5:11 pm #1179370zahavasdadParticipantThere is a reason the Rebbe always told you not to ask a Kasher of a Maaser
September 13, 2016 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #1179371WinnieThePoohParticipantIt was worth agonizing thru 9 repetitive pages to get to DY’s last 2 posts- brilliant!
Perfect way to end this thread, no??? Please???
September 13, 2016 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #1179372SparklyMemberWinnieThePooh – why do you want the thread to end? we still havent come to our conclusion.
September 13, 2016 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #1179373nishtdayngesheftParticipant“Kasher of a Maaser”
I’ve never heard this.
And nothing turns up even in a Google search that seems to make sense.
Can you explain this?
September 13, 2016 8:24 pm at 8:24 pm #1179374MenoParticipant“And nothing turns up even in a Google search that seems to make sense”
Google never went to shiur.
September 13, 2016 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #1179375WinnieThePoohParticipantSparkly-“why do you want the thread to end? we still havent come to our conclusion. “
Yes we have, everyone has been saying the same thing over and over. Just maybe no one has convinced anyone else to change their minds.
nisht- “Kasher of a Maaser” -he means “a kashe (question) of a maa’seh (a story)”- i.e. you don’t ask questions on/delve too deeply into a story.
September 13, 2016 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #1179376🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantwtp – he knew that, he just wanted to make sure it was pointed out.
September 13, 2016 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #1179377SparklyMemberWinnieThePooh – everyone is trying to say that boys who smoke are not otd and im trying to say that that is false.
September 13, 2016 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #1179378Person1MemberI think everyone else is just amused.
September 14, 2016 6:51 am at 6:51 am #1179380WinnieThePoohParticipantIt’s not amusing anymore. Yes, Sparkly we know what you are saying, and what everyone else is saying. that’s my point exactly- we’ve been saying the same things for 9 pages already! You are not convincing anyone that boys who smoke are OTD and they are obviously not convincing you that they are not, so why bother continuing this thread?
September 14, 2016 7:34 am at 7:34 am #1179381NechomahParticipantSparkly, perhaps you don’t understand, but the other people on this thread do not agree with you. While I am very against smoking and my sons all know that if they even though about taking a puff they probably would not be able to sit down for a very long time (just joking), there are a lot of boys in EY who smoke. It’s more accepted over here. It would have been a deal breaker for a shidduch for my daughter before she met her husband and I had to quickly call the shadchan to make sure he did not smoke before we would even consider letting them go out (no point in going out with someone that there is no chance to marry), but her friends have brothers who smoke and they are not off the derech. Either you have to come up with some proofs to your side or drop the argument because you haven’t convinced anybody here in the CR.

I think this whole topic is one big misunderstanding!
I don’t think Sparkly understands the Yeshivishe new slange meaning of “OTD”!

September 15, 2016 1:48 am at 1:48 am #1179386zahavasdadParticipantso what is the yeshivish new slang of otd?
If you wear a Blue shirt instead of a white shirt
September 15, 2016 3:01 am at 3:01 am #1179387SparklyMemberzahavasdad – are you referring to on shabbos or during a weekday because i know LOTS of guys who wear different color shirts on shabbos and LOTS of other guys who ONLY wear them during the weekday?
