I was very disturbed recently, when I got haircut by a frum barber shop, (which has different barbers from time to time – from different backrounds) seemingly the barber did not know the simple halachos of peyos. I am not talking about any chumros, regular simple halachos the guy didn’t know. Please owners of barber shops; Teach your barbers the halachos before you hire them, don’t wait for a mistake to happen.
January 17, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #729285Bed-StuyParticipantWhere can I find a barber in the Flatbush area that knows how to let my peyos grow longer?
January 17, 2011 3:21 am at 3:21 am #729286real-briskerMemberbed -stuy – Huh?
January 17, 2011 3:25 am at 3:25 am #729287Bed-StuyParticipantThe barbers seems to cut the peyos area that somehow prevents the peyos from growing longer and thicker than it currently is. What can I tell the barber so that he cuts the hair in a manner that allows the peyos to grow larger and thicker?
January 17, 2011 4:36 am at 4:36 am #729288bezalelParticipantMaybe it’s time to insist that barbers have smicha in hilchos peyos.

nice frum young guy – seems to know halacha
January 17, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #729294apushatayidParticipantBarbers wont cut anything you tell them not to.
January 17, 2011 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #729295real-briskerMemberapy – you shouldnt have to tell them what not to cut, they should be pre trained.
January 17, 2011 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #729296apushatayidParticipantWhat they should or shouldn’t know is irrelevent when anyone sits down in a barbers chair. If you say don’t cut it, they won’t. How many people behind the counter at a take out store are proficient in hilchos kashrus?
January 17, 2011 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #729297Bed-StuyParticipantapy, the guy behind the counter isn’t preparing the food.
January 17, 2011 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #729298apushatayidParticipantSo he didnt prepare it. the hispanic fellow in the back of the store doesnt know much yoreh deah either. Are you suggesting we get a rav hamachshir for all barber shops?
January 18, 2011 12:37 am at 12:37 am #729299real-briskerMemberapy – There is a reason why there are mashgiachs in takeouts.
January 18, 2011 1:59 am at 1:59 am #729300apushatayidParticipantYOU are the mashgiach when you take a haircut. Tell him what to cut, he will. Its that simple. Of course, your free to look for the barber fluent in all the appropriate halachos.
January 18, 2011 2:37 am at 2:37 am #729301metrodriverMemberReal Brisker, APY and working Bubby (who knows a barber that knows Halacha.) Either we should have the Rabbonim come out with a Kol-Koreh (With all the politically-correct signatures.), requiring all the barber shops to hire Mashgichim temidiim, or hiring barbers with Smicha. (who know all the Shitas Harishonim v’Gedolai Ha’Achronim about the Shiur, (Including the Brisker) of Payos. There’s only one possible problem (with hiring barbers who have S’micha). That if someone has a Shaila about pots and pans they will run to the nearest barber shop. But the Rav/haircutter will be busy giving someone a haircut. Eventually, Din-Torahs will be held in Barber Shops. As well as Siddur Kiddushin and Gittin.
January 18, 2011 4:15 am at 4:15 am #729302real-briskerMembermetro – we can make the smicha just on hilchos peyos, doesnt have to be on full yoreh deah.
January 18, 2011 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #729303metrodriverMemberReal-Brisker; It’s like a dentist who works only on one side of the mouth. But then again, with today’s sub-specialties, who knows?! We might end up having one barber specializing in Hilchos Peyos and the other in trimming beards. so, (Hypothetically.) if a customer wants a haircut plus a trim of his beard, we might end up with Two barbers working on one customer. Barber shops might then end up looking like Hospitals with surgical teams operating on patients.
January 18, 2011 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #729304real-briskerMembermetro – I thought you would understand hilchos peyos mean “pias harosh and pias hazuken”.
January 18, 2011 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #729305apushatayidParticipantOr, we could simplify things. Learn the halachos yourself, and use a barber who only cuts what you instruct him to cut.
January 18, 2011 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #729306dunnoMemberMy brothers always tell the barber exactly how they want their peyos BEFORE he starts chopping.
January 18, 2011 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #729307bezalelParticipantThere’s only one possible problem (with hiring barbers who have S’micha). That if someone has a Shaila about pots and pans they will run to the nearest barber shop.
This doesn’t seem to be a problem for Shatnez testers, Shochtim, and Mohelim. Why do you think barbers will be any different?
