I wanted to pick up on a recent thread on a kosher gym in Flatbush. In general, fitness does not seem to be a popular activity among the frum, and given all the health benefits to exercising, it is puzzling why it is not. I can understand people have other priorities, whether it’s work, family and learning, but do people not engage in it because they feel it is not a frum thing to do, or is it just laziness. It is a shame that a place like the kosher gym did not succeed, but given the size of the local population, there should be enough interest to sustain a frum-only health club.

December 15, 2014 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #1050449mir talmidMemberThis is the Machlokes between Yovon and the Yidden, The reason we eat Fattening oily foods on Chanukah is so we should become fat and out of shape because the Greeks idolized the Human body and we want to do the opposite
December 15, 2014 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #1050450TheGoqParticipantLaziness, complacency, many men once they get married feel they no longer have to worry about their waistline, its not that they are slobs most clean up pretty well when need be and overall their appearance is decent but the need to be fit and trim is no longer a high priority for some.

December 15, 2014 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #1050452SayIDidIt™Participant“Rebbe used to teach us Torah each and every day, we opened up our eyes and ears to everything he’d say. And thanks to him we’re learning – virtuous and wise – but one thing is for certain, we don’t get much exercise!”
December 15, 2014 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm #1050453👑RebYidd23ParticipantThe Greeks also had a suicide rate of less than 75% and did not throw stones whenever they heard the word “cat”.

December 16, 2014 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #1050455VogueMemberI think people should try at least taking a 10 minute walk in the morning before starting their day. It could be walking to the daf yomi shiur/ minyan, or walking to the second closest subway/bus stop, or even school.
December 17, 2014 2:57 am at 2:57 am #1050456yytzParticipantI think a pretty large number of frum people are into exercising. We should be even more so, since lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle (and obesity) is unhealthy, lowers your mood, causes disease, takes years off your life, and is a general chillul Hashem.
Even so, it’s not necessary to use a gym, as there are tons of good fitness videos online, which can use for free.
Just doing a few pushups and situps or burpees or whatever, taking 10 minutes out of your day, can make a big difference in your mood and fitness level. It takes a bit of effort the first time you do it, but once you’re used to it it’s not hard at all.
Aerobics exercise, whether from jogging or aerobic workout videos, is also very important (studies show it stimulates the brain even better than caffeine).
December 17, 2014 4:32 am at 4:32 am #1050457JosephParticipantIt seems it is mostly girls, by far, that are into gym, exercise, etc. in the frum community. Mainly for shidduchim and then for their husband.

December 17, 2014 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1050460oomisParticipantIf that kosher gym were more affordable to most people, perhaps they would go. But to be perfectly candid, if one is a Yeshivish, Kollel couple, perhaps the money that the wife is working so hard to earn, or the money that the Shver is generously giving them (so that his eidem can sit and learn and not worry about parnassah), could be put to more practical use than working out in a gym. There is PLENTY of exercise to be had without going to a gym.
Frankly, I think it would be better for the marriage, if the couple would take daily long walks together or even have their own workout routine that they do as a couple in their own home. It would give them both exercise AND together time. There are plenty of books about how to exercise properly. Much cheaper than a gym, for people who cannot afford a membership.
And yes, as we take note especially this week, the Greeks were way too into the perfection of the human body. It behooves us to remember that the first Gyms were from Yovon, and as Jews we focus beyond the physical. They focuses SOLELY on the physical.
December 17, 2014 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1050461yaakov doeParticipantMir talmid – a simply brilliant comment that clarified, at least for me,the reasons for one of our minhagim.
December 17, 2014 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #1050462yehudajMemberOP: this is a generational issue not limited to frum people. There are a million and one excuses not to exercise, one could even argue it is harder on young – frum – couples, with all the little kiddies running around, diets are also an issue, shabbos – b”h many simchas – makes it more challenging – harder access gyms, which may be a good thing. Gyms are hard pressed to make money, it is a very hard business model. Ask any gym, their cash cow is the member who signs up and is forced into 3 years but shows up twice and is stuck in a contract (30 a month, a gym would need 1500 – 2000 members to be able to pay rent in the heart of flatbush plus staff but the facility can’t handle that many people)- I would hope frum people are smart enough to avoid such contracts so yeah its a tough sell and a tough business so no surprises that it failed.
I would love to see a kosher version of P90X or the like anyone wanna film it with me? (i’ve done it im a fan)
December 17, 2014 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #1050463flatbusherParticipantThere is a difference between focusing on the physical and exercising for good health. I think that may be a reason why more frum people don’t exercise–they think it is something goyish. But so is gluttony, and even if a person didn’t exercise but ate properly, they probably would not be obese. I was thinking of maybe getting enough people to put up a sum of money as users/investors to construct a private gym. Any takers?
December 26, 2014 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm #1050464flatbusherParticipantI am disappointed, but I guess not surprised, that no one here seems interested in investing in an exclusive gym just for frum men.
December 28, 2014 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #1050465VogueMembergo back to your yeshiva- they should have one.

Many do.
December 30, 2014 12:01 pm at 12:01 pm #1050467flatbusherParticipantyeshiva gyms typically are big rooms where they play basketball. Have you seen otherwise?
December 30, 2014 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #1050468NeutiquamErroParticipantYep. I know plenty of Yeshivos with access to gyms at specified times, as well as sports centres, pitches and swimming.
December 30, 2014 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1050469flatbusherParticipantGlad to hear, hope the bochurim use it but what about the adults?
December 30, 2014 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #1050470NeutiquamErroParticipantNah, they’re stuck
