    PBA,

If you work such long hours, how do you have time to post in the coffee room?

I would take it a step further and say that not all jobs are the same, and not all businesses are the same. Some jobs, even with crazy hours, may have more flexibility than others, and some business owners may need to be available to their clients/customers to be successful.

The point is that a person should not think that the world is limited to his/her experiences.

Because I’m dependent on other people. I can’t do the work until it’s given to me. So I frequently have time during the day, even if I the work until midnight.

He has his secretary post for him. (Disregard popa’s answer. In this thread we’re allowed to assume we know more about other people’s lives than they do.)

DY, I was not making that assumption. I was merely trying to point out that making early shabbos is sometimes a necessity (such as Gateshead) and somehow this whole thread turned into why some people live in the real world and others apparently don’t.

Popa, my father works IN business, and on Fridays he works at home because otherwise he wouldn’t get to leave the office until five minutes before shabbos – is that an option for you? I’m really trying to be open-minded and I really am NOT clueless (the opposite, actually) but for some reason people don’t get that.

DY – your comment “The point is that a person should not think that the world is limited to his/her experiences” is exactly what I was trying to make when asking Popa to stop welcoming me to the real world.

He works with the right side of his brain and posts with the left.

yes, but that isn’t early shabbos.

Notasheep, the reason I’m not getting your being open-minded is because you keep questioning how popa can’t make early Shabbos. You want to know something? I don’t either. My life experiences are vastly different. I b”H do have the luxury of early Shabbos if I want (I usually opt not to, out of halachic considerations, but I don’t live in Gateshead, so I’m not judging you, or for that matter, anyone anywhere), but I can accept that popa (or anyone) can have such a reality, even if it’s out of my realm of experience.

For those curious, I have a conference call scheduled for 8 PM tonight.

I’m going to beg off, since I hope to be on the way to mincha then. But no, I wouldn’t be able to beg off it was at 7.

Popa, my father does make early shabbos as well, actually.

DY, I realise you’re trying to mediate here, but actually I wasn’t questioning how popa can’t make early shabbos; this whole tangent started because popa was expressing his annoyance at being invited out to families who make early shabbos (and early shabbos in general), and I was trying to explain why some people do make early shabbos.

I understand popa’s complaint, “Worst is when you get invited somewhere and then the people decide they are making early shabbos” to be against those who only tell him that they’re making early Shabbos after he’s already accepted the invitation.

He did kind of muddle the issue with his ill-conceived hashkafic tayna on early Shabbos, but I would hope and expect that he doesn’t really have a problem with someone making early Shabbos, as long as it’s not at his expense.

So let’s try an experiment: Popa, I plan on making early Shabbos next week. Any issues?

I don’t have any issue with people making early shabbos.

I started off being annoyed at getting meal invitations by people who make early shabbos. Not that they’re doing something wrong–just that it is annoying to me.

Then I branched out into noting that early shabbos is a luxury. And then I was attacked by notasheep for having the audacity to not have the same job that his father has, and for not being willing to lose my job for the sake of keeping early shabbos.

    That’s all.

    Well then, you’re not invited.

I wasn’t attacking you. Also it should be pretty clear from my posting history that I am female. Unless that was a typo…

Dy it’s a long way from anchorage to gateshead.

Notasheep, I may or may not know you, but as you may have gathered from my screenname, I do come from your part of the world.

I am not suggesting you bring in Shabbos at shkia, but even in Gateshead the early (1st plag) minyonim, (Mechina, Beis hatalmud, zichron shaul, etc.) are a relatively recent development. In fact, going back 40 years or so, there is a cute story when they started the first ‘plag’ minyan in Gateshead Shul.

It was during Rav Shakovitsky’s time, and a few young people made a minyan at plag on Friday. As they came out of shul, they met the Rov zt”l coming down Bewick Road, to the main minyan, and as I was told it was almost 10pm. Someone said “Gut Shabbos, Rov”, to which he replied, “Gut Friday, Mr so-and-so!”

75 year old popa: Now that you’ve got the math worked out, are you making early Shabbos?
