Folding Taleisim on Shabbos

I remember my father (and everyone else in the Agudah of Fourteenth Avenue, including Rabbi Elberg zt”l, Rabbi Karp zt”l, Rabbi Perkowski zt”l, and myriad other choshuvah people)folding his talis ON THE CREASES after davening Shabbos morning. There are many other examples I could bring of things that were done back then (primarily the 1960’s)that are no longer done, or vice versa, but I’m particularly curious about the genesis of this change. When did this happen? How did it happen? Was a p’sak suddenly issued by someone? If so, by whom? If not, was there a sudden mass epiphany that generations of shul yidden had been doing it wrong all along?
